Grosvenor Park, Chester
Every summer, Storyhouse theatre packs up their items and builds an entire amphitheatre (圆形剧场) in Grosvenor Park. This year’s programme sees three diverse performances: The Gangs of New York, The Importance of Being Earnest and The Wizard of Oz. Built into a cliff face in Porthcurno, you hardly need an excuse to visit this theatre. Seeing anything at all, backgrounded by the sky-blue Cornish sea, will be an unforgettable experience. This year sees touring productions of Little Shop of Horrors, and the less-known works of Shakespeare.
Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Highland Perthshire
Throughout most of the year, the Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s indoor concert hall and studio serve as their regular performance spaces. But this summer, you can see equally splendid productions at the amphitheatre located in the woods and overlooking Ben-Y-Vrackie mountain. This year they’ll be staging Dido and Aeneas.
Shakespeare in the Squares, London

11-year-old Canadian Kiké Dueck has always loved nature. From studying bird books as a young child to identifying mushrooms and native plants, her connection to the earth runs deep.
But at nine, reading about climate change caused the first feelings of anxiety. “Painfully, I couldn’t understand why people acted like everything was normal when the planet was in trouble,” Kiké said. Like many young people, she felt flooded by fears of droughts, wildfires, and a changing world — emotions known as climate anxiety. A Canadian study found over half of kids feel afraid or powerless about the environment, with 37% saying these feelings affect their daily lives.
For Kiké, there are days when she loses her motivation to care about day-to-day basics like getting dressed and going to school or being enthusiastic about the sports she’s involved in. “I feel bad because I’m not feeling like I’m doing enough or something like that. But then I eventually feel better and then I feel like I’m not doing enough again and I’ll just cycle on and on,” she says.
Thankfully, Kiké’s parents, Dennie Fornwald and Kris Dueck, turned this worry into a chance for growth. They sought ways to help Kiké channel her passion into positive action. “We wanted her to feel empowered, not helpless,” Fornwald said. They connected with EnviroCollective, a local climate advocacy group. Through the organization, Kiké joined meaningful projects, such as partnering with groups like Better Bus Youth to advocate for greener transportation. Kiké has also become involved with the Cathedral Forest Project, planting an urban forest in a park not far from the family’s house.
While both parents said they’d always cared about the environment, Kris said that Kiké, only 11, had pushed them to be more accountable. They are mindful of driving less and biking to work. Their recycling system is highly organized, redirecting nearly all of their waste for recycling and composting (堆肥).

You may have heard that kale (羽衣甘蓝) is the “queen of greens”, loaded with important nutrients like calcium, iron, and vitamins A, C, and K. It is also a rich source of carotenoids — plant-based compounds that act as antioxidants (抗氧化剂) to support eye and skin health. However, getting the benefits of this super food is not as simple as eating it plain. According to a study published in Food Nutrition, the way you prepare this leafy green determines how well its nutrients are absorbed.
The study investigated the impact of various cooking strategies by using a simulated model of the human digestive system. Researchers compared the absorption of nutrients when kale was eaten alone versus when it was dressed with a simple mixture of olive oil and water. The results were clear: nutrients are much better absorbed when kale is paired with fat, whether the vegetable is raw or cooked.
“Kale contains many fat-dependent nutrients,” explains study coauthor Ruojie Vanessa Zhang. “They do not dissolve well in the watery stomach environment when kale is eaten alone.” When olive oil is added, it forms tiny particles called “mixed micelles” during digestion. These particles act like tiny vehicles, carrying carotenoids across the gut wall (肠壁). Without these fat droplets, the nutrients remain trapped, leading to limited absorption.
To unlock these “trapped” nutrients, preparation is key. David Julian McClements, a professor of food science, suggests “massaging” kale with olive oil. This process helps break down cell walls, leading to what experts call a “jail break” for nutrients. While olive oil is a popular choice, other healthy fats like avocado, nuts, or canola oil can also do the trick.
Ultimately, the best way to eat kale is the way you enjoy it most. Whether you stir-fry it, or blend it into a soup, remember the golden rule: kale needs a little fat to shine.

In Guangdong province, hundreds of offshore wind turbines (风力涡轮机) have been installed in the South China Sea to generate renewable energy. However, these turbines face a major threat: typhoons, which frequently strike China’s coast.
According to Zhu Ronghua, director of the Yangjiang Offshore Wind Energy Laboratory, coastal regions that experience typhoons also possess the best offshore wind resources. The challenge is to build turbines that can not only resist typhoons but also tap into their energy.
During a typhoon, turbines are under extreme pressure. Blades may break because the speed and direction of the wind often change suddenly and dramatically. Its tower can bend or collapse, and its foundation — which also has to take the pressure from waves and currents — is at risk of becoming deformed or overturning. Rain and lightning strikes can damage turbines, too.
While both on-land and offshore turbines in typhoon areas need to be typhoon-resistant, this feature is more critical offshore because typhoons are much stronger at sea. Chinese companies have adopted multiple strategies to enhance turbine resilience, including advanced materials, improved weather forecasting, and upgraded control systems, according to Han Yujia from Global Energy Monitor.
A notable example is Ocean X, manufactured by Mingyang Smart Energy Group. Its floating foundation holds two turbines with oppositely spinning blades to boost energy output. The platform is fixed to the seabed at a single point, so it can side with the wind to lower load, and its foundation is made of ultra-high performance concrete which is four times stronger than ordinary concrete.
In September 2024, Ocean X was installed off Yangjiang’s coast, weeks before Super Typhoon Yagi arrived. Despite wind speeds reaching 133 km/h, the turbines survived and generated 2.1 GWh of electricity in nine hours. Goldwind, another Chinese manufacturer, has achieved similar success through innovations like carbon fiber materials and real-time monitoring systems.
In the next decade, China is expected to add 170 GW of new offshore wind capacity, about 60% in typhoon regions. With the expansion of offshore wind energy, engineering challenges also increase.
