Nilas Corneliussen feels worried when a city turns quiet at night. “I much prefer to be in a dynamic city that never sleeps, and Bangkok gives me that, ” said the Swedish-born chef of a Nordic-Asian restaurant in Thailand’s capital.
While Thailand had long appealed to him, Corneliussen says he never imagined a career in cooking. Instead, he was drawn to Muay Thai (泰拳), or Thai boxing. On high school breaks, he even traveled solo to Thailand to join Muay Thai training camps. After sustaining a hand injury while boxing, he was forced to give up Muay Thai. However, he didn’t stop thinking about Thailand.
The very day after graduating from high school in Sweden, Corneliussen booked a one-way ticket to Bangkok and applied for a study visa. It wasn’t until halfway through his studies that he was inspired by a fellow student and friend who ran small Thai restaurants. However, there was something inside of him that was drawn to culinary arts. “The atmosphere inside the kitchen fascinated me ---everyone has to work together to make it happen. ” Corneliussen recalled.
At the time, the chef didn’t think he could pursue his new passion for cooking in Thailand. . Instead, he thought it would be best to go back to his roots and understand the flavors he’d grown up with before cooking anything else, so he finished his studies and moved back to Sweden. Starting out in a restaurant in Stockholm, he practised his skills. In 2019, he won the silver in the Bocuse d’Or, a world-famous international cooking competition, as part of the Swedish team.
Despite those successes, he knew he wanted to return to Asia to achieve his dream of culinary(烹饪的) arts. In 2022, Corneliussen made the move to a high-end restaurant, which opened the same year, and where he showcased casual Nordic food with Asian influences.
“In Thailand, I get this feeling of belonging and connection to the people, food and culture, ” he said.

For many kids, the Internet is at their fingertips. From computers to smartphones, a web of information is open to them. According to a new report from the Pew Research Centre, about three out of four kids aged 12 to 15 connect the Internet using a mobile device from time to time. Many younger kids are online too.
Julian Zeitlinger, 9, from New Jersey, uses his computer to watch videos and play games. To keep him safe online, his parents monitor his web use and discuss Internet safety with him. “I ask my parents if something is wrong. ” Julian says. Mobile devices offer more ways than ever to share personal information. The information can be dangerous in the wrong hands. A study found that 62% of children aged 8 to 17 have had an unpleasant online experience.
Have you ever had to enter a parent’s e-mail address when signing up for a website That safety measure is there because of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The law says sites for kids under 13 cannot collect personal information, such as a phone number or full name, without a parent’s permission.
This July, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will update COPPA for the first time since the law was created in 1998 when there were no smartphones. “The nature of the way kids get online has changed, ” FTC lawyer Phyllis Marcus said. When the changes take effect, COPPA will apply to(适用于) mobile devices and newer forms of advertising. It will expand what falls under “personal information” to include videos, photographs and services that give out users’ location.
COPPA doesn’t cover everything that can go wrong online. That’s why kids and parents need to know what to look out for and to stop and think before sharing information online.
“There is a misunderstanding that if a site is following COPPA, it is totally safe, ” says privacy expert Shai Samet. He runs KidSAFE, which checks if a site meets KidSAFE standards and is safe. “It’s important that kids know how useful the Internet is but that it can also be dangerous if you are not careful, ” he adds.

Space engineers from the University of Glasgow have published new research showing how reflectors (反射器) placed in orbit around Earth could increase the output of future large-scale solar farms by reflecting additional sunlight toward them even after the sun has set.
In their paper, the researchers described how they used advanced computer models to help determine the most effective method of using orbiting solar reflectors to produce additional power. Their models showed that putting 20 thin reflectors into orbit 1, 000 kilometers from Earth could reflect sunlight to solar farms for an extra two hours each day on average. The additional sunlight could increase the output of the world’s future solar farms, particularly after sunset when electricity demand is high. The output could be scaled up further by adding more reflectors or increasing their size.
The team developed an algorithm (算法) to determine how the reflectors could be arranged to catch the sun’s rays most effectively, maximizing the additional sunlight reflected to solar farms around Earth in the early morning and late evening. The researchers suggested that 20 reflectors could produce an extra 728 MWh of electricity per day — equal to adding an additional large solar power farm to Earth without the cost of construction.
Dr. Onur elik, one author of the paper, said, “Solar power has the potential to speed our race to reach net-zero, helping us to relieve the global impacts of climate change by reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. ”Moreover, the price of solar panels (太阳能电池板) has dropped quickly in recent years, increasing the pace of their adoption and paving the way for the creation of large solar farms around the world.
One of the major limitations of solar power, of course, is that it can only be generated during daylight hours. Putting orbiting solar reflectors in space would help to maximize the effectiveness of solar farms in the years to come. Strategically placing new solar farms in locations which receive the most additional sunlight from the reflectors could make them even more effective.

Jack is a 10-year-old who has development issues in his leg muscles, causing him to walk on the balls of his feet, which makes him unbalanced. He also has a speech delay, so he speaks slowly and can be hard to understand. However, it was this boy that totally changed my attitude toward life.
