I’m a single dad raising a son, so I usually helped my child select my Father’s day gifts, and then paid for them. When my son was a high school senior, he took control of the gifting by offering to drive us to Denny’s for breakfast. But the evening before the holiday, I couldn’t sleep. After years of supporting, guiding, and loving my son, I finally recognized that taking part in my son’s life on any level was not a duty— it was an honor.

At a salmon farm in Tasmania, Australia, researchers hope an experiment can save an entire ecosystem from warming oceans. Beneath the waves, scientists are growing several types of giant kelp (巨藻) on rope to track which ones can thrive in hotter conditions. Rising water temperatures have destroyed some 95% of the giant kelp forests here, scientists say. The island south of Australia’s mainland is a global hot spot for ocean warming, with sea temperatures in the island’s east rising faster than the global average, bringing great destruction to some marine species in a place where fishing remains a key industry.
Now, financial (财政的) support is increasing to save Tasmania’s giant kelp, which can grow treelike covers near the ocean surface, provides an important habitat for many traded species and can sequester carbon dioxide (CO ), much like forests on land. The effort is part of a global race to make marine ecosystems more adaptable to climate change.
In Tasmania, scientists are conducting experiments to identify heat-tolerant (耐热的) giant kelp, trying to better understand why some types do better than others, and then figure out a way to plant them in the wild without it costing a fortune. Eventually, they could use what they learned about kelp’s DNA to make the seaweed even more heat-tolerant.
But before getting too optimistic, it is important to remain realistic about the challenges. Running lab tests on kelp can be tricky, given the great size the plants can reach. Marine heat waves could increase beyond the ability of any kelp to cope. Besides, scientists still aren’t sure to what extent kelp’s DNA has a role in allowing giant kelp to survive in warmer water, compared with favorable environmental conditions.
Many locals expressed concern over the giant kelp’s disappearance. “It was like a mat (垫子) on the water,” Anthony Klye, a 57-year-old local fisherman, said, recalling the extent of giant kelp that used to grow. “You could almost walk on it.” But after spending three hours one day recently in the bay, he didn’t see a single strand (缕) of kelp.

Measuring about 400 feet(121.9 metres) in length, the world’s largest airship Pathfinder 1 is nearly twice the length of a Boeing 747-8, the world’s longest aircraft. The airship uses about one million cubic feet of helium (氦) and 12 electric motors to achieve upright take-off and speeds of up to 120 km/h. The vast airship has been created by Lighter Than Air (LTA) Research.
Pathfinder 1 is the largest aircraft produced since the 804-foot (245-metre) Hindenburg went up in flames in 1937. While the Hindenburg was filled with extremely flammable hydrogen (易燃氢气), Pathfinder 1 uses safe, non-reactive helium stored in 13 airbags. With technology adapted from drones (无人机), Pathfinder I will also be surprisingly easy to fly and will only need one pilot. While Pathfinder 1 may one day carry tonnes of goods over hundreds of miles, it is currently limited to remaining in the air a few feet off the ground.
Since September, Pathfinder1 has been undertaking the first stages of flight testing around the San Francisco Bay. On September 8,2023, it took its first test flight, but it stayed just off the ground the entire time. Future tests will allow it to go up to 1,500 feet and travel out over the waters of the bay.
Pathfinder 1 has been in development since 2016, and LTA Research says it is currently working to develop an even larger aircraft called Pathfinder 3. The company’s goal is to have different airships that could be used in transporting goods or passengers, or in delivering emergency humanitarian aid.
Pathfinder 1’s creators say that airships will not solve the current problems of air travel but do argue that they have an important role to play in reducing the carbon footprint of air travel.
LTA is also not the only company investing (投资) in airships as the future of air travel. In September 2023, the French company Euro Airship announced plans to create a 495ft-long solar-powered aircraft. The Solar Airship One would use solar energy and hydrogen to travel over more than 25 countries without stopping.
