A few years ago, teenager Mia Heller came across an article in her local newspaper about ongoing water quality issues in her neighborhood in Warrenton, Virginia. Tests had shown that the water available for daily consumption was highly polluted with microplastics (微型塑料). The article reported that the government would not be providing any funds for filtering (过滤) the water and that it was up to people to solve the problem.
Not long after the article came out, Heller’s parents used an advanced water filtering system at her home. However, seeing her mother replace the water filter membranes (膜) time and again, Heller set out to find a better solution.
In 2025, Heller had a working model. Heller used a reusable magnetic oil called ferrofluid to selectively catch microplastics as water flows through her filtration system.
While her model successfully filtered out the microplastics from the water, the system still needed to be maintained frequently as it did not self-recycle the ferrofluid.
Eventually, Heller found the perfect solution. Her current model, which is about the size of a standard bag of flour, consists of three parts. The first unit, about a liter in volume, holds the polluted water inside it, while the second stores ferrofluid. The core process takes place in the third unit, which is much smaller.
“A magnetic field pulls the microplastics out of the water, and the ferrofluid is recovered and reused,” explains Heller. As a stand-alone filter, the system can filter about one liter of water at a time, removing 95.52% of microplastics from the water and recycling 87.15% of the ferrofluid.
Speaking of Heller’s filtration system, Matthew J. Campen, a scientist at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, is excited. “Considering that her recent test results are just a starting point for a high school research project, one can only imagine that those percentages would improve with further efforts,” he says.

The same mindset applies to activities and commitments. Rather than filling every afternoon with lessons and practices, Beta Moms often allow more downtime. They recognize that overscheduling can create stress for both parents and children.
This approach also changes how mistakes are handled. A forgotten homework assignment or a missed deadline becomes a learning opportunity rather than a family crisis. Children experience results and develop responsibility.
Supporters believe the Beta Mom approach helps children build confidence and resilience (韧性). Mangroves (红树林) are among the most effective natural systems for capturing and storing carbon, but new research suggests that rising sea levels could significantly reduce that benefit and may even cause these coastal forests to release carbon in the future.
Made up of salt-tolerant plants that grow well along coastlines, mangroves account for less than 1% of Earth’s surface. Despite their relatively small footprint, they hold around 25% of all carbon stored in the ocean, with most of that carbon locked away in the soils beneath them. Because of this ability, mangroves play an important role in efforts to slow climate change.
Earlier studies have suggested that higher sea levels might actually increase carbon storage in mangrove ecosystems. However, new findings indicate the overall picture may be far more complex.
Researchers led by the University of Exeter, working with collaborators in Colombia and the United States, created a new modeling approach to explore how rising seas could affect carbon storage across whole mangrove forests rather than at individual locations. They found that while some areas may temporarily capture more carbon as sea levels rise, the overall amount of carbon stored across entire mangrove forests is expected to become smaller over the next century.
“Mangrove plants are highly specialized, and they require a certain duration of flooding (潮),” explained Luisa Fernanda Gómez Vargas from the University of Exeter. “If this period is longer than expected, a location will no longer be suitable. Mangroves will die back. The death of the plants and erosion (侵蚀) of carbon-rich soils can turn mangroves from a carbon sink (storing carbon) into a source (releasing it).”
Dr. Barend van Maanen, who leads the mangrove and carbon project at Exeter, said, “Mangroves face an uncertain future due to climate change and other human impacts on rivers and coasts. Our findings highlight that understanding the coastal landscape as a whole is very important when predicting how mangroves might respond to climate change, and how we can help them survive.”
