Krithik, 17, is a researcher in surgical robotics and the founder of Stembotics, a nonprofit that brings low-cost STEM education to students. In 2024, he won the Congressional App Challenge in New Jersey’s 3rd District.
The competition changed how Krithik sees his work. “I stopped treating my project as a hobby and started treating it as a real product,” he says. “It shifted my mindset from building for myself to building for a community.” He learned to ask who his app was for and why it mattered. That, however, was not the only gain. What he found even more valuable was the community. Connecting with other student developers who used technology to help others gave him a network of like-minded people. Listening to keynote speeches and talking with judges taught him how to tell a powerful story about his work. “That experience has shaped everything I do,” he adds.
His winning project was a brain-controlled wheelchair for people with nerve and muscle disorders. The idea came from his grandfather’s stroke (中风). “I wanted to create a low-cost, accessible solution,” Krithik says. His system uses an EEG headset to read simple commands: forward, left, right, and stop. He also added a quick calibration (校准) process, real-time feedback on brain signals, and an emergency stop. Turning a paper draft into a safe, working wheelchair was a huge challenge, but he succeeded.
Krithik is most proud of his research in surgical robotics. “Knowing I am part of building a future where operations are safer and easier is a huge source of pride,” he says. He is equally proud of Stembotics, which has already brought low-cost STEM learning to over 1,000 students. “Seeing the impact on those kids is a completely different kind of fulfillment,” he says. “It is deeply rewarding to help the next generation of innovators,” he adds.

We teach communication skills at Stanford University. We’re also parents, coaches, and advisors. We’ve been worried about teenagers’ weakening writing and speaking skills for munication skills are important for creating healthy relationships and building a successful career. We worry that teenagers won’t have the enthusiasm to bond with others, and will struggle professionally.
The bright side is that simple measures may help stop and turn around the decline. Take pride in your own thoughts: don’t use AI to replace your original ideas; let bots polish your second draft. Join a community: connect with others in screenless activities like debate and clubs. Get a job: manage a coffee shop’s rush, calm down customer conflicts. Customer service jobs enhance understanding and patience.
For teachers, instead of limiting AI use, they should focus on the intellectual process. Conduct in-class writing and oral exercises that demand logical and well-organized thinking. “Cold calling” students — picking them at random to answer without raising hands — motivates them to form cogent opinions. Parents should model “intentional presence”: silence phones during meals and express in words their thoughts. Without communication, we risk raising a generation unequipped for working together and critical thinking.

Clint Perry, a scientist at Queen Mary University of London, has spent a lot of time studying how bees think. He says studying bees is not very different from studying other animals. “A major difficulty is designing an experiment that will actually test what we want,” he says. “With humans, we can ask them a question and get an answer. But bees don’t know that we want to know what they are thinking. They are just trying to get sugar. Bees like sugar.”
This fact can be very helpful when designing experiments to study bees. In one experiment, Perry gave bees a choice between landing on a spot above a black bar or a spot below it. If they landed above the bar, they would find a delicious sugary drink. If they chose the spot below the black bar, they found a bitter liquid. They also had the option of avoiding the task if they weren’t sure they would succeed. Perry found that bees avoided the test when it was difficult and gave it a try when it was easy. “With their behavior,” says Perry, “the bees were telling us if they ‘did know’ or if they ‘didn’t know’.”
Perry’s research suggests that bees have something called “metacognition” — in other words, knowing what you know and what you don’t know. Only a few other animals, including humans, dolphins, rats, and some monkeys, are thought to have at least some level of metacognition.
Scientists still do not know how bees manage to do so much with their tiny brains. It could be that skills such as simple math take far less actual brainpower than we previously thought. Learning more about how bees’ brains work could help us learn more about how our own brains process information. We may also have to rethink how we view the rest of the insect world.
