I am Bristol Joseph,13 years old. I grew up in a family that was very interested in gardening and being outdoors. One day, my mom and I found out that the monarch butterfly (帝王蝶) population was diminishing, so we decided to help. We did some research and learned that milkweeds are the only plants that monarch babies eat. That’s when I got the idea to start selling milkweed to help the monarchs. Then I was 11 years old.
I grow the milkweed plants, and people plant them in their yards. Then more butterflies are able to find food. I’ve been selling the plants around my community, at kids’ festivals and other events. Over the years, I’ve won a few awards that helped me out with some money. One of the awards even made me run a nonprofit.
The hardest part of getting started was building good business—getting a good group of people to come and buy the plants. I also had to speak up for myself and get my work out there.
The most important thing I’ve learned through this experience is to keep working hard. Even when things aren’t going your way, keep working hard and continue to help the environment.
If people want to help butterflies at home, they can plant milkweed and other native plants. They need to make sure they’re planting the right milkweed for their area. Also, don’t use pesticides, because they can hurt butterflies. People can even let a patch (小片) of grass grow wild to let native weeds and flowers come up.
I definitely believe that kids can make an amazing impact on the world. Even though we are kids, we can make a big difference. A small idea can turn into something amazing. With the monarch butterflies, I didn’t know if many people would be interested, but there turned out to be a lot of interest.
24. What does the underlined word “diminishing” probably mean in paragraph 1
A.Increasing. B.Maintaining. C.Contacting. D.Reducing.
25. What can be inferred about Bristol’s business at first
A.It was located in a public garden.
B.It won widespread praise immediately.
C.It faced difficulties attracting customers.
D.It got help from a nonprofit organization.
26. What does Bristol suggest people do to help butterflies
A.Grow non-native flowers in gardens.
B.Use chemicals to kill harmful insects.
C.Plant milkweed and avoid using pesticides.
D.Remove wild grass to keep the yard tidy.
27. What is Bristol’s attitude toward kids’ role in making a difference
A.Doubtful. B.Hopeful. C.Unclear. D.Worried.

In the age of globalization today, different cultures are interacting more than ever before. While this has brought about many positive exchanges, it has also put some unique cultures at risk. Anthropologists who study human race, and cultural preservationists are working hard to protect cultural practices that are in danger of disappearing.
“Globalization has led to more uniform (一致的) cultures in some ways,” said Dr. Elena Rodriguez, a professor at the University of Cambridge. “Popular culture, driven by media and the Internet, often weakens the influence of local and traditional cultures. We need to understand the possible effects of this trend (趋势) and find ways to protect the cultural heritage that makes each community unique.”
Using a large database of cultural practices from around the world, Dr. Rodriguez and her team studied how cultural traditions are passed down through generations and how they adapt to modern influences. They discovered some cultural practices are more adaptable than others. For example, traditional festivals with strong community participation tend to survive better, while some niche (小众的) handicraft-making skills are at risk of being lost due to a lack of younger generations interested in learning them.
Another significant factor affecting cultural diversity is urbanization (城市化). As people move from rural areas to cities, they often leave behind some of their traditional ways of life. “In urban environments, there is a trend to adopt more mainstream cultural standards,” said Dr. Rodriguez. “This doesn’t mean rural cultures are not good, but rather that the pull of modern urban living can weaken the uniqueness of traditional cultures.”
So, what can be done to protect cultural diversity “Education is key,” Dr. Rodriguez noted. “By teaching younger generations about the value of their cultural heritage in schools, we can develop a sense of pride and responsibility.”
Moreover, governments and international organizations can support cultural protection projects. This can include providing funding for cultural festivals, popularizing local languages, and protecting historical sites. Cultural tourism projects can be designed to introduce people to lesser-known cultural traditions all over the world.
28. What effects does globalization have on cultures according to paragraph 1
A.It has more positive effects.
B.It has little impact on cultures.
C.It brings about a mixed bag.
D.It helps protect traditional cultures.
29. What does Dr. Rodriguez’s study mainly focus on
A.How cultural standards are influenced and changed.
B.How traditional festivals are celebrated and protected.
C.How handicraft-making skills are taught and learned.
D.How cultural traditions are handed down and survive.
30. What does Dr. Rodriguez think is the key to protecting cultural diversity
A.Designing cultural tourism projects.
B.Educating the young generations.
C.Providing funds for cultural festivals.
D.Teaching local languages at schools.
31. What is a suitable title for the text
A.Protecting Cultural Diversity: A Global Mission
B.Respecting Cultural Globalization: A Shared Belief
C.Observing Traditional Festivals: A Wide Celebration
D.Understanding Traditional Cultures: A Basic Requirement

Exciting news from the University of Waterloo! A team of devoted researchers, led by PhD student Wei Wei, has made a remarkable discovery that holds the potential to change plastic waste into acetic acid (醋酸), using the power of sunlight.
Dr. Yimin Wu, a professor at the university, shared their inspiring vision, saying, “Our goal was to solve the plastic pollution challenge by changing microplastic waste into high-value products using sunlight.” This mission is especially significant as plastic waste, particularly microplastics, has spread across ecosystems worldwide, raising serious concerns about its impact on both wildlife and human health.
With global plastic recycling rates still falling behind, this research team has stepped up to the challenge. They have developed a bio-inspired photocatalysis (光催化) method using special iron atoms (铁原子). This technology copies how certain fungi (真菌) break down organic matter, showing the creativity of nature.
When placed under sunlight, the material drives a series of chemical reactions that change plastic into acetic acid with high selectivity. The reaction takes place in water, which is particularly important for addressing plastic pollution in waters.
The study shows that this method can effectively produce acetic acid from common plastics and it works well even with mixed plastic types. This adaptability makes the approach a promising replacement to traditional plastic burning, supporting eco-friendly use of materials and offering a fresh strategy for upcycling.
Roy Brouwer, coauthor of the research, stresses the benefits of this innovation, noting, “In terms of business and society, the financial and economic benefits related to this innovation seem promising.”
The research findings also open up exciting new ways for directly addressing microplastics. By breaking down plastics at the chemical level, this process could play an important role in preventing the build-up of microplastics in our water systems.
While still at the laboratory stage, the team expects that this approach could be adapted for large-scale, broader environmental cleanup and the photocatalytic upcycling system can be further improved.
32. What led the research team to start their study originally
A.Rising recycling rates of plastic.
B.Business profits from acetic acid.
C.Discovery of sunlight’s chemical power.
D.Plastic pollution’s widespread harm.
33. What can we learn about the photocatalysis method
A.It can be applied to various plastics.
B.It can completely remove microplastics.
C.It breaks down plastics faster than burning.
D.It needs high temperatures to support reactions.
34. What does the team expect of their research findings
A.Helping reduce chemical use.
B.Coming into use immediately.
C.Being used on a larger scale.
D.Opening up a market for acetic acid.
35. Where is the text most probably taken from
A.A guidebook to waste treatment.
B.A scientific research report.
C.A brochure on acetic acid production.
D.A review on the plastic industry.

Lisa noticed her mother’s old gloves (手套) lying on the chair. They had several holes, and the wool was thinning. Every morning, her mother put them on and rode her bicycle to work through the cold wind. Lisa watched her from the window, thinking, “Her fingers must be freezing.” She walked over and touched the worn-out cloth, feeling the rough holes. Her heart ached. She remembered how her mother always smiled and waved goodbye without a single complaint. “I have to do something,” Lisa whispered to herself. That night, she made a secret decision: she would buy a new pair of warm gloves.
But Lisa had no money. She sat on her bed, hugging her empty piggy bank, and thought hard. Suddenly, an idea came. The next day after school, she knocked on Mrs. Green’s door. “Mrs. Green, would you pay me to walk your dog and clean your garage ” she asked shyly. The elderly neighbor’s eyes lit up. “What a helpful girl! Yes, I’ll give you a small fee each time. ” Lisa’s heart jumped with joy. She quickly calculated (计算): two weeks of work might be just enough. “I can do it!” she said to herself, running back home with a new fire in her chest.
Every day after school, Lisa walked Mrs. Green’s playful dog, Buddy, then swept the garage and organized dusty boxes. Her arms ached, and her clothes got dirty, but she never stopped. Each coin she earned went straight into her piggy bank with a satisfying clink (叮当声). She often imagined her mother’s surprised face on the gift-giving morning. “Mum’s fingers will be warm,” she whispered while cleaning the floor. Her mother noticed Lisa coming home tired but thought she was just playing outside. Lisa kept her secret plan hidden, saving every penny. The coins piled up, and so did her quiet joy.
After two weeks of hard work, Lisa finally had enough money.

After two weeks of hard work, Lisa finally had enough money. She rushed to the clothing store downtown right after finishing work for Mrs. Green. She picked a pair of soft thick wool gloves in her mother’s favorite color. She held the gloves tightly, counting the coins one more time and paid the shopkeeper. On the way home, she wrapped the gift neatly with beautiful colored paper, hiding it under her pillow secretly. She couldn’t wait to see her mother’s reaction.
The next morning, Lisa stepped into her mom’s room softly and put the gift on her pillow. When her mother woke up and saw the package, she opened it in surprise. Tears rolled down her cheeks the moment she saw the warm gloves. She pulled Lisa into a tight hug, asking where she got the money. Lisa told her all about walking the dog and cleaning the garage. Her mother kissed her forehead warmly, saying it was the most precious gift she had ever received. The cold winter wind would no longer freeze her hands, for her daughter’s love kept her warm forever.
