A lot of people believe if you don’t get a full-time job out of college, it’s because you couldn’t or you aren’t “good” enough. I’m here to tell you, I don’t care what those people think and you shouldn’t either.
With that being said, I wouldn’t suggest taking a random job just to avoid the real world. However, if a job you absolutely love is available, I say go for it.
Graduating from college doesn’t mean you want to work from 9 am to 5 pm every day. If you have an opportunity to work for a company you love, take it. Life is about having fun along the journey so if the right part-time job comes along, take it because it may be a once-in-a-lifetime chance.
I was offered a position to work for the Lakers as a part-time corporate partnerships assistant. As soon as I received that offer, I jumped for joy! You can not often get the opportunity to work for the greatest franchise (职业运动队) in sports, so I knew I couldn’t pass up the chance. I turned down several full-time offers to take this job because I wanted to have fun and take advantage of this experience. Not only was I able to work for the Lakers, but I can share this experience with my friends and family who love the Lakers and hearing my stories.
In my situation, taking a part-time job gave me the freedom to pursue my entrepreneurial (创业的) desires. Since I would be working a few days a week, I could use the other days to start a business or create a platform to inspire people around the world. For around 10,000 years, humans have been cultivating the land to grow crops-but at what cost Agriculture is to blame for most land degradation, accounting for 80% of deforestation, 23% of greenhouse gas emissions and 70% of global freshwater use. One proposed solution to ease these negative agricultural effects is to utilise the unoccupied space above ground to cultivate crops. Known as vertical farming, this practice adopts layered systems to grow fruits and vegetables in soilless containers, watered either directly at the roots or through substrates like hemp and coconut fibres.
Vertical farming reduces the land needed to produce crops and allows farmers to precisely control the light, temperature and nutrients. But is it sustainable A 2025 study compared the efficiency of lettuce produced in soil to that grown in vertical farms. Their results showed that vertical farms can deliver more than 20 times the yield of field farms and use about eight times less water than water-thirsty land farms in Spain.
However, it’s not all good news for vertical farming. The same study also revealed that greenhouse gas emissions remain higher in vertical farming, even when powered by renewable electricity. This was largely due to the carbon-packed “fibre plugs” (纤维插塞) used in place of soil. The researchers suggest that alternative materials, such as coconut coir, could reduce the carbon footprint.
The potential of vertical farming lies in light control. While basking in natural sunlight, traditional land crops are exposed to the full spectrum of light. Those grown in controlled vertical farms, however, can be subjected to light wavelengths of a specific colour. Studies have found that blue light helps produce strong, compact leaves and stems, while far-red light can raise lettuce yields by 30% and increase the photosynthesis rate of Chinese kale by 59%.
The future of vertical farming may be shaped by further automation. In 2023, China announced the world’s first unmanned vertical plant factory. The 20-storey automated facility controls seeding, cultivation, harvesting and packing without human intervention. AI manages irrigation, nutrient supply and lighting. The facility can produce over ten harvests of green vegetables annually, with lettuce ready every 36 days. “In densely populated cities, plant factories can replenish the city’s daily vegetable supply and improve its self-sufficiency,” said researcher Wang Sen.
