It all started with a short video. I watched a boy finish a long-distance run on TV before his family went for a relaxing picnic in the countryside. The lively scene touched me deeply, and a special idea came into my mind at once. I, an eight-year-old boy, also hoped to join a wonderful outdoor picnic. Unlike most kids who chose to ride or walk casually, I made up my mind to get there by running all the way.
I was born with weak legs, so long-distance running had always been tough for me. Running to the distant picnic site was absolutely a huge challenge. Even so, my dad made a deal with me, and we started strict training right away. Over the following three years, I stuck to daily practice. I learned to run steadily, adjust my speed properly and build up physical strength. My family and teachers never left me alone, offering sincere care and constant encouragement all the time.
Sometimes my legs ached terribly and felt tired after hours of practice, yet I held on firmly. At last, the long-expected day arrived. I stood at the starting point, with my family and friends gathering around to cheer for me. My dad gently asked if I needed a hand, but I replied with a firm “No”. I stood steady, began to run slowly, and then gradually sped up with everyone’s warm support.
Suddenly, I tripped over a small stone and lost my pace. I stayed calm, because we had practiced to deal with such situations. I got to my feet quickly, took a deep breath and kept moving forward. Before long, I arrived at the destination. My mom waited there, wearing a bright smile and holding her arms wide to give me a big hug.
This experience taught me a valuable lesson. Life is full of unexpected troubles. When difficulties stand in your way, never choose to quit. Pull yourself together and keep moving toward your goal. Your hard work will surely pay off, and there will always be warm-hearted people cheering for you along the journey.
24. What was the author’s unusual decision
A.To go for a picnic by bike.
B.To train with his family.
C.To watch a running video.
D.To run to the picnic site.
25. What can we know about the author’s training process
A.It was strict and long-lasting.
B.It was short but interesting.
C.It included no physical practice.
D.It concerned his friends.
26. Which word can best describe the author
A.Selfless. B.Gentle. C.Determined. D.Clever.
27. What does the story mainly tell us
A.Family support leads to success.
B.Confidence is the most important.
C.Don’t stay indifferent to our families.
D.Never give up in the face of hardship.

All but two of Austria’s 96 glaciers (冰川) have retreated (缩小) over the last two years, the monitors in the Alpine country reported on Friday, saying the “dramatic development” highlights the impact of climate change. The latest report from the Austrian Alpine Club shows the Alpeiner Ferner in the western Tyrol region and Stubacher Sonnblickkees in Salzburg to the east are facing the greatest loss, each with a retreat of more than 100 meters (about 328 feet) . The average retreat was more than 20 meters (about 65 feet) .
“The breakdown of the glacier tongue is also progressing at the Pasterze, Austria’s largest glacier, making the results of climate change visible,” the club said in the report covering 2024 and 2025. It added, “The report confirms once again the long-term trend: The glaciers in Austria continue to retreat significantly in length, area, and volume.” Neighboring Switzerland, which is home to the most glaciers in Europe, has noted a similar retreat in its glaciers in recent years, a trend that has been reported around the world.
The retreat of the glaciers in Europe has implications for drinking water, power generation, agriculture, infrastructure, recreational activities, the Alpine landscape and more. “The glaciers are melting, and with every new report, the urgency grows,” club vice president Nicole Slupetzky said. “It’s no longer a question of whether we can still save the glaciers in their old form; it’s about relieving the results for ourselves.”
Poor weather conditions such as low snowfall, warm temperatures including an exceptionally hot June last year — nearly 5 degrees Celsius above the average — have contributed to the retreat, the club said. These factors accelerated the melting of ice. Without a shift in weather patterns, the trend will likely worsen.
Such changes in the Alps should serve as a “wake-up call” for policymakers and the public in their behavior, the club said. It added the current figure was lower than the figure during the previous two years, but still ranked as the eighth-largest retreat in the 135 years of measurements.
28. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A.All the glaciers in Austria have retreated.
B.Glacier retreat is a widespread phenomenon.
C.Pasterze is the largest glacier in Switzerland.
D.People fail to know the results of climate change.
29. Which can explain the underlined word “implications” in paragraph 3
A.Quick solutions. B.Simple designs.
C.Possible effects. D.Full explanations.
30. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A.The causes of the glacier retreat.
B.The change of weather patterns.
C.The threats of climate change.
D.The average temperature of Austria.
31. What does the last paragraph stress
A.The current situation is better.
B.The glacier retreat is still serious.
C.Measuring glacier retreat takes time.
D.People’s behavior has changed a lot.

For decades, NASA has advanced on-board spacecraft computer processors that perform the functions needed to support mission success.
Space computing began in the 1960s during the Apollo missions. At that time, Apollo Guidance Computer played an important role in guidance, navigation, and control. Later, special processors that could work under strong radiation (辐射) became widely used in space exploration.
NASA has successfully used computers on Mars rovers, orbiters, and space telescopes. These processors have worked for years in extreme conditions. However, future space missions will become longer and more complex. As a result, scientists need computers with stronger computing power and greater independence.
In this case, NASA worked with a company to develop a new technology called High Performance Spaceflight Computing. This new system can provide more than 100 times the computing power of older processors. It also combines computing and networking in one device, which helps reduce energy use and system cost.
The new processors include different types for different mission needs. One version is designed for deep-space missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. It can work safely in difficult environments and support real-time autonomous tasks. Another version provides fault tolerance (容错性) and cybersecurity for low Earth orbit satellites.
Using advanced Ethernet to connect multiple sensors (感应器) or collect several chips, High Performance Spaceflight Computing technology allows spacecraft to process large amounts of data onboard and autonomously make real-time decisions, such as driving rovers at high speeds or sorting scientific images. Continuous system health monitoring and an integrated security controller ensure these complex operations remain safe and reliable.
This technology is not only useful for space missions. Similar processors may also be used in medical equipment, communication services, artificial intelligence, aviation, and energy systems on Earth. By sharing the same technology in space and daily life, the new system may reduce risk and cost for both government and commercial users.
32. Why does NASA need a new generation of space processors
A.Future missions require more advanced systems.
B.Spacecraft now depends less on computer systems.
C.Scientists hope to take part in more space missions.
D.Older processors cannot work in a difficult environment any more.
33. What can we know about the new processors for different missions
A.They are operated only in deep space.
B.They demand separate networks.
C.They are designed with special functions.
D.They mainly work for scientific research.
34. What is an advantage of the new computing technology
A.It features immediate decisions in space.
B.It controls all satellites from Earth.
C.It cuts the number of space missions.
D.It replaces sensors on spacecraft.
35. What does the author want to illustrate about the new technology
A.It will definitely reshape space exploration.
B.It is mainly developed for business use.
C.It can solve every problem in space travel.
D.It may affect both space and daily life.

In fact, a short purposeful break can refresh your brain and help you return with better focus. 36.___ If you spend the whole break scrolling through short videos, your eyes and mind may stay tired. So, to truly benefit, you need to plan your breaks just as carefully as your study sessions. Let’s explore some practical steps to make every break truly count.
Start by planning the break before you need it. Work for a clear block of time, such as 40 or 50 minutes, and then stop. 37.___ A walk, a glass of water, a few stretches or simply looking out of the window can work well.
38.___ Without a limit, “five minutes” can easily become half an hour. Set a timer and place it where you can hear it. When it rings, go back to the first small task on your list.
Your phone may be the biggest challenge. 39.___ Leave it across the room, or use a paper book, music player or water bottle instead. The point is to make the healthier choice easy.
Finally, treat breaks as part of learning, not as a reward you must feel guilty about. 40.___ You will study with more energy, and your free time will feel freer too.
A.Decide how long the break will last.
B.Not all breaks, however, have the same effect.
C.This helps your brain switch from work to rest.
D.So do something different from sitting at a screen.
E.It can pull you into another long period of attention.
F.In this way, rest supports your plan instead of breaking it.
G.You should take the longest break when homework is hardest.

It was a bright Saturday morning in October when my class set off for our school hiking trip to Green Mountain. The autumn leaves painted the hills in gold and red, and everyone was in high spirits. I walked with my best friend Lily, chatting and laughing as we climbed the winding trail.
At noon, we reached the top and enjoyed a picnic lunch together. The view was amazing—hills stretched far into the distance. After eating, I took out my camera and asked a classmate to take a photo of Lily and me. In my excitement, I put my backpack down beside a large rock and forgot all about it.
When it was time to go back down, I joined the group and walked with Lily, still talking happily. It wasn’t until we reached the parking lot that I suddenly froze. My backpack! I had left it at the top. Inside were my textbooks, my wallet, and the house key my mother had given me that morning.
My face turned pale. The teachers had already started calling names, and the buses were about to leave. There was no way I could climb back up in time. Tears came to my eyes as I thought of my mother’s worried face.
Just then, a tall man in a green jacket walked over. He had been hiking alone and had heard me talking to Lily. “I saw your backpack near the big rock,” he said with a warm smile. “I’m going back up to enjoy the sunset. I can bring it down for you.”
I looked at him, unsure what to do. My teacher, Mrs Wang, came over and asked for his phone number. He wrote it down on a piece of paper and handed it to me. “Don’t worry,” he said. “I’ll take good care of it. Call me this evening.”
I watched the man walk back up the trail, holding the paper tightly in my hand.

I watched the man walk back up the trail, holding the paper tightly in my hand. Standing beside the bus, I stared at his figure disappearing into colorful woods, full of gratitude and anxiety. Lily patted my shoulder to comfort me while Mrs Wang promised to wait for a while in case the man came back soon. All my classmates cheered me up, which eased my worry a little. Before long, the teacher told us we had to get on the bus and go home. I sat by the window, keeping the slip of number firmly, hoping everything would turn out fine.
That evening, I called the number he had given me. The man answered the phone warmly and told me he had picked up my backpack safely. He said he would pass my community tomorrow morning and hand it to me at the gate. The next day, I met him with a box of homemade cookies to express my thanks. He smiled and said he was glad to give a hand. This unforgettable experience taught me kindness exists everywhere and we should always pass warmth to others.
