Liu Cixin, 57, is China’s most famous science fiction writer. His great work has earned the praise of Barack Obama and Mark Zuckerberg. He says that he writes science fiction because he enjoys imagining a world beyond the “narrow” one we live in. “For me, the essence of science fiction is using my imagination to fill in the gaps of my dreams,” says Liu.
Liu’s strong interest in outer space began in childhood. At first, he hoped to explore it as an astronaut or astronomer, but he settled for reading and writing about it instead. Early exposure to books by Jules Verne, H.G. Wells and Arthur C. Clarke fired Liu’s imagination and motivated him to write.
In 2015, he became the first Asian writer to win the Hugo Award, the most prestigious (有声望的) international science fiction prize. A 2019 adaptation of his short story The Wandering Earth became China’s third highest-grossing film of all time, and a TV version of his bestselling novel The Three-Body Problem has also been released. His latest book, To Hold Up the Sky, a collection of stories, was published in the U.S. in October 2020.
Liu hopes his books give readers a sense of perspective. “Our reality is narrow, confined, and brief,” he says. “Whatever we think is important right now, in our ordinary lives, will no longer be important against a grander sense of time and space.” His goal is to inspire more people to take a moment to look up at the sky and cast their eyes at what’s beyond. In recent years, bubble tea shops and fried-food stands have become ubiquitous in cities across China. These snacks, once occasional treats, are now consumed daily by millions of young people. The boom (繁荣) is partly fueled by aggressive marketing (激进营销) and social media influencers, who make these products look trendy (时髦的) and appealing. However, health experts are sounding the alarm: the excessive intake of sugar, unhealthy fats, and artificial additives is harmful to adolescent health.
A typical cup of bubble tea contains about 30 to 60 grams of sugar, exceeding the daily recommended limit for teenagers, which is no more than 25 grams according to the World Health Organization. Combined with the high calories from deep-fried chicken and potato chips, this diet contributes to a sharp rise in obesity rates. Moreover, frequent consumption of fried foods introduces trans fatty acids, which increase the risk of cardiovascular (心血管的) diseases. Even more troubling is that many teenagers replace regular meals with these snacks, missing out on essential nutrients like protein, fiber, and vitamins.
The problem is not just physical. Studies have shown that a diet high in processed sugars and fats can also affect mental health, leading to mood swings(情绪波动)and decreased concentration in class. Some experts compare this trend to an “epidemic” (盛行) of unhealthy eating habits, which may have long-term consequences including type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. A recent survey revealed that 70% of high school students consume these items weekly, but most are unaware of the calorie counts and health risks.
Fortunately, there are simple steps to reverse the trend. Parents and schools can encourage teenagers to drink plain water or milk instead of bubble tea, and choose baked or grilled foods over fried ones. Small changes, such as eating more fruits and vegetables, can make a big difference. As the saying goes, “You are what you eat.” It is time for young people to think twice before they order that sweet, crispy snack.

Plastic pollution can feel distant — until it shows up in places it shouldn’t, like human blood. Most plastics don’t truly go away. Instead, they break into microplastics that travel through oceans, move up the food chain, and last for decades.
Now, researchers in Japan say they may have a good solution. They have created a plant-based plastic that dissolves (溶解) completely in seawater within hours.
The material is made from cellulose (纤维素), the most common natural polymer (聚合物) on Earth, and is designed for everyday packaging. It remains strong during use but breaks apart safely if it escapes into the ocean. Led by Dr. Takuzo Aida at the RIKEN Center, the work points to a new way of thinking about plastic — one that focuses on how materials actually behave once they leave our hands.
The material stays firm thanks to salt bridges. These connections keep the polymer network strong. When seawater gets inside, it affects the bridges and makes them weaker, so the network falls apart into pieces that dissolve in water.
To keep the plastic from breaking down too soon, the team added a thin coating that slows the entry of water and salts during normal use. Early versions of the plastic were clear and strong but also not soft. To fix that, researchers added a kind of salt. By changing how much of this salt they used, the team could turn the material from hard sheets to more flexible ones.
The key step is that the material breaks apart into separate molecules (分子), which cuts off the usual path to microplastics. The authors describe it as fully recyclable, because the dissolved parts can be collected and recombined to form the same material.
If successfully mass-produced, the material could produce packaging that remains strong in everyday use but breaks down more quickly once it enters seawater. Even so, reducing plastic pollution will still depend on cutting single-use plastics, improving waste collection, and adopting policies that reward cleaner, more recyclable materials.
