When I graduated from college, all my friends were busy looking for high-paying jobs in big cities. I had a job offer, too — a well-paid position at a famous company in Shanghai. But the night before I had to give my answer, I saw a photo in the newspaper. It showed a small school in a village in Kenya, Africa. The children were sitting on the ground, and the walls of the school were falling down. Something in that picture called to me, and I knew what I had to do.
Three months later, I was on a plane to Africa. The first weeks were harder than I had imagined. The heat was unbearable, the food was simple, and the language was difficult. I often felt lonely and wondered if I had made a mistake. But the children at the school changed everything. They had almost nothing, yet they smiled at me every morning with the brightest eyes I had ever seen.
I taught them English, math, and basic computer skills. I helped repair the school walls and even built a small playground with the help of some local workers. Slowly, the school began to look like a real place of learning. More importantly, the children began to believe that they could have a better future.
One afternoon, a girl named Wanjiku asked me, “Teacher, will you come back next year ” I was not sure. I had planned to stay for only six months, and I missed my family in China. But as I looked into her eyes, I knew I could not say no. “Yes,” I said, “I will come back.”
That was five years ago. I have been back to Kenya three times since then. The school has grown — there are now two new classrooms, a small library, and even a sports field. Wanjiku is now in high school, and she wants to be a teacher. I do not know what the future holds for me, but I know one thing: the decision to go to Africa was the best decision of my life.

When you walk through a forest, you may not pay much attention to the small, soft green plants covering the ground. These are mosses, and they are some of the oldest and most important plants on Earth. Scientists believe that mosses first appeared more than 450 million years ago, even before the dinosaurs. Today, they are found on every continent, from the Arctic to the desert.
Mosses are different from most other plants because they do not have true roots, stems, or leaves. They absorb water and nutrients directly through their leaves, and they can survive in places where other plants cannot. This is why you can find mosses growing on rocks, walls, and even on the roofs of old buildings. They are also able to dry out completely and then come back to life when they get water again.
The ecological value of mosses is enormous. They are like sponges — they can absorb up to 20 times their weight in water. This helps prevent floods and soil erosion (侵蚀). In places like the Arctic, mosses form thick layers called peat (泥炭) that store huge amounts of carbon, helping fight climate change. Scientists estimate that peat bogs (沼泽) hold more carbon than all the world’s forests combined.
Mosses are also important in medicine and industry. For hundreds of years, doctors have used Sphagnum moss (泥炭藓) to clean wounds, because it is naturally anti-bacterial. Today, scientists are studying mosses to develop new medicines and to clean up polluted water. Some mosses can even absorb heavy metals from the soil, which means they could be used to clean up old mines.
In a world facing climate change and pollution, these tiny, often-overlooked plants may turn out to be among our most important helpers. The next time you see a patch of moss, remember — it is not just a small green plant. It is a survivor that has been quietly protecting our planet for hundreds of millions of years.

A.They have very long roots.

13. What is the role of peat bogs in fighting climate change
A.They produce oxygen.

C.They reflect sunlight.
D.They cool the air.
14. What does the underlined word “enormous” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Very small.
B.Ordinary.
C.Very large.
D.Unknown.
15. What can some mosses do for polluted environments
A.They can clean wounds.
B.They can absorb heavy metals.

Every year, billions of birds around the world leave their summer homes and fly to warmer places for the winter. Then, after a few months, they fly all the way back. This amazing journey is called migration, and it is one of the greatest wonders of the natural world.
The most amazing thing about bird migration is not the distance they travel, but how they find their way. Some birds, like the Arctic tern (北极燕鸥), fly more than 70,000 kilometers each year — almost twice around the Earth. How do they know where to go Scientists have studied this question for many years, and they have discovered several remarkable ways that birds navigate.
The first is the sun. Many birds use the position of the sun during the day to know which direction is north, south, east, or west. Like a natural compass, the sun helps them stay on course. The second is the stars. At night, some birds look up at the stars and use their patterns to find their way. This is especially true for birds that fly at night.
The third is the Earth’s magnetic field. Birds have a special sense that allows them to “feel” the magnetic lines of the Earth. This is like having a built-in map. Scientists believe that some birds may also use landmarks, such as mountains, rivers, and coastlines, to guide their journey.
Even more interesting, young birds often make their first migration alone, without their parents. Yet they still manage to find the right place. This means that the ability to navigate is not learned — it is built into their bodies. It is one of the many mysteries of nature that scientists are still trying to understand.
16. What is the main idea of the text
A.Birds are the fastest animals in the world.
B.Birds use several amazing ways to navigate during migration.

B.They fly at night only.
C.They find their way without their parents.
D.They travel a longer distance.

“Grandpa, can you teach me how to ride a bike ” asked seven-year-old Tom, looking up at his grandfather with hopeful eyes. It was a warm Saturday afternoon, and they were in the park near Tom’s house.
Grandpa smiled and looked at the small red bike with training wheels. “Of course, Tom. Learning to ride a bike is one of the most important things in life.” He walked with Tom to a flat, quiet path under some big trees. “First, I will hold the bike for you. Just sit on the seat, put your feet on the pedals, and look straight ahead. Don’t look down.”
Tom got on the bike, his small hands tightly holding the handlebars. His heart was beating fast. Grandpa held the back of the seat and started to push. “Pedal! Pedal!” Grandpa shouted. Tom pedaled as fast as he could, but after a few seconds, the bike started to wobble. Tom lost his balance and fell onto the grass.
Tom sat on the ground, holding his knee. There was a small cut, and a single tear ran down his cheek. He looked at the bike as if it were an enemy. “I want to give up,” he whispered.
Paragraph 1:
Grandpa sat down next to Tom on the grass.

Grandpa sat down next to Tom on the grass. He gently checked Tom’s injured knee and wiped his tears softly. Then he told Tom his own childhood story. He once fell many times when learning to ride a bike and even got badly hurt, but he never gave up. “Failure lies in giving up, not in falling down,” Grandpa said patiently. Hearing this, Tom felt ashamed of himself. He cheered up and decided to try again bravely.
Two hours later, Tom was riding his bike all by himself. He rode steadily along the path freely, feeling the warm wind brush his face. He turned around and saw Grandpa smiling and waving at him proudly. Tom realized that nothing is easy to achieve. True courage is never being fearless, but standing up bravely every time you fall. This precious lesson will encourage him all his life.
