Making the Impossible Possible
What we love about football is that anyone stands a chance against anyone. And the man everyone is talking about now is a 40-year-old “brick wall” named Vozinha.
After Cape Verde held Spain to a goalless draw (平局) at this year’s World Cup, many fans jokingly called Vozinha “the strictest father of Spanish forwards”. This is because every Spanish shot seemed to end with him saying, “No.”
Cape Verde’s defence looked like a brick wall. Spanish players became frustrated, Spanish fans were left speechless, and Vozinha’s popularity grew overnight. His social media following rose from around 50,000 to ten million. What makes this even funnier is that his country, Cape Verde, only has a population of around 550,000 people. It was also Cape Verde’s first-ever World Cup match.
Cape Verde booked its place at the World Cup at its National Stadium, which was built with Chinese pleted in 2013, the 15,000-seat stadium was the country’s first international-standard sports facility. José Maria Neves, then prime minister (总理) of Cape Verde, once described it as “a dream made possible by China”.
In its capital, Praia, fans gathered to celebrate the unexpected draw against Spain, the 2010 champion and one of the favorites to win this year’s tournament.
Fans have compared Vozinha to an octopus (章鱼) with a thousand hands, a superhero, or simply “The Wall”. On Chinese social media, there is even a pun (双关语) based on the Chinese name of Cape Verde (Fódejiao,佛得角). Fans play on the first character fó (Buddha) and call Vozinha Fó Tiào Qiáng (佛跳墙), the name of a famous Chinese dish, Buddha Jumps Over the Wall. The joke suggests that whenever Vozinha jumps, he turns into a wall himself. This is a fitting description for a goalkeeper who went all out not to let anything past him.
Stories like Vozinha’s make the impossible possible. And the Cape Verde goalkeeper was not alone in his heroic display. His two centre-backs (中后卫) were outstanding and also had the game of their lives.
What’s more, Cape Verde only committed one foul (犯规) in the entire game-the fewest in a match from any World Cup team on record since 1966. They went about it diligently. No time-wasting, no cheap tricks. Just heart. “This means everything to our country,” said Cape Verde coach Pedro Brito.

In April 2026, some of the world’s most powerful technology companies made a striking announcement: they are now using artificial intelligence — AI — to help build and improve AI panies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind have quietly set a new goal: to create AI systems that can do their own research and automate (使自动化) the process of scientific discovery.
Anthropic, the company behind the popular AI assistant Claude, recently revealed that its AI now writes up to 90 percent of the company’s own code — the instructions that tell computers what to do. Meanwhile, OpenAI, one of the world’s leading AI labs, has announced plans to launch an “AI research intern (实习生)” within six months. This intern would be able to independently handle a small number of specific research problems — without any help from a human.
The idea of AI improving itself is not new, but the speed at which it is now happening has surprised many experts. Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI’s chief scientist, told MIT Technology Review that he believes we are approaching a point where AI models could work “indefinitely” — meaning continuously — on complex tasks, much like a human researcher. “We will have an era where there are entire research labs inside data centers,” he said.
However, this exciting vision also raises serious concerns. Experts warn that self-improving AI systems could become difficult to control. If an AI makes errors in one step of a long chain of tasks, those mistakes could build up — a problem known as “error accumulation”. A more alarming worry is that such systems could be used to design dangerous tools, including biological weapons or cyberattacks (网络攻击).
Despite the risks, many in the tech industry remain optimistic. They argue that self-improving AI could speed up progress in science and medicine, helping researchers find cures for diseases faster than ever before. The question is not whether this technology will arrive — but whether humanity will be prepared when it does.
