On October 4, a wildfire tore through a large area of Rapa Nui National Park on Chile’s Easter Island. The fire caused serious damage to several of the large, ancient stone statues that the island is famous for.
Easter Island is home to about 900 large stone statues called “moai”, which are carved stone statues with extremely large heads. The large statues were created over 500 years ago by the people known as the Rapa Nui people. Hundreds of moai are located near the Rano Raraku volcano, inside Rapa Nui National Park. The area has been named by the United Nations as an area that’s important to protect. Sadly, that’s also where the fire was most intense (强烈的).
The wildfire spread quickly through the Rapa Nui National Park. Park workers and firefighters worked for hours to control the fire. But the fire spread easily through the grassland around the area. It wasn’t until late the next day that the fire was brought under control. The park said it didn’t have enough volunteers to fight the fire more quickly.
The fire has burned as much as 1 square kilometre of land, mainly centred around the Rano Raraks volcano. There are 386 moai in and around Rano Raraku. It’s clear that the fire has damaged some of these moai. Ariki Tepano leads the group in charge of taking care of the park. He says, “The moai are totally blackened and you can see the effect of the fire upon them.”
Chile’s government says the stones would have become large as they were heated by the fire, and then shrunk again when the temperature dropped. This process weakens the stones and can cause cracks. The damage caused by the fire can’t be undone.
“All the fires on Rapa Nui are caused by human beings,” Ariki Tepano said. He points out the island needs more government support to be able to deal with situations like this one.
4. What is the purpose of Paragraph 2
A.To point out the value of moai.
B.To show the seriousness of the fire.
C.To stress the efforts in protecting the moai.
D.To add some background information.
5. What can we learn about the fire
A.It was not put out in time.
B.It first started on the grassland.
C.Somebody set the fire on purpose.
D.No volunteers helped control the fire.
6. What does the underlined word “shrunk” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean
A.Become hot B.Got small. C.Grown big. D.Turned black.
7. What is mainly talked about in the text
A.Firefighters worked hard to control the fire.
B.Fire damaged famous statues on Easter Island.
C.Stone statues were totally destroyed in the fire.
D.A wildfire tore through the entire Rapa Nui National Park.

Scientists at South Korea’s POSTECH have developed a remarkable silicone neckband that reads the slight muscle movements in your neck when you mouth words silently, transforming them into clear speech in your own voice. Unlike previous approaches relying on heavy EMG or EEG equipment with uncomfortable sticky electrodes, this device combines soft silicone, a tiny camera, and motion sensors (运动传感器) with an AI model trained on the wearer’s voice.
The key innovation lies in its Multiaxial Strain Mapping Sensor, which tracks not only how much the skin deforms (变形) during silent speech, but more importantly in which direction it moves. Reference markers printed on the neckband enable a tiny onboard camera to detect these deformations in real time. In one test, the system achieved 85.8% precision across 26 words, and its voice generation required less than 10 minutes of user recordings to reproduce a natural tone. Remarkably, it maintained a signal-to-noise ratio (比率) of 33.75 dB in 90 dB white noise — roughly the volume of a busy construction site — outperforming commercial EMG systems.
The potential applications are striking. Professor Sung-Min Park envisions the technology bringing back speech for laryngectomized patients and enabling communication in environments where traditional microphones fail, from industrial facilities and emergency response to military operations. The team has already confirmed its reliability during a gas blowback rifle trial, where extreme noise and physical vibration (振动) tested its limits.
Yet significant limitations remain. The current model recognizes only 26 set words, not free conversation, and precision drops to 39.72% when users walk or move their heads greatly. Researchers at Cambridge University have developed a similar choker-based approach with reportedly higher precision and emotional detection capabilities, though POSTECH’s unique edge lies in its faithful reconstruction of the user’s own vocal character.
The team now aims to expand its word bank, test across broader user groups, and improve the way it adjusts for body movement — steps that could transform this promising model into a truly liberating tool for those who have lost their voices.
8. How does the author introduce the neckband in paragraph 1
A.By offering experts’ comments on it.
B.By listing its technical instructions.
C.By describing its appearance in detail.
D.By comparing it with earlier devices.
9. What does the test data in paragraph 2 suggest
A.The device needs more user recordings.
B.The device works well in noisy settings.
C.The device beats other research products.
D.The device recognizes a wide range of words.
10. What is the last but one paragraph mainly about
A.The device’s future plan.
B.The device’s current weaknesses.
C.The device’s market growth.
D.The device’s competitive advantages.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards the technology’s future
A.Doubtful. B.Indifferent. C.Uncertain. D.Hopeful.
D
Is there really a timeless classic Recently, historian Rochelle Gurstein argued in her book that what seemed “written in stone” was actually “written in water”. In other words, a timeless classic is just a matter of creation, and classics come and go.
What is seen as a classic change with people’s tastes, making it hard to praise any one artwork. History shows that artists’ reputations (名声) rise and fall, forgotten artists are rediscovered, and views on greatness change often.
For instance, Johann Bach, the master of classical music, was unknown during his lifetime. His Baroque style conflicted with the music changes of his time, as the complex Baroque music was being replaced by simpler classical forms. After he died in 1750, Bach’s music fell out of fashion until Felix Mendelssohn, a German composer, reintroduced his genius to a new generation in the 1820s.
Changing tastes, new trends and critics’ (评论家) opinions shape how we see art, but art itself has also been developing. Claude Monet, a French painter and a key figure in the Impressionist movement, was once laughed by critics for his unique style. His unique way of painting completely turned away from the popular style of realism at the time, which focused on accurate images. However, Impressionism later became one of the most influential art styles in western history.
Even though Gurstein disagrees, some cultural theorists believe that classics contain universal values. They argue that what makes a classic timeless is its ability to connect with all people, having nothing to do with the time period, which gives it lasting importance even as the world changes. To quote literary critic Charles Augustine Sainte-Beuve, a true classic “is an author who has discovered some moral and clear truth...who has spoken to all in his own unique style”.
“Whether ‘timeless classics’ exist or not, as long as we keep discussing what makes a classic today, it will remain a part of our culture,” the Economist commented. The real threat to classic works is not different viewpoints — it’s silence.
12. What can be inferred about views on greatness in paragraph 2
A.They are often revised.
B.They are widely accepted.
C.They are hardly questioned.
D.They are easily understood.
13. What can be learned about Johann Bach from paragraph 3
A.His style was behind his time.
B.His music was simple and classical.
C.His influence was gone with his death.
D.His work was rediscovered in later years.
14. Why does the author mention Claude Monet and Impressionism
A.To highlight how art changes.
B.To suggest realism is outdated.
C.To compare Impressionism with classical art.
D.To show how Impressionism shaped western art.
15. What is considered the real threat to classic works
A.The rise of new art forms.
B.A variety of opinions.
C.A lack of discussion.
D.The influence of critics’ ideas.

Emma had always been a shy girl, the kind who would sit quietly in the back row and pray the teacher never called her name. She hated speaking in front of people and would avoid attention at all costs. Her best friend, Mia, was the complete opposite — outgoing, confident, and never afraid to express herself, whether it was debating in class or singing loudly in the hallway.
One day, the school announced a public speaking competition. The winner would receive a golden trophy and a chance to represent the school at the city level. To everyone’s surprise, Mia secretly signed Emma up for the competition.
“You need to step out of your comfort zone, Emma!” Mia said excitedly, her eyes sparkling with encouragement.
Emma was absolutely terrified. “I can’t do this, Mia! I’ll forget everything on stage. Everyone will laugh at me. I’ll make a total fool of myself,” she whispered, almost in tears.
But Mia wouldn’t take no for an answer.
Every day after school, she dragged Emma to the empty music room and made her practice — from choosing a meaningful topic to working on eye contact and voice control. Mia even recorded Emma’s speeches and played them back so she could improve. Emma slowly grew better, pronouncing each word more clearly and gesturing more naturally, though the deep fear never completely left her.
Finally, the competition day arrived. As Emma stood backstage behind the heavy red curtains, her heart was pounding wildly. She peeked at the crowded hall full of students and teachers, and her legs began to shake uncontrollably. Then she heard the host announce clearly, “Next up: Emma.”
She walked onto the stage, but as soon as she saw hundreds of eyes staring at her, her mind went completely blank — not a single word remained.
Paragraph 1: At that moment, she saw Mia, holding a small sign: “You’ve practiced this a hundred times. I believe in you.”

At that moment, she saw Mia, holding a small sign: “You’ve practiced this a hundred times. I believe in you.” The warm words cleared her blank mind at once. All the daily practice scenes rushed into her head. She took a deep breath, calmed her shaking body and began her speech slowly. Her voice became steady as she went on, sharing her true thoughts bravely. The whole hall stayed quiet and listened carefully to her words.
After the competition, Emma walked off the stage with tears in her eyes — but this time, they were tears of joy. She didn’t win the prize, yet she beat her biggest enemy, her fear of public speaking. Mia ran to her and gave her a big warm hug. Emma realized that true courage was not having no fear, but daring to try despite fear. Thanks to her best friend, she finally stepped out of her comfort zone and grew into a braver girl.
