The floating (流动的) homes of Lake Titicaca
More than 500 years ago, the growing Inca Empire began to occupy the Uros’ mainland villages. To resist this threat, the Uros began to build the floating islands with the water-resistant plant called totora, which grows in the lake and is the lifeblood of the Uros community.
The perfect desert town: Ghadames
Ghadames is an impressive example of environmental planning. Thick walls delay the sun’s heat entering a building during the day, and radiate that heat back to the sky at night. By morning, the walls have cooled again. Skilful use of available building materials achieves the maximum comfort with minimal means.
Spain’s fairy-tale houses
Known as pallozas, the round houses are built from just a handful of materials: stone, wood and dry grass. Thick stone walls depending on what was available in the area block the cold and conserve internal heat. Inside, the palloza’s fireplaces are essential for maintaining a constant temperature, making it energy-efficient.
The Himalayas’ ancient design
The structures in Himachal Pradesh were built by an ancient technique known as Kath kuni. Wood and stones create a fantastic balance. The wooden frames (框架) lessen the stress on the openings during an earthquake. Thick stones hold the whole building firmly in place. Above all, pieces of wood interlock together, which makes the structures remarkably flexible, allowing walls to move in case of an earthquake.

Every morning at 5 a.m. when most people are asleep, a single figure would be busy in the kitchen, cooking meals for the needy folks of Singapore until the rest of the volunteers and the four full-time cooks arrive. Day in and day out, Mr Tony Tay and his team prepare, cook, pack and deliver the food to various parts of the island. This team of caring volunteers from all walks of life work tirelessly to bring a smile to the less privileged, bringing warmth and kindness into their lives!
During one of his visits to collect vegetables and distribute them to a less privileged neighborhood, his wife noticed that the elderly folk did not take vegetables. Upon asking for the reason, one replied that she could not cook and thus only ate the rice delivered to her. Mrs Tay then offered to cook for her, and that single meal initiated Willing Hearts, which has since served nearly 650,000 meals and counting.
Since the organization’s early days, volunteers have learned how to cook, interact with people from all walks of life, pick up different languages, acquire greater knowledge about social issues, and most importantly, build strong bonds with one another. Through Willing Hearts, Mr Tay hopes to expose the younger generation to the country’s backyard, to allow them to see and experience firsthand what goes on behind closed doors. This is to encourage them to become more compassionate individuals who understand the importance of taking care of the elderly, and be inspired to facilitate unity within their own families. His best gift during the course of this journey is seeing how younger volunteers help and feed the less privileged. One volunteer, he proudly tells us, has been inspired to start his own programme to help the needy.
As a non-profit organization, Willing Hearts relies heavily on donations and food collections. Although the volunteers at Willing Hearts may be a small and irregular group, they are always on the lookout for the poor to extend their assistance to them.

It is reported that rail industry employers are planning to phase out paper train tickets and shut almost 1,000 station ticket offices in England. The authorities say nothing has been decided. But the transport secretary, Grant Shapps, points out some stations sell only a handful of tickets each week and the vast majority of deals have moved online.
Regardless of the outcome of the plan, the direction of travel is clear. In the name of modernization and expense-cutting, station ticket offices are likely to follow countless high street bank branches and rural post offices into memory. For those who have grown used to the advantages of organizing travel by smartphone, there will be little to feel sorry. But for people without online access or skills, another small social barrier will emerge. A recent report estimated that around 6% of households — 1.5m homes — have no Internet access. Millions more of us remain irregular and unconfident users of the Internet. Most likely, as digital technology becomes the gatekeeper to everyday life, a significant minority risks being left behind.
Shifting online is unavoidable, but its fallout needs to be managed with more care. Technology should not be allowed to drive people to the side of their own lives, as anecdotal (传闻的) evidence suggests is increasingly the case. Ros Altmann, the former pensions (养老金) minister, recently wrote of being contacted by an elderly woman who no longer drives to her local park, because she cannot download the car parking app required.
The debate over ticket offices offers an opportunity to reflect more broadly on the increasing role of technology in our social landscape. Clearly, much more needs to be invested in helping marginalized (边缘化的) groups acquire easy online access. Alternative offline options must be maintained for important services. Contactable telephone numbers and staffed public access points should always be available. This will need more expense. But that is the price of being fair to those who find themselves on the wrong side of the digital divide.
