Ronda Rousey is an American mixed martial artist, actress, and former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) champion. She became famous as the first Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s bantamweight(雏量级) champion and helped bring women’s fighting into the mainstream.
Rousey was born on February 1, 1987, in Riverside, California. Her childhood was challenging. She had a speech disorder and did not speak until she was six years old. When she was eight, her father took his own life after a serious injury left him unable to walk. Learning has never just been about utility(实用性). It has always been about meaning. While many architects turn to nature for inspiration, few have designed a building that so closely copies the form and function of a living creature. The proposed 595 West Georgia Street in downtown Vancouver, Canada, draws inspiration from sea sponges(海绵)—specifically the Venus’ flower basket, a species found mainly in the nearby Pacific Ocean. The design team even includes an image of this sponge in their press materials to highlight the connection. The result is a striking building that may one day become Vancouver’s tallest.
Designed by Henriquez Partners Architects, 595 West Georgia Street is part of the larger Georgia & Abbott development, brought forward by the Holborn Group. Of the four buildings in the project, this one is the centerpiece. At a proposed height of 1,033 feet, it would far exceed Vancouver’s current skyline. For comparison, the popular Vancouver Lookout at Harbour Centre stands only 482 feet tall—less than half this building’s planned height.
The influence of the sea sponge appears in the form of a diagrid exoskeleton(斜交网格外骨架). This outer shell provides much of the building’s structural support, which is especially important in an area susceptible to earthquakes. It also allows for large, column-free indoor spaces while using less material. This design was developed with Arup, an international engineering leader, and draws from research at Harvard on the sponge’s efficient skeletal structure.
At the top of 595 West Georgia Street, which will house a hotel, the architects have planned a public observation deck(平台). Designed by PFS Studio, it is described as a “forest in the sky,” offering breathtaking views of the city and the surrounding mountains and ocean. At ground level, a 17,000-square-foot public plaza will connect it to the three other buildings, featuring shops, restaurants, a cultural center, and native art. The neighboring buildings also reflect the sponge theme with sculptural balconies and screens inspired by the sponge’s delicate form. In total, the development would create more than 1,900 homes, a 920-room hotel, conference space, and thousands of jobs.
The proposal has been submitted to the city of Vancouver. Whether this marine-inspired daydream becomes reality remains to be seen, but it already proves that nature is truly one of the greatest architects of all.
