Everyone faces difficulties in life and needs help from time to time. Helping each other is an important part of the human connection.
Human beings are born kind-hearted. This allows us to know and care about other people’s feelings. Whenever we notice people facing trouble, our kindness drives us to offer help. Most people depend too much on their eyes to enjoy nature outside, and this makes us slowly lose the skill to listen to the world around us.
Peter works as a music writer. He is interested in all kinds of sounds and always mixes natural sounds into his music. In the past, he would go into the wild with a microphone (麦克风) and record interesting sounds to use in films or his songs. Instead of focusing only on the sound of an animal or bird, he recorded all sounds at once—wild animals, different trees, blowing wind and the quiet ground. He calls these records “soundscapes”, meaning the full collection of sounds belonging to a single place. Every soundscape Peter made was full of information.
Back in his workshop, Peter would use a computer to create a picture of all the sounds in a place. Every animal, bird and insect had its own place on that picture—its own part in the music. The more crowded the picture was, the more life there was in that place. “While a picture may tell a thousand words, a soundscape tells a thousand pictures,” Peter said. “Our ears can hear every leaf and animal, and they connect us to the natural sources (来源) of our lives, which may hold the secrets of love for all things, especially ourselves as humans.”
But not everything is going well. When Peter started recording over forty years ago, he could get one hour of material (材料) good enough for a movie after ten hours of recording. Now, because of human activities, it may take 1,000 hours or more to get the same result. Some of the places he has recorded over the years have slowly gone silent. His sound pictures show that even if nature looks the same to us, it has lost part of its orchestra (管弦乐队).
So next time you walk in the forest, try a different way to see—close your eyes, and listen.
12. Why did Peter often go into nature with his microphone
A.To collect sounds for his music and movies.
B.To study how different birds sing together.
C.To find quiet places far away from the city.
D.To make movies about different wild animals.
13. What is a sound picture in the text
A.The sound of every leaf and animal in nature.
B.The sound recorded in the natural environment.
C.A picture of music with sounds of 1,000 animals.
D.A picture of music with natural sounds in a place.
14. What can we learn from paragraph 4
A.Recording sounds needs less material.
B.Sound pictures are the same as before.
C.Many natural sounds have disappeared.
D.Human activities improve recording results.
15. What does the writer mainly want to tell us
A.Nature has wonders to be heard.
B.Nature is the source of our future.
C.Making music needs information.
D.Making music makes our lives richer.
