Can you imagine a sea of sand about three times bigger than India It is the Sahara Desert, the largest desert in the world. It covers 11 countries in North Africa and is over 9 million square kilometers. That’s about 30% of Africa.
In the Sahara Desert, temperatures are very different during the day and at night. It is much hotter during the day than at night. During the day, the hottest time is between 2 pm and 4 pm, when the temperature rises to 33℃. But it is very cold at night. The coldest time is at 4 am, when the temperature falls to -1℃.
How to stay alive in the Sahara Desert Marco Rivera, our survival expert, has some tips.
First, take warm clothes and a blanket (毛毯). During the day, cover your body, head and face. Clothes protect you from the sun and keep water in your body. You will also need a warm blanket at night. It can get cold very quickly. Second, try to drink some water at least once every hour. You need your water to last as long as possible. Drink only what you need. Third, try to close your mouth and not to talk. When you talk, you lose water from your body. Last, eat as little as you can, because if you eat, you will get thirsty and drink all of your water more quickly. You can live for three weeks with no food, but you can only live for three days without water.

Recently we had a new student start at Gumnut Primary. Her name is Amina. When Mr Yarrum introduced her, her eyes were looking down to the ground and her shoulders were curling (弯曲) forward. She was covering her face a little with the scarf on her head. Mr Yarrum helped Amina to put away her school bag and find a table and chair at a shared desk.
I could understand Amina, because I was once the new kid at Gumnut Primary too. Two years ago, my mum got a new job in another city, so my family moved and I couldn’t stay at my old school. I have been the same as Amina, being introduced to a class full of new faces. This made me wonder why someone would have to leave their country and move away to the other side of the world.
When the bell went for lunch, I waited around to speak with Mr Yarrum. I wanted to know why Amina and her family had moved so far away from their home to Australia. Mr Yarrum told me there was a war in her country, and they moved here to be safe.
At lunchtime, I saw Amina sitting by herself on the bench (长椅). She looked lonely, so I decided to go over and sit with her. Amina didn’t speak any English, which made it a bit difficult to communicate with her. This got me thinking, maybe I could use body language to invite Amina to come and play handball with me and my other friends. I waved for her to follow me and gestured (做手势) with my hands to play a game of handball. ________
Amina turned out to be very good at handball, and by the end of lunch had a big smile on her face.
8. How did Amina feel when Mr Yarrum introduced her to the class

B.Being kind is a good way to communicate with others.
C.Speaking the same language makes a difference in friendship.
D
One morning, I got up early and decided to make an apple pie for my mum. I called my grandma for help, followed a TV program to make jam and waited excitedly. I enjoyed every step so much that I didn’t notice three hours pass by. Although the pie looked terrible and was not that delicious, Mum ate it up and told me it was the best pie that she had ever had. For the first time, I realized that although I didn’t make the pie successfully, I really enjoyed the process (过程).
The process is important because it brings us something bigger than the result itself. That is, we always have new experiences during the process, which may help us improve our skills or form good relationships with others. If we just concentrate on the result and do not enjoy the process, we will be more likely to feel disappointed and want to give up. As a result, we will never understand the real meaning of success.
But in this busy world, we see a lot of successful people are in competition. How can we enjoy the process Well, the question has the answer in itself.
Don’t always compare yourself with others. First of all, we are all different. And success means different things to us. For some, success means being famous, while for others, it may be health or power. Ride your own ride.
Slow down. You need to stop expecting immediate results in what you do and learn to be patient. Impatience leads to unhappiness. Do it slowly, but never stop.
Reward yourself. Divide the process into small steps, and give yourself a reward after completing each of them. Rewarding yourself for small wins can go a long way. For example, if you are in the process of losing weight, enjoy your favourite cake once in a while.
12. What does the underlined word “which” mean in Paragraph 2
A.Real success. B.New experiences. C.Happiness.
13. What can we learn from the passage
A.The writer will never make a pie again.
B.The writer’s mum didn’t like the pie at all.
C.A small step with a reward can help you keep going.
14. What is the structure of the passage
15. What’s the passage mainly about
A.Enjoy the process. B.What does success mean to us C.Never give up.

Dear Paul,
I’m glad to hear you’re coming to China! I’d like to tell you something important.
There are some useful customs for you to follow when attending a Chinese party. First, you’d better bring a small gift, such as fruits or flowers, to show your politeness. Second, arrive on time or a little earlier. Being late is considered impolite.
As for table manners, wait for the host to start eating first. Don’t stick your chopsticks upright in the bowl, which is bad luck. Also, try different dishes and praise the food properly. It will make your host happy.
I hope these suggestions are helpful to you. Wish you a wonderful trip in China!
Yours,
Li Hua
