I used to have a motorcycle (摩托车). One Sunday in summer, my 10-year-old daughter and I went for a ride in the countryside. We took the back roads to a park where the view was fantastic! The wind was strong enough to give more pleasure to riding the motorcycle.

Have you ever savored the convenience of takeout In today’s fast-paced world, busy students and professionals increasingly rely on delivered meals packed in plastic containers — quick fixes for lunch breaks or late-night cravings.
However, a new Chinese study reveals that frequent use of plastic takeout containers may elevate congestive heart failure risk by affecting gut (肠道) bacteria and causing inflammation (炎症). The research combines human population analysis and animal experiments to investigate how plastic chemicals impact heart health.
The study used two main steps to explore the link between plastic containers and heart disease. First, researchers checked the plastic takeout container use of over 3,000 people in China and compared it to their heart health records. They found that people who frequently used plastic containers had a higher risk of heart failure. Next, they tested this connection on rats. Scientists prepared water by boiling it in plastic containers for 1, 5, or 15 minutes to imitate real-life situation like making hot drinks. When plastic is heated, it gives off tiny harmful particles — previous studies found microwaved plastic containers can give off millions of these particles per square centimeter. The rats drank this contaminated water for months. By examining the rats’ waste, the researchers discovered changes in gut bacteria and increased chemicals related to inflammation and damage to rats’ heart tissues. Surprisingly, heating the containers for 1 minute or 15 minutes caused no difference in harm severity.
While the study didn’t identify exactly which chemicals in plastic caused the problems, it highlighted known harmful substances like BPA, which are common in food packaging and linked to cancer and other health issues. This research emphasizes the dangers of heated plastic and its potential impact on heart health.
This study adds urgency to reducing plastic food contact. Public health experts recommend avoiding microwaving plastics, using glass or stainless-steel alternatives, and transferring takeout to non-plastic containers. Though individual avoidance remains challenging, the findings highlight systemic needs for safer food packaging policies. With over 20,000 chemicals in plastics — many untested for long-term effects, researchers call for stricter industry regulations to protect circulatory health.

When Kurt Benirschke started collecting skin samples (样品) from endangered animals in 1972, he didn’t have a firm plan on what to do with them.
