Vicky was eating breakfast. Her father came into the kitchen and said, “Mom wants you to clean your room. It looks as if a hurricane passed through it.”
Joe, Vicky’s little brother, asked, “A hurricane Is that a bad thing ”
“Sure it is,” said his father.
“I’ll do it after school, Dad,” said Vicky. “My first class is geography and Mr. Miller hates people to be late.” And off she ran through the front door.
Twenty minutes later, Vicky ran into her classroom.
“Today,” said Mr. Miller, “we’re going to learn about hurricanes. Have any of you seen a hurricane ” Vicky thought about her bedroom, but she said nothing.
“I haven’t seen one. Not a real one but I watched a program on TV and I know they destroy (破坏) things and leave a mess,” said James who sat next to Vicky.

“Hurricanes can be good things ” Vicky asked.
“Oh, yes,” said Mr. Miller. “Hurricanes bring a lot of water to rivers and lakes that are becoming dry. Animals and fish come back to live in them. Hurricanes also pick up heat from the very hot areas of the world and drop it in less warm places.”
“So, hurricanes can be good things,” Vicky said to herself. “I’m going to show Mom the good part.”
When Vicky got home in the afternoon, she began to clean up her bedroom. She put all of her things in their proper places.
“Mom,” she called. “Can you come here for a minute ”
Vicky’s mother put her head around the door.

Mountains are great places to spend your free time, but they can be dangerous if you’re not prepared. Imagine you went hiking with your friends or family and got lost while taking pictures of plants and animals. What if you couldn’t find your way back and had to wait until someone came and saved you To stay alive, you’d need three things: fire, water and shelter (庇护处).
Fire is the most important because mountains get cold at night, even in the summer. Fire also keeps dangerous animals away and can let people know where you are. So you should always carry a lighter or a box of matches with you. If you have neither of these, you can hit a rock to start a fire. Just make sure that the fire doesn’t spread!
Another thing you’ll need is clean drinking water. Humans can’t live without water. If your drinking water runs out, you’ll need to find clean water as soon as possible. It’s best to look for running water, such as a stream (小溪) or river. If you can’t find any, try digging a deep hole to find water underground. Or, if you have any empty bottles, you can use them to collect rainwater.
Finally, you will need some kind of shelter. A large hole in the side of a hill or one that is underground can be a good shelter. If you can’t find one, find a dry area, build a frame (框架) with wood, and cover it with a blanket (毛毯). If you don’t have a blanket, cover your body with some leaves instead. This will keep you dry on the rainiest nights and keep out the wind.
Remember, you should never go into the mountains without the right skills and tools. But if you’re prepared, you’ll have a safe and enjoyable experience.
