Before breaking his back and injuring his spinal cord (脊髓) as a result of the fall from a high mountain in 2023, Darren Edwards’ dream had been to climb Mount Qomolangma one day. “I knew that Qomolangma was out for me after the accident, but I’m fortunate because I was able to take on some other great challenges with the support of some good friends,” Darren said.
Earlier this year, Darren joined the first all-disabled team to move across Europe’s largest icecap, unsupported and unassisted, on a sit-ski. It was during this trip that he realised he was no longer battling against his limitations. Rather, he was enjoying a very special adventure, one that he was able to do though he was disabled. “This was when I started dreaming of an even bigger adventure — to complete the furthest journey on a sit-ski in the history of the South Pole exploration,” he said.
Darren now skis for 10 to 12 hours every day. “I am not training to be able to go faster, but to make myself ready for an endurance (耐力) challenge because I need to cover 333 km in temperatures below -20℃ before reaching the South Pole,” he said. “But I am fairly pleased to have the opportunity to take on the sit-ski exploration, especially because for one year after my accident I did not imagine I would be able to take up such challenges.” He also believes that the adventure will provide inspiration for anyone who has a spinal injury or anyone who is struggling.
Realising how fortunate he has been to be encouraged by others to take on new challenges and adventures, Darren and a friend have started a business, Adaptive Expeditions. “I know how much I have gained from being able to take on adventures that I never imagined would be possible due to the spinal cord injury. So we want to inspire individuals with disabilities by offering the same opportunities and impactful explorations to push their limits and discover their potential,” Darren said.

With the graduation season approaching, many Chinese universities have introduced regulations on the use of generative AI in academic writing. Students admit that AI helps with tasks like literature gathering and data processing, but also notice its potential to make errors.
Education insiders consider the challenges brought by AI to higher education talent cultivation (培养) an unavoidable reality. They encourage students to use AI software as an auxiliary tool. According to the Beijing Youth Daily, several universities have carried out or announced regulations to monitor AI-generated content in thesis (论文) writing. For example, the undergraduate college of Hubei University (HBU) will conduct risk assessments on AI-assisted articles during thesis review, and those with a “high risk of AI ghostwriting” will require revision. Fuzhou University (FZU) will check for AI ghostwriting in undergraduate theses, with the conclusions affecting grades and outstanding thesis selection.
Some universities, like the Communication University of China (CUC), require students to disclose their AI use in their theses, including details of the AI model and usage process, and provide proper citations (引用). Tianjin University of Science and Technology (TUST) has set a 40% limit for AI-generated content in undergraduate theses, warning students if this threshold is exceeded.
Some students at CUC, with faculty support, are calling for the proper use of generative AI, pointing out the need to understand AI’s limitations and cultivate critical thinking. Professors Zhang Hongsheng and Zhu Wei also expressed that while AI can be used to generate new ideas, students should stick to originality and avoid over-reliance. Educators are called on to guide students in understanding relevant principles to prevent academic misconduct.

Scientists from the University of Otago’s Christchurch Medical School have discovered a direct connection between people’s vitamin C intake and their skin’s ability to produce collagen (胶原蛋白)and renew itself. The study, published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, clearly shows that skin health is influenced by vitamin C from daily food, not just by topical (外用的)creams applied to the skin surface. It also found that vitamin C levels in the skin are closely related to those in the blood. Therefore, eating more foods rich in vitamin C can effectively increase vitamin C levels in both the blood and the skin.
The research included 24 healthy adults from New Zealand and Germany. Those eating two SunGold kiwifruits daily raised blood vitamin C levels and saw a clear increase in skin vitamin C. This made skin thicker — due to more collagen — and sped up outer skin renewal. Lead researcher Professor Margreet Vissers described the results as surprising and said the strong connection between skin thickness and vitamin C intake is fully believable.
She noted the connection between blood and skin vitamin C is clearer than in other organs. “We were surprised by how closely blood vitamin C levels are connected to those in the skin,” she said. The research team also discovered that vitamin C in the blood can reach all layers of the skin and help the skin work better. Though vitamin C is often added to skincare products, it is not well taken in through the outer skin. However, skin cells can take in vitamin C from the blood very well.
SunGold kiwifruits were chosen for the study because they always have a high vitamin C content. But the researchers believe other foods rich in vitamin C, such as oranges and berries, can bring similar benefits to the skin. It is important to keep steady vitamin C levels in the blood because the human body does not store vitamin C for a long time. Professor Vissers suggested that healthy people can reach the best blood vitamin C levels with about 250mg of vitamin C every day through their diet.
