The Silk Road is an ancient network of trade routes that connected China with the rest of the world. It started more than 2,000 years ago during the Han Dynasty. At first, it was used to transport silk from China to Europe, so people called it the Silk Road.
But the Silk Road was not just for silk. Traders also carried many other things, like tea, spices, and porcelain. Besides goods, ideas and cultures were also passed along the route. For example, Buddhism came to China from India through the Silk Road.
Today, the Silk Road is still important. Many countries are working together to build the “Belt and Road Initiative” to improve trade and communication between different countries. Travelers can still visit many ancient sites along the old Silk Road, like the Terracotta Army in Xi’an and the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang.
