Emojis (表情符号) are a fun way to express ourselves while sending messages. But did you know that the same emoji can mean very different things in different cultures This can cause misunderstandings or even trouble if you’re not careful enough. Let’s take a closer look at some emojis and their surprising cultural meanings.
Let’s start with the thumbs-up (竖大拇指) emoji. In many Western countries, people use it widely to show agreement or to praise a job well done. However, in some parts of the Middle East, West Africa and South America, people see it as rude, similar to giving someone the middle finger (手指).
The OK hand sign also has many kinds of cultural meanings. In the US and Europe, it simply means “everything is fine” or “perfect”. However, people in Brazil and Turkey think it is an impolite gesture (手势). Even more interestingly, in France, it stands for “zero” or “nothing”. Clearly, this emoji’s meaning truly changes a lot across different cultures!
The folded hands emoji also carries different meanings. In Western cultures, many people take it as a high-five-a gesture of celebration. But in most Asian cultures, it is a way to express thanks or greet others.
The crossed fingers emoji can also get you into trouble. In the UK, the US and Canada, crossing fingers is a common way to wish someone good luck. However, in Vietnam, you’d better think twice before using the gesture, as it has an unexpected negative meaning there.
Understanding these cultural differences can help avoid misunderstandings when communicating across cultures.
59. Which of the following has the most meanings according to the article
60. What should people avoid doing when meeting someone from Vietnam
A.Using folded hands to say thanks. B.Giving the thumbs-up to praise them.

Traveling to another country is exciting and fun. But if you don’t learn about local traditions, your trip may get into trouble. To help stop things like that, I list some cultural taboos (禁忌) in several countries. Let’s take a look and then you can have a great trip there.
Mexico
In Mexico, bringing an expensive gift to someone’s home is a no-no. It could be seen as a bribe (贿赂). For local people, some simple things like flowers are good gifts. The US
Americans have a tradition of tipping (给小费). You can tip waiters, taxi drivers, hotel doormen… nearly anyone with a service job.
Pay attention when you talk with Americans. Questions like “How old are you ” may be common between friends. But as tourists in the US, it is not polite to ask people’s age.
Britain
British people are known for queuing (排队). From the supermarket to the underground, queues are very common in Britain. Usually, it takes a British person six months of their life in queues. If you jump the queue in Britain, you may make them angry.
Japan
You should never wear shoes indoors in Japan. When visiting someone’s home, it is rude to enter with shoes on. Shoes should be taken off at the door and replaced with indoor slippers (拖鞋). This is also the same when you try clothes on in a clothes shop. You should take off your shoes before going into the fitting room (试衣间). There are indoor shoes prepared for customers inside.

After they woke up the next morning, they played in the shallow, clear water. Then they caught some small fish and cooked these for breakfast.

Suddenly, the boys heard a strange noise in the distance. Soon this sound became louder.
“What is it ” asked Joe.
“It isn’t thunder,” said Huck. “Let’s go and see.”
They hurried to the shore (岸). A little ferry (渡船) full of people was about a kilometer below the village. There were lots of rowing boats moving around near the ferry. Growing up with books
Reading is an important habit that benefits us a lot. It can open up our eyes and enrich our minds. It also helps us gain knowledge, relax ourselves and improve our writing skills.
However, many of us have less time to read books now. Instead of reading, we spend plenty of time watching short videos and playing computer games. These activities are not good for our study and growth.
As students, we should develop a good reading habit. First, we can read different kinds of books, especially Chinese classics. They help us learn more about traditional Chinese culture. Second, we should spend less time on electronic products. Third, we can share good books with our friends and spread the joy of reading.
Books are our best friends. Let’s keep reading and grow up with books every day!
