Two years ago, as my then-9-year-old son, George, and I were preparing for a mom-son ski trip to Keystone, Colorado, I came up with a rule: We would say yes to everything that comes our way.
George is a picky (挑剔的) eater and can be unwilling to try new things. According to him, it’s because he has fears, including heights, spiders and the dark. I was hoping to find a solution. So I borrowed the idea of a Yes Day, inspired by a movie I watched. Before the trip, George and I agreed we would say yes to everything, especially new ones.
Settled at our hotel, I took George to meet his snowboarding teacher. Though he had basic lessons in Connecticut, this was his first time on a larger mountain. While he learned, I skied by myself, choosing an easy green run on the first day. Inspired by George’s bravery on the chairlift (升降机), I challenged myself to ski a more demanding blue run the next day. It was steep (陡峭的), but with careful turns, I made it down in one piece, feeling proud of conquering (征服) a new challenge.
Later that afternoon, when George and I were reunited, he asked if we could go in the outdoor hot tub (浴池). Mind you, it was a 20-degree day, and the only thing I hate more than being cold is being cold and wet! When I started to refuse, George reminded me of the rule. Yes, it was cold, and yes, I was wet. But it was also good to feel the cold air on my skin, and the warm water of the hot tub felt that much better once we got in. Getting out was a different story, but the experience was happy as George and I braved (勇敢面对) it together.
Developing a sense of adventure helps us live life to the fullest — even if you sometimes wind up cold and wet.
32. Why did the writer start a “Yes Day” rule
A. To conquer George’s ski fears. B. To master new snowboarding skills.
C. To encourage George to try new things. D. To win in snowboarding competitions.
33. Which of the following best describes George
A. Confident. B. Courageous. C. Positive. D. Responsible.
34. What can we learn about the writer from paragraph 4&5
A. She was eager to go in the outdoor hot tub.
B. She regretted breaking the rule with George.
C. She felt much better when she got out of the tub.
D. She found it rewarding (值得做的) to brave the experience.
35. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Welcoming Yes: A Family Adventure B. Family Ski Trip: Mountain Memories
C. Ski Challenges: Winter Wonders D. Braving Winter: Family Unity

Without hesitation, Simon took action. He quickly soaked the blanket in the pool and wrapped it around his body to resist smoke and fire. Covering his mouth and nose tightly, he rushed straight into the burning house. Thick black smoke filled every corner, making it hard to see clearly. He shouted James’s name loudly while feeling his way through the hot rooms. Finally, he spotted the little boy crying alone in the bedroom. He held James firmly and headed for the door at once.
Simon rushed out of the burning house with James in his arms. Mary ran forward immediately and held her younger son tightly, bursting into tears of relief. She thanked Simon over and over again for risking his life to save her kid. Soon the firemen arrived and put out the fire completely. Later, Mary visited Simon many times with homemade food to express her gratitude. This unforgettable experience taught Mary that kindness and bravery can bring light when people are trapped in trouble.
