When Derek Poskin first arrived in the historic city of Yangzhou in 2016, he was simply tracing a famous poem by Li Bai. However, the ancient city offered him more than beautiful views; it inspired a deep love for Chinese tea. “Coffee is for work, but tea is for life,” the 28-year-old American often says. What started as a personal interest quickly grew, and as he bought more leaves and teapots, he eventually turned his living room into a warehouse (库房). To share his passion, he launched a side project in 2018, which later became a global tea business.
Exploring China’s tea culture, however, was a big challenge. Rather than working through middlemen, Poskin chose to go directly to where the leaves grew. With a leap of faith, he once connected with a young farmer named Zhao via social media and headed to Guafengzhai, a remote village. There, he spent four days hiking through primitive (原始的) forests and learning the leaf fixation process from local families. To better understand the culture, he even lived in Chaozhou for a year to study the art of making clay teapots.
Through these journeys, Poskin’s understanding of tea changed from a search for “correctness” to an appreciation for diversity. He realized that Chinese tea culture is not fixed and varies by region: while people in Yangzhou might drink green tea straight from a glass jar, those in Chaozhou prefer elegant tea sets. “Any way you drink tea is the right way,” he says.
Now running a tea house named “Empty Cup” in Yangzhou, Poskin also shares his journeys worldwide through videos and a podcast. Looking ahead, he plans to turn his business into a social enterprise (企业) to finance local tea farmers. For young people dreaming of success, he offers a perspective of patience: “Great things take years of practice and improvement. Don’t rush it, and one day everything will come together.”

Several years ago, some doctors in Canada began “prescribing” (开处方) art to their patients, offering them free access to local museums. The idea was simple: by wandering among masterpieces and reflecting on paintings, patients might improve both their physical and mental health.
A new study from the UK now suggests this is far from an odd idea. Researchers at University College London (UCL) found that joining in arts or cultural activities once a week could slow biological aging almost as much as exercising once a week. In other words, “art is life” may have real scientific support.
The study followed more than 3,500 adults in the UK, examining how often they took part in artistic or cultural activities and measuring their biological age using epigenetic (表观遗传) clocks. These clocks estimate (预测) how fast a person is aging based on lifestyle and gene activity, rather than simply counting birthdays.
Activities included visiting museums or libraries, attending exhibitions, painting, crafting, singing, dancing, and more. Participants who engaged in such activities weekly showed significantly slower aging compared to those who rarely did. One measurement tool, DunedinPACE, found that weekly participation slowed aging by about 4 percent. Another clock, PhenoAge, suggested that weekly art engagement made people appear nearly one year younger biologically-almost twice the effect of weekly exercise.
The benefits were strongest among middle-aged adults. Interestingly, the greater the diversity of activities, the better the results. According to senior author Feifei Bu, this is the first evidence directly linking arts engagement with slower biological aging. Previous studies already showed that art reduces stress, lowers inflammation, and improves heart health — effects similar to exercise.
Lead researcher Daisy Fancourt, who has studied art’s health benefits for nearly ten years, believes these findings prove that art should be recognized as a health-promoting behavior. Just as doctors may prescribe nature walks or forest bathing, they might regularly prescribe museum visits or creative hobbies in the future. After all, whether enjoying natural landscapes or human-made masterpieces, both experiences seem to provide the same “ingredients” for better health and happiness.

The shipping industry is responsible for around 3 percent of carbon dioxide emissions. However, if wind-assisted cargo (货物) ships chose routes based entirely on where the winds are better, their fuel use could be significantly reduced or even completely eliminated.
There is growing interest among shipping companies in exploiting wind power to cut costs. Some are building ships with conventional sails from the beginning, while others are adding automated sails to existing ships.
Currently, some wind-assisted ships are still operated like conventional ones, taking a direct route at a set speed. To explore what could be achieved if routes and speeds were varied to optimize (使最优化) the wind boost, Thorben Schwedt at the German Aerospace Center and his colleagues set out to investigate. The team also assumed that ships could generate and store hydrogen (氢). When winds are very strong, some of the energy is used to generate hydrogen via electricity-generating turbines underneath a ship. This hydrogen can then power engines when the winds are low.
The researchers took data on historical weather in the Atlantic Ocean over one year and used a computer model to work out optimal routes. “The ships go completely wild routes,” says Schwedt. On average, the energy consumption of ships taking the optimal routes would be 75 percent lower than those taking direct routes. “Sometimes taking really big detours that you couldn’t think would work out,” says Schwedt. “With this approach, we managed to get energy savings from 50 to 100 percent.”
However, Tristan Smith at University College London points out that such high energy saving is only theoretically possible. “This very much depends on what average voyage speed you are targeting, which is set by the economics of a ship’s operation,” says Smith. “In our experience, the savings are significantly lower for most ships.”
