Highland Cow Art
Highland cow art has become increasingly popular for its unique combination of rural charm and artistic variety. Artists such as Mark Gemmell, Domonique Brown, and Steven Brown create lively images of these famous Scottish animals through different styles — some realistic, some abstract, and some playful. Their works often show Scotland’s natural scenery and cultural traditions, making each painting a celebration of the region’s beauty. When choosing highland cow art for your home, consider the size and colors of the piece to ensure it fits well with your room. Whether you like detailed realism or striking abstraction, there is a style for everyone, adding special character to any space.
Styles and Techniques
Highland cow art covers a wide range of styles, from lifelike paintings to creative abstract works. Realistic techniques focus on careful details to show the texture (纹理) and personality of the cattle, while abstract methods use bright colors and imaginative shapes to create emotional effects. This variety not only shows the artists’ skill but also meets different personal tastes.
Realistic Painting Approaches
Creating lifelike paintings of highland cows requires excellent skills in layering (分层), blending (混合), and careful brushwork to truly capture their textures and expressions. Photorealism, one approach to realistic art, involves copying the animals with extreme precision, using special brush techniques to produce natural-looking textures and depth. To achieve this level of realism, artists must: first, carefully observe the animal’s body structure, colors, and proportions to ensure accuracy; second, apply multiple layers of paint to capture the complex details of fur and expressions; third, smoothly mix colors to create natural transitions and realistic shading.
21. What should be considered when choosing highland cow art for home decoration
A.The artist’s reputation and fame.
B.The size and colors of the artwork.
C.The historical value of the painting.
D.The emotional effects of abstract styles.
22. What do realistic techniques in highland cow art emphasize
A.The emotional effects of the cattle.
B.The imaginative shapes of the cattle.
C.The texture and personality of the cattle.
D.The bright colors of the cattle.
23. What is the first step in creating a photorealistic painting of highland cows
A.Studying the animal’s body structure closely.
B.Mixing colors smoothly to create natural shading.
C.Applying many layers of paint to capture details.
D.Using special brushes to produce depth and texture.

At 16, Benjamin Davis, a sophomore at Bishop Feehan High School in Massachusetts, has invented a revolutionary desktop system that recycles plastic bottles and 3D printing waste into high-quality 3D printing filament (塑料丝). His groundbreaking work won him first place at the 2025 International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) and the $75,000 Regeneron Young Scientist Award, bringing him widespread recognition and increasing attention from scientific communities around the world.
Benjamin’s inspiration struck when he noticed massive amounts of plastic waste piling up in his school’s art room. As he watched these useless materials being thrown away each day, he felt deeply concerned about the growing environmental damage caused by plastic pollution. Determined to find a practical solution, he began to research ways to change waste into valuable resources. Over 18 months, he worked patiently in his garage, researching, designing, and constructing different models until he finally created a small, and advanced machine.
His device can shred plastic waste, melt it, and form it into smooth and consistent 3D printing filament in a single continuous pared with traditional industrial recycling machines, his design uses 70% less energy and produces materials of higher quality. Schools and creative spaces across the globe have already expressed strong interest in his invention, and several institutions have requested detailed prototypes for further testing.
At first, few were quick to credit someone of his age with the ability to tackle such a complex technical undertaking. Teachers and peers questioned whether his small machine could work steadily and meet real-world standards. However, Benjamin never lost confidence. He tested more than 50 versions, stayed up late making improvements, and carefully recorded each result until his device performed perfectly.
Benjamin now plans to study mechanical engineering at MIT. He hopes his experience will encourage more young people to care about the environment and take practical action to solve real problems.

A terrible flash flood and landslide occurred in Ridi village, Kangding, Sichuan province, China, early on Saturday morning. This disaster caused eight people to lose their lives and nineteen are still missing. The flood and mudslide damaged many houses and made a bridge on the Yakang Expressway fall down.
Four cars with eleven people fell from the bridge when it broke. Sadly, two people died, one was rescued and taken to the hospital, and eight are still missing. In Ridi village, six people were found dead and eleven are still missing.
The leader of Sichuan, Wang Xiaohui, quickly went to the disaster site on Sunday to supervise the rescue efforts. He said that the main goal is to search for and rescue the missing people and to reduce the number of people hurt. He also asked for more help for those affected by the disaster and to make sure they are moved to safe places. He urged for the damaged roads and bridges to be fixed as soon as possible.
Over 1,500 people, 311 machines, and a helicopter are now searching for the missing people. Two weather stations are giving weather updates every hour to help with the rescue work. The government of Sichuan sent five doctors from important hospitals to help treat the injured.
Wang Yunsheng, a professor, said that the disaster was caused by heavy rain and melting snow. The disaster happened in a very steep valley (山谷) near Ridi village. The warm weather made the snow and ice melt quickly, and the rain made the valley fill up and then break, causing the flash flood and landslide. This event reminds us of the power of nature and the need to be prepared for such disasters.

Not every famous singer is as lucky as Rolling Stones lead singer Mick Jagger, who is still active even at age 82. One study suggests that even with the protection of wealth, which is usually linked with a longer life, famous singers can expect to cut almost five years off their life expectancy (寿命).
The study was published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, and built on previous research that had already suggested that famous singers pass away younger. It wanted to look at whether it was fame (名誉) itself or the singers’ lifestyles that were behind this.
The researchers made a list of 324 famous singers who worked between 1950 and 1990. Then they matched those stars with a list of 324 less famous singers by when they were born, where they were from, and if they were part of a band or not.
Nearly 60% of the singers were in bands, while close to 30% were solo (独唱的) singers, and the rest had spent parts of their careers both solo and in bands.
When the big stars were compared to their less famous “twins”, they were found to have a 33% higher death risk. The researchers said this makes stardom about as much a risk to health as occasionally smoking.
The study also found that being part of a band could be protective, giving those singers a 26% lower death risk than solo singers. The researchers suggested that this could be because being part of a band means not having to deal with the pressure of being famous alone.
32. What was the study based on
A.Stars’ albums.
B.Mick Jagger’s story.
C.Previous research.
D.An interview.
33. What did the researchers take into consideration when matching the singers
A.Their health condition.
B.Their birth year.
C.Their educational background.
D.Their eating habits.
34. Which of the following has the closest meaning to “stardom” in paragraph 5
A.Being famous.
B.A disease.
C.Stars in the sky.
D.Smoking.
35. What does the study find
A.Rock music is the most popular.
B.Famous singers live unhealthily.
C.Band members are under a lot of pressure.
D.Well-known solo singers tend to have shorter lives.

The Science of Risk-Seeking
Sometimes we decide that a little unnecessary danger is worth it because when we weigh the risk and the reward, the risk seems worth taking. ___36___ Some of us enjoy activities that would surprise and scare the rest of us. Why Experts say it may have to do with how our brains work
The reason why any of us take any risks at all might have to do with early humans. Risk-takers were better at hunting, fighting, or exploring. ___37___ As the quality of risk-taking was passed from one generation to the next, humans ended up with a sense of adventure and a tolerance for risk.
So why aren’t we all jumping out of airplanes then Well, even 200,000 years ago, too much risk-taking could get one killed. A few daring survived, though, along with a few stay-in-the-cave types. As a result, humans developed a range of character types that still exists today. So maybe you love car racing, or maybe you hate it. ___38___
No matter where you are on the risk-seeking range, scientists say that your willingness to take risks increases during your teenage years. ___39___ To help you do that, your brain increases your hunger for new experiences. New experiences often mean taking some risks, so your brain raises your tolerance for risk as well.
___40___ For the risk-seekers a part of the brain related to pleasure becomes active, while for the rest of us, a part of the brain related to fear becomes active.
As experts continue to study the science of risk-seeking, we’ll continue to hit the mountains, the waves or the shallow end of the pool.
A.It all depends on your character.
B.Those are the risks you should jump to take.
C.Being better at those things meant a greater chance of survival.
D.Thus, these well-equipped people survived because they were the fittest.
E.This is when you start to move away from your family and into the bigger world.
F.However, we are not all using the same reference standard to weigh risks and rewards.
G.New brain research suggests our brains work differently when we face a nervous situation.

The doorbell rang, and I looked up from the couch to see the last group to arrive. It was Cousin Joey, her husband, Finn, and their little daughter, Nova. I hadn’t seen them in a while. My father’s side of the family would have family gatherings every Saturday evening in my Granny’s place, but I hadn’t been attending them recently since it clashed with my part-time job as a barista (咖啡师). Granny also lived quite far away, so usually just my parents and my brother would go. This week, however, I had the day off. So here I was, meeting relatives I hadn’t seen for long.
We were a big family. I had a bunch of cousins at least ten years older than me. A few of them, including Cousin Joey, had children. Little Nova was about four to five, the first great-grandchild and the youngest in the family. The next was me, with a 15-year gap. Having my brother was a blessing. When we were little, all cousins were young adults. Being the only two kids was overwhelming. My outgoing brother shared adults’ attention for me. But for Nova, all eyes were fixed on her.
“Nova, say hello to Great Granny,” Joey pulled her arm. Nova frowned, looked down and stepped back. “Don’t be rude,” Joey insisted. Nova shook her head, hiding behind Joey’s legs. Finn grabbed her arm and pulled her forward. Adults kept urging her to be polite, some harsh and some gentle. Watching this, my palms grew sweaty. Nova looked close to tears, her frown so deep as if it could pinch a fly to death.
After a long struggle, Nova whispered a greeting too quiet to hear. Then she was set free to a bedroom. The adults stayed in the living room. “Nova is just like Kristi, isn’t she ” my mom said. “You two are so shy and stubborn,” Joey added, staring at me. I forced an awkward smile. Mom began talking about how difficult I was as a kid. Seeing Nova brought back my unwanted bitter memories. I truly understood how she felt deep inside.
Seeing that everyone was buried in their warm chat, I quietly walked towards the bedroom.

Just at that moment, Joey came in, about to blame Nova for hiding again.

七、读后续写范文(150词)
Seeing that everyone was buried in their warm chat, I quietly walked towards the bedroom. I found Nova sitting on the bed with red eyes, holding a small doll tightly to comfort herself. I sat beside her softly and told her I used to be extremely shy like her when I was little. I shared how nervous I felt when all adults stared at me and forced me to greet others. I told her shyness was not rudeness and there was no need to blame herself. Gradually, Nova relaxed and chatted with me about her favorite toys.
Just at that moment, Joey came in, about to blame Nova for hiding again. I stopped him at once and explained kids’ shy feelings to him. I said forcing shy children to socialize would only make them more anxious. Joey realized his mistake and apologized to Nova gently. Later, Nova walked out of the room voluntarily and greeted the relatives in a soft voice. This experience made all adults realize we should respect children’s personalities instead of judging them rashly.
