In recent days, Chinese agricultural technician Yang Xiugang has been receiving messages from Muhammad Usman, one of his trainees in Nigeria, asking for farming advice. Over the past few years, Yang has been devoted to helping farmers like Usman.
Born in Cengong county in Southwest China’s Guizhou province, Yang started to learn hybrid rice production techniques in 1998, when the manager of the county’s seed company came to his town to develop the industry. After mastering the skills, he was hired by the company as a technician. Recommended by his employer, Yang set out on an African-aid program to share agricultural technology abroad and has worked in several countries over the past decade.
Yang has been based in Jigawa State, Nigeria, since 2021. "The climate there is completely different from that in China. Temperatures swing sharply between day and night. Seedlings (幼苗) grow very fast-producing a new leaf every three days, compared with four or five days in Cengong, "he says, "so local varieties tended to collapse across large areas during wind and rain. Coupled with weak management, fields often had more weeds than rice, so yields were naturally low. "
Faced with these challenges, Yang set aside his experience in China and started from the very beginning to understand the local planting cycle. He spent long days in the fields, observing rice growth and recording temperature and seedling development. After more than two years of research, he finally developed hybrid rice varieties adapted to local conditions. Thanks to his expertise, average rice yields rose from about 3, 000 kg per hectare(公顷) in 2021 to between 9, 750 and 10, 500 kg per hectare by 2025.
So far, Yang has trained 12 local farmers in Nigeria, including Usman, who has now become a skilled farmer. French company Airseas has promised to help cargo ships reduce their fuel consumption and cut their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by an average of 20%. And they're doing this with the Seawing——a 1, 000-square-meter kite that will fly 300 meters above the water’s surface. So the global shipping industry is apparently rediscovering the benefits and efficiency of sails.
The large, ship-sized kite is currently under development, and the company plans to open a factory to produce the Seawing in 2026. Airseas has promised that launching and operating a Seawing on a cargo ship will be automated, making it easy for crews to use. The kite and its launching equipment are fixed on a vessel’s deck; the crew only needs to press a few buttons, and the large kite will rise into the sky. That’s not to say cargo ships will abandon their engines entirely, but the kite will ease the load on these engines and lower fuel demand. Wind propels the ship, just as it did for centuries before industrialization.
A 20% emissions cut may not sound significant, yet transporting massive volumes of goods across the high seas accounts for 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This figure tops the aviation sector, which contributed roughly 2% of worldwide emissions in 2021 per the International Energy Agency. Shipping is therefore a key target for emission reduction: roughly 90% of all global traded goods are transported by sea, according to the International Chamber of Shipping.
Multiple firms have high hopes for this modern sail technology. Japanese shipping firm " K" Line has placed orders for the Seawing kite, and the European Union has also invested over $ 2 million in related funding.

This might sound like science fiction, but the reasons are practical, mainly financial. Hiring a caregiver is often too expensive for most families, sometimes costing two or three times more than a humanoid robot, which is estimated at about $20, 000.
I believe that robots will assume the care of many elderly people. A robot could potentially be a one-time expense, requiring minimal maintenance and receiving updates through cloud computing technology. And it could function around the clock. I’ve treated elderly patients who had been found wandering the streets or severely dehydrated(脱水的) because of gaps in care. A tireless robot—made possible by improved battery life and the ability to self-charge—could mitigate such problems. Reliable robotic companions could also accompany seniors outside the home for walks or to community events, enhancing rather than weakening their social connections.
Furthermore, while actual human contact is preferable, it has real drawbacks. Human caregivers can lose their tempers, but robots are unlikely to have that problem. In a recent study, observers found AI-generated responses to be more empathetic and compassionate(有同情心的) than those of humans-a surprising but telling result. A robot with AI-assisted voice technology could potentially understand emotion and intent, clarify instructions, and respond to commands in real time.

W: Hi, Philip. We can talk about where I should go on holiday in Italy now.
M: Sure! What kind of trip are you looking for
W: I want to experience some culture. And I love a little bit of shopping too. But most importantly, I like to relax in the natural landscapes of Italy. There are just so many places to choose from!
M: Italy’s full of beautiful spots. What about visiting Tuscany It has impressive landscapes, with forests close by too. Meanwhile, there are many world-famous art cities, including Florence, Siena, and Pisa.
W: That’s a great idea. I’ve also heard good things about the Amalfi Coast, known for its amazing coastline scenery, but I’m not sure if it’s too crowded.
M: It can get busy, but it’s definitely worth it for the views. If you prefer something quieter, you could also consider Lake Como. It’s peaceful, with a mix of nature and beauty.
W: That sounds amazing! I’ll definitely look into it.

W: Thank you for inviting me to spend the summer on your farm, Uncle Pete. I’m so sad that it’s over.
M: You’ve made yourself very useful in the past few weeks, Willa.
W: The first week was tough. I didn’t think I could manage to be up so early.
M: Yes, we rise with the animals. As the old saying goes, “Early to bed, early to rise. ”
W: Starting early, I really did a lot in one day—collecting eggs from the chickens, milking the cows, and making sure the sheep were all OK.
M: I guess it must be a very different way of life for you.
W: Yes. I don’t miss the polluted air or the noise of constant traffic day and night.
M: Well, you are welcome back here anytime. Have you packed everything
W: Yes. I also borrowed a book for the train ride. I hope you don’t mind.
M: No. It’s not my book. It’s your cousin’s. As he’s working overseas at the moment, I don’t think he’ll mind.
W: I’ll bring it back next time.
M: I’m sure he’d appreciate that. Well, it’s time to go. Let’s get your bags in the car.

W: Sometimes it’s easy to give up, but even when my book was rejected by fourteen different publishers, I knew I had stories to tell. Writing means everything to me. However, selling books isn’t just about writing. These book tours are exhausting. The good thing is that nowadays I have an agent who organizes everything for me. I don’t need to worry about missing the train and arriving at 2:00 p. m. instead of 11:00 a. m. as scheduled. Yes, that actually happened right at the beginning of my writing career. Looking around, I can see lots of people turn up to buy my books. But you should know I have never written for personal financial gain. You may not believe me. Even when I was surviving on a small income, making money was not the reason for continuing. I consider myself as lucky. I can write because, unlike so many children, I had great schooling. For them, if you buy my book today, please remember what will happen to the money. It is for a good cause.
