When I started school, my hands kept shaking. I went to a doctor and was told that I had a nervous system disorder that can cause a person’s hands to shake. I had no idea what I was going to do. One day, I saw a woodcock outside my apartment window, and I had never seen anything like it. So I read about the bird online and took an ornithology class. The professor asked me if I was doing research. I had no idea that undergraduates could even do anything like that. That professor became my undergraduate advisor, and I started working in her lab. She was also my PhD advisor. I stayed in her lab for 11 years.
Now I have a paper coming out soon that looks at the global diversity of parrots. One figure in it is, I think, the best thing I’ve ever done. It shows the family tree of parrots, over a picture of Gondwana breaking up. Gondwana is the supercontinent that South America, Africa, Australia and New Zealand all used to be part of. As that broke up into the continents that we know better now, some families of parrots parted.
My biggest failure in science thus far is my inability to explain how the Carolina parakeet went extinct. I’ve been working on this for seven years. I’ve read lots of historical books and travel diaries. And I never figured it out.
That’s the thing about science. Most of the time, you start out with a really clear idea of what you think is going to happen. And it almost never happens that way. I’ve got a lot out of this research. I’ve learned a lot about the species. But there are just some things that we’ll never know. Finally, I have to accept that maybe I’ll figure it out one day, maybe I won’t. But that’s OK.

Known by the Nazis as the “White Mouse”, Nancy Wake is Australia’s most celebrated World War II resistance fighter.
Hearing the name the “White Mouse”, most people would imagine that Nancy was mild, and shy, but nothing could be further from the truth. Nancy Wake was a brave and fearless woman who took part in dangerous tasks to save the lives of Allied servicemen and war refugees.
As a journalist living in France, Nancy witnessed firsthand the cruelty of the Nazis and made up her mind to fight it any way she could. When the war started, Nancy helped hundreds of people escape to neutral ( 中立的) Spain. Placed on top of the Gestapo’s most-wanted list, Nancy was referred to as the “White Mouse” because of the way she slipped (溜走) through their fingers and avoided detection.
Nancy was sent to England in 1943 to join the British Special Operations Executive (SOE). She was trained in parachuting and surveillance (监视), throwing herself into these activities with strength and determination. She was later parachuted into France, where she helped organise and lead resistance fighters. On one memorable occasion she walked and cycled 500km through several German checkpoints to find a radio operator. She believed that being female allowed her to pass through checkpoints that no one else could get through.
Nancy received medals from Allied countries. The medals are displayed in the World War II gallery at the Australian War Memorial, and form a fitting tribute to this fearless woman, who passed away in 2011.
Perhaps the best words to underline Nancy Wake’s spirit came from her own lips: “I hate wars and violence. But if they come, I don’t see why we women should just wave our men a proud goodbye and then make them shoes, socks and gloves.”

With advances in robotics and artificial intelligence continuing to surprise us, there probably is not a single industry being left untouched by these technologies. Though some believe that robots are dangerous for our society and could gradually make humans obsolete, the reality is far less dramatic. Today, tech companies are developing smart robots suitable for a variety of services. One such innovation comes from the French robot developer, Hease Robotics.
The company’s robotic solution, called Heasy, can be used in shopping centres, train stations, or airports. This autonomous robot is designed to greet, inform and guide customers. Thanks to its smart AI algorithms (算法), the robot will navigate (穿行) safely through crowded environments without bumping into people or objects. The machine is battery-operated and can run for eight hours on a single charge. 85% of people who interacted with Heasy said they were satisfied with the service provided by the robot.
The age of human-robot coexistence has come, and this doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. There are many ways we can turn this to our advantage. Take home robots, for example. The U.S. robotics firm Anki has created a robot called Vector to add fun to our daily routines. Vector is a small, autonomous companion equipped with a camera and machine learning tech. The robot won’t sweep your floors or take out the garbage. It will, however, serve as an adorable (讨人喜爱的) addition to your household.
If you’ve always wanted to have a pet, but weren’t allowed to own any, then Vector might be the right solution. When you call the robot, Vector will activate and turn to you, carefully listening for commands. You can simply ask for a weather forecast and the robot will respond in a second. And in case you forget to charge it, the robot will go to its charging dock by itself.
Both AI and robotics have come a long way. Robots are becoming smarter, and while people still have mixed feelings about this technology, the truth is that we can’t go back. Instead of fearing these innovations, we should accept them — after all, there isn’t much we can do to prevent the ongoing advancement of technology.

Tired of standing in line Wait a bit longer, and you may never have to again. Everyone from Amazon to Silicon Valley start-ups is trying to eliminate lines in retail (零售) stores.
Amazon has opened 24 of its Amazon Go stores, which use cameras and artificial intelligence (AI) to see what you’ve taken off shelves and charge you as you walk out. Some start-ups are closely copying Amazon’s approach to using AI-powered cameras fixed in ceilings. But others are trying an entirely different way to skip the checkout: smart shopping carts. These companies have added cameras and sensors (传感器) to the carts, and are using AI to tell what you’ve placed in them. A built-in scale weighs items, in case you have to pay by the pound for an item. Customers pay by using a credit card, or through an online payment system. When customers exit the store, a green light on the shopping cart indicates that their orders are complete, and they’re charged.
The start-ups behind the smart shopping carts, including Caper and Veeve, say it’s much easier to add technology to the shopping cart than to an entire store. Amazon Go stores rely on hundreds of cameras in the ceiling. The shelves also include sensors to tell when an item is removed. Ahmed Beshry, cofounder of Caper, believes the technology to run Amazon Go is too expensive to use in a large grocery store. Neither Caper nor Veeve has said how much their smart shopping carts will cost, making it difficult to compare the different formats. Shariq Siddiqui, CEO of Veeve, said he’s finding increased interest from retailers given Amazon’s steady expansion of Amazon Go since the first Amazon Go store opened in Seattle in 2018. “We’re always happy when Amazon is doing something,” Siddiqui said. “They force retailers to get out of their old-school thinking.”
Each time a business uses artificial intelligence and cameras, it raises questions about customer privacy and the impact on jobs. Beshry notes that the cameras in his smart shopping cart point down into the cart, so only customers’ hands and part of their arms will be captured (拍摄) by cameras.
