Krystal Sheehan, 23 years old, loves walking dogs, feeding them cream, and cuddling (拥抱,搂抱) with them on her couch. However, she does not keep a dog, as she cannot commit to its daily care. Instead, nearly every week, she borrows a dog from a local animal shelter through a program called Shelter Skip Day, run by the Brandywine Valley SPCA. This service lets people take shelter dogs out for a few hours without making a lifelong commitment. It is one of many similar programs spreading across the United States. Psychologist Kerri Rodriguez explains that just five or ten minutes with a dog can lift people’s moods and lower stress. When humans and dogs interact, levels of oxytocin — often called the “love hormone” — rise in both. The unconditional love dogs offer, she says, can be deeply therapeutic (有疗愈作用的).
Most shelters provide volunteers with leashes (拴狗链), waste bags, treats, toys, and water bowls. New York City’s shelter program, called BoroughBreak, even uses bingo cards with fun activities and offers small rewards for participants. These outings also help crowded shelters: dogs who spend time in public, wearing “Adopt Me” vests, become more visible and more likely to find permanent homes.
Krystal first joined Shelter Skip Day after seeing a post on Facebook. Growing up, she had a dog named Angel, and she missed having a canine (犬的) companion. After spending two hours with a puppy named Jetta, she and her boyfriend Tycho Janssen were bewitched. They have since borrowed dogs nearly 20 times. They follow one simple rule: every dog gets a pup cup of cream. If the dog is energetic, they go hiking or playing at the park. If the dog is calm, they stay home and cuddle. By 4 p.m., they must return the dog to the shelter. Many dogs are so tired that they fall asleep on the ride back. Krystal often sits in the back seat to cuddle them a little longer. Each time she returns a dog, Krystal feels sad. But she knows she does not have to wait long. The following week, she can do it all again — walking, feeding, and loving a new four-legged friend, one short, perfect day at a time.
4. What can we infer from the first two paragraphs
A.The program gets support from well-known psychologists.
B.Most young people fail to look after a pet dog at home.

D.The program creates a win-win situation for humans and dogs.

6. Which of the following best describes Krystal Sheehan based on her actions
A.Loving and considerate.

Researchers at the University of Padua in Italy have traced the origins of one of Venice’s most long-lasting signs: the bronze winged lion that stands on the top of a column in St Mark’s Square. Long believed to be a Venetian creation, the sculpture is determined to come from the Yangzi River basin in China.
The lion systematically reflects Chinese artistic traditions. For example, the position of its paws matches that of ancient Chinese lion guardians, originally fierce protectors of tombs. Researchers propose that Marco Polo may have acquired the sculpture, a gift from the Yuan Dynasty emperor, and later brought it back to Venice. A Chinese burial guardian thus became a silent witness to the vast cultural exchanges.
In China, the lion holds an important symbolic role even though the animals have never lived there in the wild. From palaces to the gates of private homes and even modern banks, pairs of stone lions still stand guard.
Real lions began arriving in China via the Silk Road, sent as foreign offerings from Central Asian states to emperors of the Han Dynasty. By the Tang Dynasty, lions were already features of the cultural imagination. Over the centuries, their style evolved: Tang figures often walk energetically, Song examples soften into playful scenes, while later lions sit low in calm dignity. large and completely still.
The lion’s influence also extended into popular culture. The lion dance combined martial arts, acrobatics (杂技) and drama into a brilliant performance. Performed at public celebrations, the dance represented strength, luck and the driving away of evil spirits. Today, it remains a beloved festive event across China and throughout overseas Chinese communities. From foreign gift animal to sacred guardian, from sculpted icon to dynamic performer, the lion in China reflects a unique blend of folk inspiration and artistic imagination.
In Italy, the bronze lion still gazes over Venice, standing as a reminder of the global networks linking East Asia and Europe long before the modern age, and of how symbols travel, transform and last across civilizations.
8. What is the researchers’ discovery about the bronze lion
A.It originated in China.
B.It was made by Venetians.
C.It stood as Venice’s symbol.
D.It was bought by Marco Polo.
9. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.Lions’ origin and traditional role.
B.Lions’ images and historic significance.
C.Lions’ spread and cultural influence.
D.Lions’ introduction and stylistic evolution.
10. What is the lion dance viewed as today
A.A memorial ceremony.
B.A form of martial arts training.
C.A traditional celebration.
D.An intercultural collaboration.
11. What can we learn from the bronze lion’s existence in Italy
A.Venice served as an ancient trade center.
B.The bronze lion symbolized Venice’s history.
C.Ancient China exported lion statues widely.
D.Cultural exchanges existed earlier than assumed.

American kids ate very odd things in the 19th century. In historical documents of all kinds, from medical studies to diaries to school records, Americans described children as curious eaters who appreciated strong flavors and interesting textures (口感). A group of children in 1830s Boston spent their pocket money on raw oysters (牡蛎).
The more I researched, the clearer it became that American children’s experiences with food in the past were full of pleasure. But today, appreciation of sharp and varied flavors can be hard to find among American kids.
Many adults assume that pickiness is a hard-wired stage and that kids naturally dislike many foods. But mass childhood pickiness is a modern phenomenon created largely by junk food companies that promoted products like sugary cereals (谷物) as food specifically for children, convincing Americans that kids need different, easily likable foods. This created a culture of pickiness that is harming children’s health and taking away pleasures and flavors they enjoyed in the past — all while adding unnecessary anxiety to dinner tables across the country.
Food companies like General Foods and Nestlé poured money into designing products in laboratories to target humans’ natural preferences and make their foods very hard to refuse. By the mid-20th century, thousands of their sweet, salty and crunchy (脆的) foods crowded grocery shelves, and many of them were marketed to children. One 1960 Kraft advertisement featured an otherwise “picky” girl who “never turns up that button nose at mild, golden Velveeta cheese!”
Nowadays, many parents worry about their kids’ processed diets, increasing weight problems, and the stress of picky eating. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Parents can warmly encourage children to eat family foods and avoid offering alternatives. They can also fight against corporate marketing with their own enthusiastic messages about the foods they love to eat.
12. How did the American children in the 19th century differ from those at present
A.They were given less pocket money.
B.They enjoyed more diverse flavors.
C.They showed more interest in history.
D.They had fewer conflicts with parents.
13. What does the author think of childhood pickiness
A.An unnecessary risk.
B.A cultural phenomenon.
C.An unavoidable stage.
D.A product of education.
14. What can be inferred from paragraph 4
A.Food companies achieved big success.
B.People tended to buy slightly processed foods.
C.Food advertisements got less creative.
D.People preferred sweet foods to salty ones.
15. In what way does the author try to relieve parents’ anxiety
A.By praising their efforts.
B.By giving possible explanations.
C.By defending their choices.
D.By offering practical suggestions.

When Mum told me to stay with Grandpa for a couple of hours, I was extremely unwilling deep down. “He doesn’t like me,” I said. “Oh, of course he likes you. He’s just sad since Grandma passed away,” Mum replied. We drove straight to Grandpa’s in an uncomfortable silence.
After dropping me off at Grandpa’s apartment, Mum headed to her appointment, promising to come to pick me up soon. Spotting me, Grandpa motioned for me to sit. We glanced up at each other now and then but didn’t say anything. “Want to watch television ” he asked. I nodded. But nothing was on. Two minutes later, he turned the TV off. We sat there, Grandpa patting his legs restlessly, and me trying to find a comfortable position on his old, soft couch.
Suddenly, I felt something hard on the floor beneath the couch. I reached down and pulled it out. It was a wooden box with fancy designs carved into the sides. “Chess ” I said, surprised. “Yeah, I used to play. Do you play ” Grandpa asked. “Never,” I answered. Grandpa fell quiet for a moment, staring at the window and still tapping his legs. Then he suggested that since we had time, he could teach me how to play. I agreed casually.
Grandpa opened the box, a smell of wood polish rising from inside. He taught me about all the pieces and showed me how they moved: the king could move one square in any direction, and the game was won by trapping him; pawns (兵) moved straight forward; knights (马) moved in an L-shape and could leap over other pieces... I was amazed at how patient he was.
We practiced a bunch of times. He just corrected me and had me try again. Finally, when he was satisfied that I knew what to do with all the pieces, he said we were ready to play for real.
Our first game began and I played with full attention.

Our first game began and I played with full attention. At first, I made many stupid mistakes, but Grandpa never blamed me. Instead, he gently reminded me of the rules and gave me useful tips. Gradually, I mastered the skills and even almost trapped his king once. We chatted happily while playing, talking about Grandma’s funny stories and my school life. The awkward silence between us completely disappeared.
We were really enjoying ourselves when Mum returned. I didn’t want to leave at once. Before I went home, I promised Grandpa I would visit him every weekend to play chess together. Grandpa’s eyes lit up with joy. On the way home, I realized Grandpa was just lonely, and small company could warm his heart greatly.
