Mr. Jesse Barrett was my high school English teacher, who left deep lifelong influence on me. I was a quiet shy teenager back then, too afraid to speak in public and never dared to share my opinions in class discussions. I hid myself in the corner of the classroom every English lesson.
One day, Mr. Barrett assigned a speech task about favorite writers. I prepared carefully at home but still planned to give up presenting on the stage. When it was my turn, I froze and could not say a single word. Just as I was ready to run back to my seat in embarrassment, Mr. Barrett smiled gently and told the whole class to wait patiently. He walked to my side and whispered: “Your draft is wonderful, take your time, I believe you can do it.” His warm encouragement calmed my nerves gradually. I finished my speech slowly, and the whole class cheered for me warmly afterward. After class, Mr. Barrett talked with me patiently. He told me that every voice deserves to be heard, and true confidence comes from bravely showing ourselves instead of staying hidden.
During the following two years, he kept offering me chances to join class speeches and English debates. Step by step, I became outgoing and brave enough to express my ideas freely. Years later, I chose journalism as my major in college, exactly because of the inspiration from Mr. Barrett. A good teacher does not only teach knowledge, but also lights up students’ inner world.

D.He asked the class to laugh at her nervous performance.
26. What did Mr. Barrett teach the author most importantly
A.How to write excellent English speeches quickly.
B.How to get high scores in English examinations.
C.How to make friends with classmates around her.
D.How to build confidence and show herself bravely.

A.She was deeply influenced by Mr. Jesse Barrett.
B.She dreamed of being a news reporter from childhood.
C.Her parents advised her to pick this popular major.

English is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven human beings can speak it. More than half of the world’s books and three quarters of international mails are in English. Of all languages, English has the largest vocabulary — perhaps as many as two million words.
However, let’s face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweetmeats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.
We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes (探讨它的矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them.
And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham If the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meese
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next
English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects (反映) the creativity of human beings. That’s why, when stars are out, they are visible (能看见的); but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this essay, I end it.
28. According to the passage ______.
A.boxing rings should be round
B.pineapples are the apples on the pine tree
C.there should be an egg in an eggplant
D.sweet-meats and sweetbreads are different things
29. Which of the following is the correct plural form (复数形式)
A.Beeth. B.Meese. C.Geese. D.Tooth.
30. Which of the following has the similar meaning
A.Quite a lot and quite a few.
B.Overlook and oversee.
C.A wise man and a wise guy.
D.Hot as hell and cold as hell.
31. Through the many paradoxes in the English language, the writer wants to show that human beings are ______.
A.lazy B.crazy C.clever D.stupid
D
When you think back on your school days, what’s the first thing that comes to mind The school building itself A memorable teacher The friends you made Chances are that the actual lessons of reading, writing, math and science are not at the top of your list, although they do serve as the basic skills of an education.
We may have taken in a lot of information, and know how to access it. But is there something else we should have learned in school
Albert Einstein said, “Education is not the learning of facts but the training of the mind to think.”
Learning how to think is more than just memorizing a list of facts and figures. Learning how to think for yourself includes forming opinions and making decisions based on your own understanding. Be curious and question everything. Re-examine your views and values often and be open to opposing(反对) viewpoints. By using critical thinking skills, you can base your decisions on gathered facts, and know that things can change if new information is presented.
From the wisdom of Ancient Greece come the words, “know thyself.” By understanding your feelings and discovering your strengths and weaknesses, you develop self-awareness. That will help you make decisions and pursue(追逐) goals in your best interest. Philosopher Aristotle said, “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom,” which is the basic quality of having experience, knowledge and good judgment.
Combined with the lessons we learned from a formal education, thinking for yourself allows you to find your place in the world. Once equipped, you can move forward to discover your own destiny(命运).
32. The author introduces the topic of the passage by_____.
A.raising questions.
B.giving examples.
C.making comparisons.
D.listing numbers.
33. Which statement is true
A.Reading, writing, maths and science are not basic skills on education.
B.Education includes the training of the mind to think.
C.Turn a blind eye to all the opposing viewpoints.
D.We should stick to our views and never change them.
34. Why does the author mention Einstein
A.To introduce a famous figure.
B.To support the main idea.
C.To make a conclusion.
D.To show author’s rich knowledge.
35. Judging from the last two paragraphs, what’s the relationship between “knowing yourself” and formal education
A.The two should be combined together.
B.Both are from the wisdom of Ancient Greece.
C.“Knowing yourself “is more important.
D.“Knowing yourself “gives people less wisdom.
