The train gave a high-pitched warning, and the doors closed with a sharp sound. A passenger threw herself into the seat next to me, holding a bunch of shopping bags tightly against her chest. “Anyone sitting here ” she asked. “No, please sit,” I replied, wishing the train would start moving soon.
I boarded at Cardiff Central Train Station after spending the New Year’s holiday with my parents. An environmental group, NatureServe, says 40 percent of animals and 34 percent of plants in the United States are at risk of disappearing. The group recently released a report based on 50 years of data from over 1,000 scientists across the country. It also found that 41 percent of ecosystems, including life forms, land and water, are facing collapse.
Many kinds of creatures are in danger, including crayfish, cacti, and freshwater mussels. For example, the Venus flytrap, a plant that “eats” insects, is now only found in the wild in a few places in North and South Carolina. About half of all U.S. cactus species and 200 kinds of trees may die out. Large northern grasslands are also among the most threatened ecosystems. The report provides pictures and maps showing where animals and plants are most at risk.
The main threats include environmental destruction, land-use change, invasive species, river pollution, and climate change. California, Texas, and the southeastern U.S. have the highest percentages of species at risk. Scientists say this is partly because these areas have many different forms of life and also have seen a lot of population growth in recent years.
Sean O’Brien is the president of NatureServe. He said the data in the report was very worrying. He hopes the report will help lawmakers pass wildlife protection laws. John Kanter is a biologist with the National Wildlife Federation, a non-profit group also based in Virginia. He noted that the report could steer state officials in creating effective action plans. Currently, federal money for wildlife protection is limited, but a proposed bill would greatly increase it.
Kanter added, “Our biodiversity is like a nature savings account. If we don’t keep track of what’s out there and what the threats are, there’s no way to take action first.” He believes that with better information, people can protect nature and build a healthier future for all living things. The report gives hope that by working together, humans can save endangered species and keep the planet beautiful for generations to come.

Archaeologists and researchers at the ancient Roman site of Pompeii have used artificial intelligence (AI) for the first time to digitally rebuild the face of a man killed in the AD 79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius that covered the city, offering a new way to understand one of history’s most famous natural disasters.
The digital picture shows a man whose remains, along with those of another person, were discovered was trying to get away from the city toward the coast of what is now Italy during the volcanic eruption. Researchers believe the man died early in the disaster, during a heavy fall of volcanic material.
The rebuilding was done by the Pompeii Archaeological Park, which announced on its website that it was done with the University of Padua and based on archaeological survey data from digs near the Porta Stabia burial ground, just outside the walls of the ancient city.
The announcement shows the AI-generated image of what the man could have looked like. He is shown running along a rough, debris-covered road, holding a large, shallow bowl over his head and using it as a shield while Mount Vesuvius is seen erupting in the background. The man was also carrying an oil lamp, a small iron ring and 10 bronze coins, personal objects that offer insight into his last moments as well as into daily life in Pompeii before the disaster.
Pompeii, a UNESCO World Heritage site near Naples, was buried under ash and pumice when Vesuvius erupted nearly 2,000 years ago, keeping the city and the remains of thousands of its people in very fine detail.
Old accounts, including those of Roman writer Pliny the Younger, describe Pompeii’s residents using objects to protect themselves as ash and debris covered the city. The digital picture was created by using AI and photo-editing techniques designed to turn skeletal and archaeological data into a realistic human likeness.
