Transmitting (输送) information from 40,000 kilometers above Earth might sound like the stuff of science fiction, but Chinese scientists have turned it into reality. They’ve successfully maintained a high-speed laser (激光) link with a high-orbit satellite for over three hours.
According to Xinhua, China has launched multiple high-orbit and low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to provide Internet services. High-orbit satellites are typically 36,000 kilometers above Earth, while LEO satellites range from a few hundred kilometers to 2,000 kilometers. Due to their higher altitude (高度), high-orbit satellites can cover larger areas.
However, the high altitude can bring problems. The communication between these satellites and the ground isn’t stable, lasting only minutes. Also, while data travels quickly from satellites, signals from Earth are much slower. “It’s like sending someone 10 messages and getting only one reply,” Liu Chao, a researcher from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told Sichuan Daily. “It’s hard to have an efficient conversation that way.”
To solve these problems, the research team developed a laser communication ground station with a 1.8-meter-wide optical (光学的) telescope in Lijiang, Yunnan province. Acting like a sensitive eye, the station can detect weak signals from over 40,000 kilometers away. Additionally, scientists used a guiding laser to help the satellite and ground station quickly find each other. They also employed precise tracking and real-time corrections to keep the “conversation” stable, reported Sichuan Daily.
The efforts have resulted in a breakthrough. At distances of up to 40,740 kilometers, the ground station and a high-orbit satellite achieved two-way communication in just four seconds. The link, which was as fast as one gigabit (千兆比特) per second, lasted over three hours uninterrupted.
According to Xinhua, this means that high-orbit satellites can not only transmit data quickly but also receive complex instructions in real time. This lays a foundation for upgrading high-orbit satellites from data relay stations into intelligent processing centers in our space network. The experiment also proved the deep-space communication abilities of ground stations. “With this technology, we will be able to communicate with deep space probes (探测器) on the moon, Mars and other locations directly from Earth,” Liu told Sichuan Daily.

M: It was good, actually! Last time, it was raining, which most people would see as negative, but it made the soil softer and planting easier. We planted near some huge, old industrial buildings that I’d never seen before. The planting took forever, which I could’ve done without, but it was really worth it.

M: I do like Justin and Carrie, but Brenda has a better voice than either Justin or Carrie.
W: Did you notice those costumes Brenda wore on stage This was the most surprising part. It must have taken months to create them!
M: All of her costumes looked great! Plus, her dance moves made me feel like dancing myself! I’m going to watch the video and learn some of those dance steps so that I can perform them in our school talent show.
W: Great idea! But you’re going to have to practice a lot.
M: I will. I’m already looking forward to Brenda’s next concert.

【原文】M: Now for some news about a summer holiday activity club called Let’s Do It! So, the first thing. This is a club for children and teenagers between the ages of 10 and 17. So if you’re feeling bored and you’d like to be busier this summer, think about going along. You’ll learn something useful and will make new friends too.
This isn’t a weekend club. It meets every Monday during the holidays. That’s in the afternoon and members will take part in all kinds of fun projects. For example, you may learn to make dishes or write a story in the club. Next week, you’ll learn something about being an engineer because you’ll be put into teams and will be guided to construct a bridge! How exciting!
