Behavior & Safety
Students must stay with guardians to be safe at all times, follow posted rules strictly, and avoid touching restricted equipment. Food, drinks, and large bags are prohibited in exhibits to prevent accidents or damage. Guardians must provide emergency contacts with updated medical details for all participants.

Fifteen years ago, Erin Merryn met Bailey, a kitten who needed a home when she was a college student. He jumped into her arms and refused to let her go. “I was attached immediately and decided that I would take a risk and try hiding the kitten in my college dorm where pets are obviously not allowed,” Erin recalled. A week later she was caught and given 48 hours to remove the cat. After several phone calls, Erin managed to convince her parents to let her keep him.
Six years ago, Erin had Abby, her beautiful daughter. She didn’t know what Bailey would think about the new addition when she brought her home from the hospital. “But it was love at first sight.” Erin said. Bailey stayed by Abby’s side, guarding and showering her with love and purrs. As Abby grew, he became her protective brother, watching over her every step of the way. Abby picked up a book one day and tried to read it with Bailey by her side. He became her perfect audience, and the sweet boy was completely attracted by Abby as she told him stories of wonder.
A video showing Abby reading to Bailey went viral online in 2018. Numerous people followed Erin on social media platforms.
Unfortunately, on December 8, 2018, just months after becoming famous, the 14-year-old cat passed away from kidney failure. A full month after Bailey’s passing, Erin still got cards and gifts from caring individuals. It is this love that Erin hopes Bailey’s fans hold on to. Sometimes a book comes along that isn’t just “interesting” or “well done”— it’s a book where it seems like the author looked into your brain and wrote a book specifically for you. A book like that for me was released this week. It’s called 100 Things We’ve Lost to the Internet, written by editor Pamela Paul.
Paul lists 100 things we used to do that the Internet has either changed or taken over completely: writing letters, print newspapers, the joys of being bored, and not having all the knowledge in the world in your pocket.
As I’m a longtime accumulator of random knowledge, certain entries on the list—Being the Only One, Figuring Out Who That Actor is—hit me where live; remembering detailed facts is no longer nearly as impressive when everyone has the capability to find the answer in seconds.
On and on the list goes, with every minor shift adding to the pile. What this book does so well is illustrate the growth of that pile; while any individual item might be no big deal, the collected set is significant. It’s a list of ways in which the world now is different from the world then.
Obviously, Paul isn’t saying that everything back then was better. Time marches on, after all. and it’s tough to argue against the many benefits that the Internet has brought into our lives. But that isn’t really the point. It’s not about whether it used to be better. It’s that it used to be different.
100 Things We’ve Lost to the Internet is a fun read for those of us who share some of Paul’s memories and experiences. We remember what it was like and we like to remember. The landscape has shifted, and no doubt it will shift again as technology’s advancement continues apace. This book serves as a reminder of the simple truth that when gains are made, sometimes something is lost.

Chocolate, a beloved treat worldwide, is often criticized for its high sugar content and environmental impact. However, Swiss researchers have pioneered a new method to produce healthier and more eco-friendly chocolate by making the best of the entire cocoa fruit instead of wasting most of it.
Traditionally, only cocoa seeds are used, leaving the fruit’s pulp (果肉) and outer shell as waste. The new approach extracts (提取) natural sweetness from the cocoa fruit itself, not requiring added sugar. Scientists found that the fruit's juice contains 14% sugar, which is concentrated into juice and mixed with pulp to form a gel (凝胶). This gel replaces sugar in chocolate production while boosting fiber content. The traditional system of cocoa production in Africa and South America is not environmentally friendly, as reported by BBC. The industry is also suffering from the high price of cocoa beans and the poverty of the cocoa farmers. Using the entire fruit could help deal with these two issues.
Developing the perfect recipe required wide-ranging testing. Trained experts evaluated various mixtures, balancing pulp quantities to avoid too thick or not sweet enough results. Beyond health benefits like regulating blood sugar and reducing fat intake, the method ensures a way that doesn’t use up or harm the earth’s resources. Cocoa farming in Africa and South America faces issues like destroying forests and farmer poverty. By processing the whole fruit locally, farmers gain extra income and job opportunities.
Major chocolate companies are adopting parts of this approach, though none have fully removed sugar. Roger Wehrli encouraged producers to accept the method, stating it could find new and better ways to improve the industry. By 2025, the European Union will no longer allow cocoa that harms forests, which may reshape global supply chains. Roger Wehrli also noted, “Using the whole fruit benefits both farmers and the planet — it’s economically and ecologically promising.”
