Recent investigations have shown a concerning issue in our everyday diet: certain foods and supplements (补品) may contain unsafe levels of lead (铅), a harmful heavy metal. These findings push people to pay closer attention to what they eat and drink.
Though lead comes into being naturally in the environment, it can cause side effects. Experts warn that even a little can accumulate in the body over time. “We don’t want to add more lead,” said Dr. Cohen of Harvard Medical School. He advises people to keep lead exposure (接触) as low as possible by choosing healthy foods and being careful with supplements, which can be a hidden source of lead.
Health organizations warn that lead is particularly dangerous for children, as it can damage the developing brain and nervous system and slow growth, leading to learning difficulties. For adults, long-term exposure may increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and kidney damage. Pregnant women are also at risk, as lead can affect fetal (胎儿的) growth.
So how much lead is too much U. S. authorities recommend a daily limit of 8.8 micrograms for adults and 2.2 micrograms for children. However, the average American already takes in about 6 micrograms per day through food and activities in everyday life. The real danger comes when extra sources — like certain supplements — push lead in our body beyond safe levels over weeks or months.
What can we do to protect ourselves While blood tests are available, prevention is more effective. Dr. Cohen suggests reducing the use of supplements that could contain unknown lead levels and choosing natural protein (蛋白质) sources like eggs, beans, tofu, and meats instead of protein powders. If you do use supplements, look for products tested by trusted third-party such as the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), which sets strict safety rules.
Simple daily habits can help reduce exposure as well. Washing hands and produce carefully, and checking homes for old lead-based paint or dust, are useful steps recommended by environmental agencies.

According to a new study, AI chatbots tend to agree with their users so much that they often give bad advice, encouraging harmful behaviors and damaging personal relationships. The study tested 11 leading AI systems and found they all showed varying degrees of sycophancy — behavior that was overly agreeable and supportive.
Lead researcher Myra Cheng explained that the team launched the study after noticing more and more people were using AI for relationship advice and sometimes being misled by how it tends to take their side, no matter what. Her team compared the responses of popular AI assistants with the shared wisdom of humans on an advice website. It turned out that AI backed users’ improper actions 49% more often than humans did.
The team also conducted experiments observing about 2,400 subjects, and they found those who shared their interpersonal dilemmas with an AI chatbot became more certain they were right and less willing to repair relationships. Co-author Cinoo Lee pointed out that it meant they weren’t apologizing or changing their behavior, and he added the findings were especially significant for teenagers developing social and emotional skills through real-life interactions.
Moreover, the harm doesn’t stop there — it is widespread. In medical care, researchers say sycophantic AI could lead doctors to confirm their first judgment rather than encourage them to explore further. In politics, it could strengthen more extreme positions by supporting people’s fixed opinions.
Addressing sycophancy, however, is challenging. Sycophancy is so deeply embedded (嵌入) that tech companies may need to retrain their AI systems, said Cheng. A simpler fix could be instructing chatbots to challenge users more — for example, by starting with “Wait a minute.” Lee also put forward the idea of a better AI: it could recognize users’ feelings and remind them to consider others’ emotions, or even encourage face-to-face communication instead of online chatting. That matters because the quality of social relationships is a key marker of health and well-being. Above all, we need AI that broadens people’s views rather than narrows them.
