They lend books out and offer a free, warm and safe place for people to go. Some libraries even send books to people’s homes to make borrowing easier.
Libraries don’t just have books. They also provide other things like computers. They make people feel part of a community. But in the UK, many libraries might close because they can’t pay for running costs.
Many libraries will fine people when they don’t return books on time. In the UK, many people think fines are necessary. They say fines help libraries get better and stop people from giving back books late. Without fines, people might not return books on time. After all, some books are really popular, and others have to wait to read them. Libraries can work well only if people return books on time for others to use.
However, now one-third of the UK’s libraries don’t ask for fines. That means if some people don’t return books on time, they won’t be asked to pay. Also, people with little money borrow books from libraries to save money. So, many libraries have cut down fines to be friendlier.

During the holiday, many people want to find dazi (搭子) or activity partners for traveling, eating or other activities. The activity of finding dazi is a new way of social contact (社会交往) for young people.

Dear Jane,
I just wanted to thank you for volunteering your time at the orphanage (孤儿院). Your warmth and kindness have made a difference in our lives, bringing love, care and a better living environment to the children here. You cared for the children day and night and spent hours playing with them, helping them with their homework, and even planning fun activities to bring so much happiness to their lives.
The children in the orphanage often felt that they were not good enough. They were very lonely because they had no friends before. Because of you, the children felt more loved. They smiled more often. They began to talk with others and helped each other. Our work in providing a better environment for these children could not happen without the help of volunteers like you.
We are really thankful to have you as part of our team looking after the children at the orphanage. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about volunteer activities with the orphanage, please write to us. We are happy that you will join us again for the coming activities. 十一、书面表达参考范文
Dear Tom,
How is everything going
During the May Day holiday, our school held a volunteer activity called “Making a Beautiful Community”, and I took part in it.
We divided into several groups. Some students cleaned the rubbish on the streets and picked up fallen leaves. Others put up warm public signs to remind people to protect the environment. I helped water the flowers in the community garden and talked with the elderly there.
This activity taught me a lot. Small efforts can make our living place much nicer. I hope more students will join in such volunteer activities later.
Yours,
Li Hua
