Kenyon Scudder once told me a story about his friend, Michael. Michael happened to be on a train sitting next to a young man who seemed worried. Finally the young man told the friend that he was a convict returning home from a prison far away. What he did had brought shame on his family, and they had neither visited him nor written to him. He hoped, however, that this was only because they were too poor to travel and too busy to write.
When he was set free he had written to tell them he wanted to go home. To make matters easy for them, however, he had asked them to put up a signal for him when the train passed their little farm. If the family had forgiven him, they were to put up a white ribbon in the big apple tree near the railway. If they didn’t want him back, they were to do nothing, and he would stay on the train, and go far away.
As the train neared his hometown his suspense became so great that he was afraid to look out of the window. He asked Michael to watch for the big apple tree. They changed seats. In a minute, Michael put his hand on the young convict’s shoulder. “There it is,” he said, his eyes filled with sudden tears. “It’s all right. The whole tree is white with ribbons.”

No matter how often it’s repeated, let’s all face it — we naturally are quite likely to mirror (反映) the behaviour of those in our surroundings. While it’s neither a good nor bad habit, I believe we should think about how much we let others impact us. Why Because we’re independent people and we can choose our own way.
Jim Rohn, a public speaker, said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” This means our close circle of peers (同龄人) can be seen as parts of ourselves. That’s why I often find it difficult, even now, to go against my family’s or friends’ opinions, because they’re the people I care for most and don’t want to disappoint.
When I was around nine years old, I went to a summer camp where I met lots of other kids. At dinnertime, we’d all gather around in the restaurant. At some point, my group of friends and I decided to have a competition to see “who could drink the most glasses of water.” Little me, very competitive and careless, drank 14 glasses of water in 20 minutes. Obviously, I was encouraged by my friends, who were cheering me on. As the night went on, I was rushed to the hospital.
It’s the feeling of belonging to a group that’s tricky (难以对付的). One truth I know for sure now is real friends will always respect your choices. If you’ve thought through it and don’t want to do something, you shouldn’t do it. Your true friends shouldn’t force you to do anything. You’re the master of your own choices. For example, I’ve often turned down some party invitations because I’ve made my own decisions about what I do and don’t want to do. This can, however, leave a cold impression at first, because you’re not following the decisions of the people you may usually agree with. However, in the end, I realize I’m the one who faces the consequences (后果) of my actions, not my friends.
8. What can we infer from Jim Rohn’s words
A.We should have at least five friends.
B.We’re likely to be average people.
C.We’re easily influenced by people around us.
D.We should spend more time with our friends.
9. What happened to the author in the summer camp
A.Competitive kids made fun of him.
B.He was invited to hold a competition.
C.He was thought highly of by his friends.
D.Drinking too much water put him in danger.
10. What does the author believe now
A.True friends are respectful.
B.True friends are hard to find.
C.It’s necessary to make a good first impression.
D.It’s understandable that improper choices are made.
11. What is the best title for the text
A.Lead your peers
B.Go your own way
C.Keep fighting in life
D.Be a doer than a talker
D
In a study published in Nature Communications, researchers from the University of Zurich told 50 people they’d be receiving about $100. Half of the people were asked to spend that money on themselves, and half were asked to spend it on someone they knew. Before giving out any money, the researchers brought everyone into the lab and asked them to think about a friend they’d like to give a gift to and how much they would spend. They then performed functional MRI scans ( 扫描) to get to know activity in three parts of the brain related to social behavior, generosity, happiness and decision-making.
Their choices — and their brain activity — seemed to depend on how they had promised to spend the money earlier. Those who had promised to spend money on other people tended to make more generous decisions throughout the experiment ( 实验). They also had more interaction between the parts of the brain related to altruism ( 无私) and happiness, and they reported higher levels of happiness after the experiment was over.
Another piece of good news was that planning to give away just a little bit of money had the same effects on happiness as giving away a lot. “At least in our study, the amount spent did not matter,” says lead author Philippe Tobler. “Even little things have a beneficial effect — like bringing coffee to one’s workmates.”
It’s not yet clear how long these warm feelings last after being generous. But studies have shown that older people who are generous tend to have better health, says Tobler, and other research has suggested that spending money on others can be effective at lowering blood pressure. “Moreover, there is a positive connection between helping others and life expectancy (预期寿命) ,” he adds.
Next time you think that the best way to make yourself feel better is to buy yourself a treat, consider that the opposite is likely true. “It is worth giving it a try, even if you think it would not work,” Tobler says. “Repeated practice is probably needed so that giving becomes second nature.”
12. What did the researchers find out about those promising to spend money on other people
A.They were much happier.
B.They had less brain activity.
C.They were slower at making decisions.
D.They experienced higher levels of stress.
13. What does Tobler want to explain by mentioning bringing coffee to workmates
A.It isn’t hard to behave generously.
B.Being generous will pay off in the end.
C.The amount of generosity did not matter.
D.Small acts of generosity can be seen everywhere.
14. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us
A.Ways to show generosity.
B.Health benefits of being generous.
C.Reasons for performing acts of generosity.
D.Influences generous people have on others.
15. What does Tobler suggest people do in the last paragraph
A.Practice giving and make it a habit.
B.Don’t expect anything in return when giving.
C.Don’t believe happiness depends on a good treat.
D.Perform something good even if it may have a bad result.
