About ten years ago, Kyle Lybarger was managing a private forest in Alabama to attract more deer for hunting. But the land was full of messy weeds (杂草), which he thought were not good enough to feed deer. So he used chemicals to clear the weeds, planted seeds, and cut down some trees to bring in more sunlight. However, the seeds failed to grow.
The next summer, something surprising happened. On the edge of the land where he hadn’t used chemicals or seeded, the place was covered with rich colorful plants. He had no idea what they were.
After he posted photos of the plants on the internet, a local botanist (植物学家) named Kevin England got in touch. Kevin pointed out they were rare plant species, which were perfect for various wildlife and had important value to the whole local ecosystem. “That was kind of when the light bulb went off in my head,” Kyle says. “Instead of managing the land for hunting deer, managing for what’s naturally here is probably the best choice.”
Kyle then started posting more photos of the rare plant species on social media to help people recognize these endangered plants and call for protection. Thousands of people followed him. In 2023, he even partnered with an artist to design a T-shirt featuring these plants, hoping to raise awareness and help pay for protection work. Kyle raised over $100,000 from T-shirt sales. He used most of it to buy 24 acres of land to protect rare plant species.
Kyle believes his greatest contribution is inspiring public protection of native plants. “One person, one yard, one-tenth of an acre can have a greater effect than you think,” he explains.

D.Lots of practice is the key to success.
Large glass buildings enjoy an attractive appearance and are widely adopted in modern building design. But they suffer from an unavoidable problem. Too much sunlight passes through the glass, causing indoor temperatures to rise greatly during hot summers. To keep a comfortable indoor temperature, air-conditioning (空调) devices have to work continuously, consuming a lot of electric energy.
Is it possible to create glass that can darken automatically(自动地) against strong sunlight, requiring no electric power at all Scientists from Aarhus University in Denmark have successfully invented a kind of smart glass to achieve this eco-friendly effect.
The invention relies on tiny silver structures called silver nanorings, which are fixed inside the glass. When strong sunlight meets these tiny rings, they respond by blocking unnecessary heat from passing through the glass. The stronger the sunlight becomes, the more heat it can block. Most surprisingly, the entire physical reaction continues naturally without using electricity.
With this smart glass, modern buildings can cut down energy use effectively. The material keeps indoor spaces cool in a natural way, reducing the use of air conditioners. Meanwhile, decreased energy use contributes to fewer carbon emissions (排放), bringing huge environmental benefits.
However, the new technology isn’t fully developed for the market yet. For one thing, the smart glass functions perfectly under specific weather conditions, and researchers are determined to help it better adapt to different climates. For another, producing the silver nanorings still requires high costs now.
Even so, researchers keep positive and firmly believe that these difficulties will be overcome in the near future. If the technology is widely applied, smart glass will be popular in offices, living buildings and even vehicles, creating an energy-saving world with zero electricity waste for temperature control.
9.Why does the author mention air-conditioning devices
A.To offer guidance on using air-conditioning.
B.To criticize people for wasting energy.
C.To show the problem of large glass buildings.
D.To compare different cooling methods.
10.How does smart glass work
A.It relies on huge structures. B.It darkens by using electricity.
C.It turns sunlight into power. D.It keeps unwanted heat outdoors.
11.What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about
A.Where smart glass can be applied.
B.When smart glass works perfectly.
C.Why smart glass isn’t ready for sale.
D.What makes smart glass expensive.
12.Which best describes the researchers’ attitude towards the future of smart glass
A.Doubtful. B.Hopeful. C.Uncertain. D.Uninterested.

六、书面表达

For two years, a small group of us ran through the streets near our university every weekday morning. We came from different parts of the world — Australia, Italy, China, and beyond — all studying at the same university in Beijing. We ran together, talked to each other in English about daily life and became close friends. Truthfully, we ran so we could talk.
Among us was my good friend Vicki, an Australian student. She was working hard to get her degree, but Chinese had always been her weakest subject. A few months ago, she had a Chinese vocabulary quiz (小测试) to pass. Every morning during our run, she handed us vocabulary cards and we quizzed her on pronunciations and word meanings. Finally, she passed the quiz.
But later Vicki was facing something much harder: the final Chinese exam — an oral (口语) test. She had to hold a five-minute conversation with a native speaker about a chosen topic, such as hobbies, campus life or travelling. “I can write. I can read. But when someone speaks to me in Chinese, my mind goes blank,” she told us, her voice shaking. Besides, the exam was only two weeks away.
She started talking about giving up our morning runs. “I need every minute to practice,” she said. “But I don’t want to lose ‘us’.” Her eyes were red.
That night, I called the others from the group. Li Wei, who grew up in Beijing, said, “She needs to communicate, not just memorize. The oral exam tests conversations about daily topics. What if we practice speaking Chinese on these topics with her while running ” We all loved the idea, but we needed to make it work.
注意:1.续写词数应为100个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

41.Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share a fun experience I had during the spring break. I went to a rural area and took part in the activity of harvesting wheat.
Under the guidance of local farmers, I held a sickle and started cutting the wheat stalks. The sun was blazing, and soon I was sweating all over. But as the wheat piles grew higher, so did my sense of accomplishment. This experience not only let me know the hardship of farmers but also made me cherish food more. It was truly an eye-opening and rewarding trip.
Yours,
Li Hua

The next morning, we gathered as usual to put our idea into action. We told Vicki that we would only speak Chinese during the whole run, and Li Wei, who is a native Beijing speaker, would correct her mistakes right away. We talked about campus life and travelling that are exactly the exam topics, and Vicki soon became relaxed and spoke more smoothly. We practiced every morning in the following two weeks, and she never missed our running time.
When the exam day arrived, Vicki was given a topic that she knew well. She talked about our morning running team in Chinese, which made the native examiner smile and nod all the time. She finished the five-minute talk easily and got a high mark. She told us how confident she felt when she spoke Chinese fluently. She later told us that our special running practice was the best help she had ever got for this exam. We hugged tightly, knowing our plan had worked perfectly.
