Sanfu, also known as the Dog Days of the Chinese calendar, refer to the hottest and most humid period of summer in the traditional Chinese lunar calendar. The word Fu means hiding or lying low, suggesting that people should stay indoors and avoid the scorching heat. Sanfu typically falls between mid-July and mid-August, lasting 30 to 40 days.
三伏天是中国传统农历中夏季最热、最潮湿的时期。伏意为隐藏、蛰伏，暗示人们应待在室内、躲避酷暑。三伏通常出现在7月中旬至8月中旬，持续30至40天。

In northern China, there is a well-known folk saying: Eat dumplings in the Initial Fu, noodles in the Middle Fu, and pancakes with eggs in the Final Fu. Dumplings are believed to whet the appetite and replenish energy during the sweltering days when people often suffer from summer lethargy and loss of appetite.
中国北方有著名民谚：头伏饺子二伏面，三伏煎饼摊鸡蛋。人们认为饺子能开胃增食，在三伏天人们常常因暑热而倦怠、食欲不振时补充精力。
Cooling beverages such as sour plum drink (酸梅汤), mung bean porridge (绿豆粥), and lotus seed soup (莲子汤) are consumed throughout Sanfu. These traditional drinks are believed to clear internal heat, quench thirst, and replenish minerals lost through sweating.
酸梅汤、绿豆粥和莲子汤等清凉饮品在整个三伏期间广为饮用。这些传统饮品被认为可以清热解渴、补充因出汗而流失的矿物质。

During Sanfu, families take advantage of the blazing sun to air out clothes, quilts, and books. This practice, called drying in Fu (晒伏), helps remove moisture and prevent mildew during the humid summer months. Ancient scholars also sun-dried their books to protect them from insects and dampness, a tradition known as drying books (晒书).
三伏期间，家家户户利用烈日晾晒衣物、被褥和书籍。这一习俗称为晒伏，有助于在潮湿的夏季去除湿气、防止发霉。古代学者还会晒书以保护书籍免受虫蛀和潮湿，这一传统称为晒书。
