We welcome you to attend a campus visit of Harvard College. A campus visit consists of a one-hour information session with an admission officer and 1-2 current undergraduate students, followed by a one-hour campus tour led by a current undergraduate student. I have always been indecisive and scared of wasting money. When it came to travel, this meant I was eager for someone to tell me where to go, what to see and what to eat. Before any holiday or day out, I’d already explored the area on Google Earth, watched videos on social media, and read online reviews. I knew exactly where I was going before I’d even left my house.
Then it struck me that, in trying to plan the perfect day, I had forgotten what makes these experiences joyful: spontaneity (随性). Even on holiday, every day was planned in great detail — and it was ruining the fun of travelling. Without realising, I’d turned travelling into work.
So, a year ago, I made a change. I banned myself from reading reviews and excessive planning for a trip to Barcelona. Instead, I chose an area I wanted to explore. Once I was there, that was it. I couldn’t rely on my phone, which meant no Google Maps, no Tripadvisor, and no TikTok.
It wasn’t easy at first. I felt a bit lost without my phone while wandering through unknown neighbourhoods. But that’s exactly why it’s so fun. Going in unprepared opens you up to surprises. Without being glued to directions, I noticed more of my surroundings. I wandered into museums I’d never heard of and explored interesting side streets.
Now, it’s the only way I’ll travel. Sometimes, I’ll find myself down a dead end, and sometimes the place I choose isn’t great. But for every miss, there are many more hits. The places I returned to were ones I’d found on my own.
Travelling without planning has made me more comfortable with making decisions. Trying to have the perfect holiday is no longer the point; it’s about living in the present and making good memories.

Cities are often hotter than surrounding areas, a phenomenon known as the heat island effect. Recently, scientists have discovered a similar phenomenon related to rainfall which is called the “urban (城市) rainfall effect”. It means that cities tend to receive more rain than nearby rural (农村) areas. “This is everywhere,” said Dev Niyogi, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin. This difference in rainfall has also grown over the last twenty years as the climate continues to warm.
This effect influences all cities, especially dense and rapidly growing ones, many of which already struggle with flooding. Cities can attract rain for several reasons. First, large buildings slow down incoming storms, allowing them to release rain. In addition, the heat from buildings and roads creates warm, moist air that rises, cools, and then falls as rain. “All these factors may contribute to the urban rainfall anomaly (异常现象),” said Xinxin Sui, a graduate student involved in the research. In the United States, cities such as Houston, Miami, and New Orleans are among the most affected and have experienced severe flooding in the past.
For their study, the scientists used satellite data to examine rainfall in over 1,000 cities from 2001 to 2020. They found that nearly two-thirds of these cities receive more rain than nearby rural areas. This effect has almost doubled in the past two decades, partly due to urban expansion and rising temperatures. Warmer air can hold more moisture, making rainfall heavier. The researchers also found that the bigger a city’s population is, the larger the gap in rainfall amounts between urban and rural areas.
Niyogi suggests that city planners should take these findings seriously and prepare for the increased rainfall to prevent flooding. At the same time, cities have an opportunity to better manage water resources by redirecting extra rainwater underground to refill groundwater supplies for future use. “We should think more about how we want to manage our water resources,” he said, as “there is an opportunity here.”

Why do online platforms lead to this problem Studies have proved that most people scroll through online content aimlessly to kill stress and clear negative feelings, yet this habit only makes inner unrest much worse in the long run.
Online content can distract us temporarily, but most information we meet online is empty and lacks real value. It is common to open a social app for a short break, and end up wasting hours on meaningless posts, trivial news and endless online updates. Such frequent shallow entertainment stops deep thinking and sincere self-examination, leaving people unable to focus on real needs and long-term goals. If we slow down and think rationally, we can take charge of our life instead of being led by endless online information.
The next time inner anxiety comes, do not try to eliminate it at once with digital entertainment (娱乐).
