The world’s 4 largest sea protected areas
Coral Sea
The Coral Sea is off the northeast coast of Australia and it includes the Great Barrier Reef. Every year, huge
humpback whales travel through the sea protected area from Antarctica and six of the world’s seven species of sea
turtle can be found within its waters. Set up in 2021 to protect sea life, the MPA is divided into four different areas,
the most part of which don’t permit dragging a net in fishing and other industrial fishing methods.
South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands
The sea protected areas in the Southern Ocean cover an area five times larger than the UK and were set up by
the British government in 2012 and enlarged in 2013 and 2019. Its no-fishing areas, where all fishing activity is not
allowed, cover 283, 000 sq km. And they include the richest areas of seafloor life, including all coastal waters
around South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands at depths below 100metres.
Pitcairn Islands
Set up in 2016, the MPA covers the whole of the islands’ Exclusive Economic Zone in one of the most remote

people. The sea protected areas are to protect some of the world’s most original ocean habitats from fishing

The Kerguelen Islands
The Kerguelen Islands in the southern Indian Ocean are also known as the Lonely Islands. France keeps a
group of 45 to 100 soldiers and scientists living and doing research on the small islands which have no original
population. France announced the waters around the Kerguelen Islands in the southern Indian Ocean as sea
protected areas in 2006.

Pongen could see until he was 14 years old. He has been blind for the 13 years since. But, nobody would know
that by watching Pongen perform on the piano.
Pongen said playing the piano helped him after he lost his sight. “It opened a window to see the world. It gives
me energy and hope to go forward,” he said.
Recently, he performed at the Brillante Piano Festival in Bengaluru, the capital of the southern Indian state of
Karnataka.
Pongen plays by ear. He taught himself to play, supported by piano play training on YouTube that he began
using in 2020. He said he would like to be a professional musician someday. But he is having difficulty finding a
place that teaches piano to people with sight problems.
Pongen first noticed his vision problems at school. He could not see clearly enough to read words on the
blackboard in the room. Then he remembers having difficulty seeing the small, glass balls called marbles (弹球)
that he liked to play with. A medical operation to treat the problem failed, worsening his vision. By 14, Pongen was

blind.
Pongen says that he sometimes wishes he could see but adds that he also accepts his condition. He believes
he is meant to serve as a model in how to face difficulty, lending support to others through example.
Pongen came more than 3,000 kilometers to Bengaluru. He traveled with his sister, Imlibenla, by his side to
play at Brillante Festival, the fifth of its kind. His heart was racing, he said, when the program director, Khyochano
TCK, presented him to the other musicians.
The nervousness returned as his performance time arrived. Pongen said he took a deep breath to calm himself.
Then, Imlibenla gently steered him onto the stage. She helped to seat him in front of the piano. From there, he
played beautifully.

At one time, the American Chestnut (栗子) was among the most common and largest trees in the eastern
United States. The wood was used to cover the walls of homes and schools. The leaves helped add nutrients to the
soil. And men on street corners sold chestnuts cooked on open fire.
However, in the late 19th century, some East Asian varieties of chestnut trees brought to the U. S. carried a
fungus (真菌) that killed almost all American chestnuts.
The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) is a non-profit organization based in the eastern state of North
Carolina. It has been working with researchers for over 30 years to bring the trees back to eastern U. S. forests.
American chestnuts now exist mostly as huge root systems that grow into small trees. The fungus harms them
when the small trees start to develop fully. East Asian varieties, like those that brought the fungus in the first place,

are resistant to the fungus.
Researchers have tried to save American chestnuts by cross-breeding them with one kind of Chinese chestnut
that can fight off the fungus. Progress has been slow, however. The trees the researchers have grown could not
resist the fungus well enough to become large and healthy trees.
That is why scientists are now trying to combine two methods: cross-breeding and genetically changing the
genes of American chestnut trees. They hope this will improve the tree’s ability to resist attack from the fungus.
A changing climate and warmer temperatures may also make restoring the chestnut difficult in some areas. A
team at Virginia Tech University published a study this summer about this issue. They looked at projected future
climates and then measured the shortest distance the trees would have to move to survive well in a new climate.
For now, researchers know their work might not be successful in their lifetimes. The process has been slow.

Recently, a rare pudu was born in an Argentinian zoo. The birth has given scientists and conservationists a
chance to study and collect data on the small deer. And this offers hope of saving them from extinction.
Pudus are one of the smallest deer species in the world. They can grow up to 50 centimeters tall and weigh up
to 12 kilograms. At birth, the white-spotted male pudu weighed just 1.21 kilograms.
Workers at the conservation organization Temaiken Foundation named it Lenga after a tree species in the
Andean Patagonian Forest of Chile and Argentina.
“It’s a very mysterious animal. It’s not easy to see,” said Maximiliano Krause. He is Lenga’s caretaker at the

nonprofit organization. Krause says Lenga is spending his days exploring the park with his mother, Chalten, and
father, Nicolino. Lenga is feeding on milk of its mother for the first two months until he can eat plants on his own.
After that, Lenga will lose his white spots and the spotty skin color that helps small deer hide from both
daytime and nighttime predators (捕食者). At about one year, pudus develop horns and reach up to10 centimeters
long.
Pudus are very elusive animals. In other words, they are hard to find and difficult to see in the wild. When
chased by predators, they escape in a zig-zag manner. The small deer also face threats from wild dogs and species
introduced into southern Argentina and Chile.
Only about 10, 000 pudus remain in the wild. They are listed as near-threatening by the International Union
for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) .
“This pudu birth is obviously a joy for us,” said Cristian Guillet. He is the director of zoological operations at
the Temaiken Foundation. Guillet said that Lenga will help them research and gather data that will help
conservation efforts for pudus and other Patagonian deer, like the huemul.
