At dawn one April day, the top of the Huangshan Mountain was a world floating in a sea of clouds and pine trees as French photographer Nicolas Cornet quickly took photos of the breathtaking scene. This was Cornet’s eighth time at Huangshan Mountain in Anhui Province.
The Frenchman’s fascination with Huangshan Mountain began about a decade ago when he came across photos of the mountain by a Canadian photographer. He was immediately drawn by the mountain’s “mysterious landscape” and started planning his own trip there. In 2016, Cornet made his first visit to Huangshan Mountain. The moment he set eyes on the unusual pine trees (松树) and rock formations, and endless sea of clouds, he was fascinated.
That first encounter drew him back to Huangshan Mountain seven more times over the following nine years. For Cornet, the mountain never lost its charm as each season and each change in weather revealed a fresh landscape.
Cornet’s visits eventually paid off with a black-and-white photo series about the mountain posted on his photography website. In February this year, Cornet’s photographs were exhibited at the Xposure International Photography Festival in the United Arab Emirates. He says that while many visitors had never heard of the mountain before, some began planning trips after seeing his photos.
The photographer says Huangshan Mountain has offered him far more than amazing images; it has opened a window to Chinese hospitality (好客). He says that as Huangshan Mountain continues to gain international recognition, services have been improving to accommodate the growing number of overseas visitors. He also praises China’s visa-free entry policy (政策), which made his two most recent trips to Huangshan Mountain much easier.
He has already planned his next trip to Huangshan Mountain. With a new cable way set to open, he says he looks forward to exploring and photographing parts of the mountain that were previously less accessible. “It will open up new creative opportunities for me.”

Zero or light soft drinks contain no or less sugar, so it naturally seems reasonable for people to think that, in addition to your health, this is also a better choice for your teeth, and thus they are becoming widely accepted. But is this actually the case
Zero or light soft drinks contain little sugar, but they are not necessarily safer for your teeth. Experts stress that although these soft drinks do not have sugar that causes tooth damage, they often contain acids (酸) that can attack the surface of your teeth. The acidity in these drinks can cause similar damage to sugar-sweetened soft drinks. Although changing to zero or light soft drinks reduces sugar intake, it does not eliminate its risk to your teeth.
Acid erosion (腐蚀) is the wearing down of tooth surface by the action of acids, and soft drinks speed up this process. As tooth surface can no longer recover, it becomes thinner and weaker. Over time, this can lead to sensitivity, colour change and, in extreme cases, exposed tooth nerves. For example, the pH level in your mouth drops after drinking a can of soft drink due to its high acidity. Low pH promotes demineralization (脱矿) of your tooth surface, which means that necessary minerals are pulled out of the surface, making your teeth weaker to damage.
While zero or light soft drinks contain no sugar and cause fewer holes of the teeth, they are still harmful to your teeth. Therefore, it is wise not to have them too much. Also, to limit damage to your teeth, you can clean your mouth with water after drinking to wash away acids, but wait at least 30 minutes before brushing — doing it right away can actually further damage your tooth surface. Use a straw (吸管) to limit direct contact of the drink with your teeth. The tips also apply when drinking regular sodas with sugar.

Chimpanzees (黑猩猩)live in big, social societies and their main way to communicate is through making sounds and gestures such as raising their arms and touching their mouths. Researchers have also found chimpanzees drum (连续敲击)on the roots of trees in the wild, which can be heard kilometers away, but whether this was a form of communication was unclear.
To better understand how chimpanzees use drumming, Catherine Hobaiter, a scientist at the University of St Andrews, and her team looked at two species — eastern chimpanzees living in East Africa and western chimpanzees in West Africa. They found that western chimpanzees drum with regular rhythms (节律)like the ticking of a clock while eastern chimpanzees’ drumming changes between short and long silences after each hit.
The scientists think these differences could be a result of the fact that eastern chimpanzees live in big groups and tend to be more competitive with their neighbors, and western chimpanzees live in smaller groups with members living in an equal way.
In a second study, Marc Naguib, a biologist at Wageningen University & Research, and his team focused on another unusual chimpanzee behavior: using stones to drum on tree trunks (树干). Stone-assisted drumming also differed from regular drumming in some ways: Before throwing stones, chimpanzees were more likely to make sounds and less likely to move their bodies from side to side.
“I think we’re just scratching at the surface,” Hobaiter says. “Drumming is really a rich behavior that’s going to tell us so much more about what it means to be a chimpanzee.”
In any case, the species and cultural differences could help the conservation efforts of chimpanzees’ habitats. In recent years, researchers have pushed to include animal culture in conservation strategy. “You need these diverse populations to maintain the richness of a species,” Naguib says. “But if you lose a culture, like humans, you won’t get it back.”
