When I was a teenager, I dreamed of escaping my small hometown, Willowbrook, for a place with bright lights and big dreams. The town sat quietly in the valley, surrounded by the same rolling hills I had seen a thousand times. I thought the world there was too small for me.
So at eighteen, I left. I moved to the capital city, where I found a job in a small company and rented a tiny room in an old building. Life in the city was fast and noisy. There were always new faces, new places, and new things to try. I felt like I was finally living.
But city life came with a price. The rent kept rising, the streets were always crowded, and even when I was surrounded by people, I often felt alone. I worked long hours, and on weekends I was too tired to go out. Slowly, the excitement of the city began to fade. I missed the sound of the wind through the trees near my old home.
One autumn, I returned to Willowbrook to attend a friend’s wedding. As I walked down the familiar road, I noticed the old maple tree was still there, its leaves turning golden. A gentle breeze carried the smell of fresh earth, and for the first time in years, I felt truly at peace. I realized that the town had not changed as much as I had feared. New houses had been built, and a small bookstore had opened, but the warmth of the people and the quiet beauty of nature were just as I remembered.
During the wedding, an old neighbor smiled at me and said, “We always knew you would come back. This town has a way of holding on to its people.” I laughed, but her words stayed in my heart. I thought about how I had once been eager to leave, and how the city had given me a career but taken away my sense of belonging.
The next morning, I packed my bags for the city, but something inside me had changed. I no longer thought of Willowbrook as a place to escape from. It had become the place I would always return to, a quiet harbor in a noisy world.

6. How did the author feel on his return to Willowbrook
A.Disappointed by the changes.
B.Surprised by its peaceful beauty.
C.Worried about the old neighbor.
D.Uncertain about his future.
7. What is the author’s main message in the text
A.Big cities offer the best careers.
B.A hometown’s value lasts forever.
C.Small towns cannot keep young people.
D.Friendships fade with time and distance.

What if a robot could feel the warmth of a hand or sense the softness of a feather This idea is no longer just a dream. In laboratories around the world, scientists are developing a remarkable new material called electronic skin, or e-skin. This thin, flexible layer can sense touch, temperature, and even humidity, just like human skin.
Traditional robots rely on rigid sensors (传感器) that are often heavy and easily damaged. E-skin, however, is made of soft, stretchy materials mixed with tiny electronic components. These components can detect changes in pressure, heat, and moisture, and then send the information to a computer. With e-skin, a robot hand can gently hold a raw egg without breaking it, or carefully touch a hot surface and react quickly.
One of the most exciting uses of e-skin is in medical care. Researchers have designed gloves covered with e-skin that can measure a patient’s heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature in real time. Doctors can use these gloves to monitor patients without any bulky equipment. For people with disabilities, e-skin can be used in prosthetic arms (假肢) to give them a sense of touch that they have never had before.
Beyond healthcare, e-skin is also being used in sports and entertainment. Athletes can wear tight suits with e-skin sensors to track their movements and improve their performance. In video games, players can use e-skin controllers to feel the actions in the game, such as the weight of a sword or the heat of a virtual fire.
Of course, there are still challenges. E-skin is expensive to produce, and it can wear out after repeated use. Scientists are working on making it more durable (耐用的) and affordable. “E-skin is like giving machines a sense of feeling,” said Dr. Maria Chen, a leading researcher. “In the future, robots and humans may interact (互动) in ways we can only imagine today.”
8. What is electronic skin mainly used for
A.Making robots look more human.
B.Helping machines sense touch and other changes.
C.Replacing traditional electronic devices.
D.Producing cheaper medical tools.
9. How is e-skin different from traditional robot sensors
A.It is made of metal.
B.It is more rigid and heavy.
C.It is soft and flexible.
D.It works only in dry conditions.
10. What can e-skin gloves do in medical care
A.Perform surgery on patients.
B.Replace the work of doctors.
C.Monitor several health signs at once.
D.Send medicine into the body.
11. What does Dr. Maria Chen think of e-skin
A.It is still far from perfect.
B.It will replace human skin one day.
C.It will change how humans and machines interact.
D.It is too expensive for common use.

Crows are often seen as black, noisy birds that steal food. However, recent research has shown that these clever animals are far more intelligent than we once thought. In a study published last year, scientists discovered that crows can use tools in a planned way, not just by accident.
In the experiment, researchers placed a small piece of meat inside a clear plastic tube that was too narrow for a crow’s beak. To get the food, the crow had to use a stick to push the meat out from the other end. Most of the crows succeeded on their first try, and they became even faster with practice.
Even more surprisingly, when the scientists made the task harder, the crows came up with new solutions on their own. For example, if the stick was too short, some crows used a combination of two short sticks to reach the food. This kind of problem-solving is called “causal reasoning” (因果推理), and it is something that scientists used to believe only humans and a few other animals could do.
What is even more interesting is that crows seem to remember faces. In another study, researchers wore special masks while capturing crows for a scientific test. Years later, they walked around the area wearing the same masks. The crows that had been captured before attacked them, while other crows, which had never been caught, ignored them. This showed that crows can not only recognize human faces but also remember them for a long time.
So next time you see a crow, do not just think of it as a common bird. Behind those dark eyes is a mind that can plan, solve problems, and remember the past. Crows may be small, but they are among the smartest animals on Earth.
12. What did the first experiment show about crows
A.They like eating meat.
B.They can use tools on purpose.
C.They are afraid of plastic tubes.
D.They prefer sticks to other objects.
13. What does “causal reasoning” mean in paragraph 3
A.Solving problems by remembering past events.
B.Understanding cause and effect in a task.
C.Learning from other animals’ behavior.
D.Following the example of scientists.
14. How did the scientists know crows could remember faces
A.Crows attacked people wearing the masks again.
B.Crows flew away from the masked people.
C.Crows copied the researchers’ actions.
D.Crows made special sounds near the masks.
15. What is the best title for the text
A.Crows: The Most Beautiful Birds
B.Why Crows Are Becoming Endangered
C.The Hidden Intelligence of Crows
D.How Crows Communicate with Humans

Many students find it hard to concentrate when studying. They open their books, but their minds soon wander to phones, music, or even the weather outside. In today’s world of constant distraction (干扰), building deep focus has become an important skill for learners. Here are some practical ways to train your mind and study more effectively.
First, create a study space that is free from distractions. ___16___ This small change tells your brain that it is time to work, and it can greatly improve your ability to concentrate.
Second, set clear goals for each study session. ___17___ For example, instead of telling yourself to “study math,” set a goal like “finish ten algebra problems in 30 minutes.” Clear goals make it easier to stay on track and measure your progress.
Third, take regular breaks. ___18___ A popular method is the “25-minute rule”: study for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. This helps your brain rest and keeps you from feeling tired too quickly.
___19___ Many students believe that studying longer means learning better, but in fact, the brain needs time to organize new information. Short, focused study sessions over several days are usually more effective than one long, sleepless night.
Finally, stay healthy. ___20___ A balanced diet, enough sleep, and regular exercise all play an important role in how well your brain works. Remember, a healthy body supports a healthy mind.
A.Try to study in a quiet room with your phone put away.
B.Good study habits also depend on your physical health.
C.Don’t try to learn everything in one long study session.
D.Studying with friends can sometimes help you focus better.
E.Knowing exactly what you want to achieve keeps you motivated.
F.Some students find that listening to music helps them study.
G.Our brains cannot focus for hours without short periods of rest.

The old wooden house at the end of Maple Street had been empty for years. When my family moved in last autumn, I was not happy at all. The walls were full of cracks, the windows creaked in the wind, and the garden was covered with wild grass. I missed our bright apartment in the city.
On my first day at the new school, I kept my head down and hoped no one would notice me. At lunch, I sat alone at a corner table, eating my sandwich in silence. Just then, a girl with a bright smile sat down opposite me. “Hi! I’m Nora. You’re the new girl, right Want to try some of my grandma’s cookies She just baked them this morning.”
I shook my head. “No, thanks.” Nora did not look hurt. She simply put a cookie on my tray and said, “Trust me, you’ll love them. Everyone in town loves Grandma’s cookies.” Then she stood up and left, waving goodbye.
After school, I walked back to the old house, still feeling lonely. Mom was in the garden, trying to pull out the wild grass. Dad was inside, repairing a broken shelf. I picked up a small shovel and started to help quietly. Suddenly, an old woman appeared at the gate. She had a warm face and held a basket of fresh vegetables in her arms. “Hello, dear. 四、演讲稿范文
Good morning, everyone,
Today my topic is “Small steps, big changes”. It means tiny continuous efforts can finally bring amazing results.
Many examples can prove it. If you memorize ten English words every day, you will master thousands of words in a year. If you take short exercise daily, you will become healthier gradually.
I believe we should stick to small positive steps instead of waiting for sudden great success. Progress grows from every little effort we make.
In short, small steps really do lead to big changes. Let’s start today.
Thank you!
五、读后续写范文
Paragraph 1:
Over the following days, Nora’s grandma became a frequent visitor. She brought fresh vegetables, homemade cookies and gardening tools to help us fix the messy garden. Nora often came with her, chatting with me and sharing interesting stories about the town. I slowly opened my heart and played with her after school. We pulled weeds, planted flowers and cleaned the yard together. The loneliness I felt at first faded away little by little.
Paragraph 2:
Months later, our old wooden house had changed into the warmest place on the street. The garden was full of colorful flowers and green plants. Neighbors often dropped by to chat and share delicious food. I no longer missed the city apartment. I realized that true warmth did not come from bright big rooms, but from kind neighbors and small happy moments shared together. I was glad my family moved here.
