The Language Bridge
When Fatima moved to England last September, everything felt unfamiliar. Though she spoke Arabic (阿拉伯语) quite well, her English was limited to a few basic words. In class, she sat quietly by the window, watching the autumn leaves fall. The teacher’s words seemed to flow past her like a river she couldn’t cross.
Emma, who sat beside Fatima, noticed her confused look whenever she opened her textbook. One lunch break, Emma decided to say hello first. She sat next to Fatima, pointed to her sandwich and then herself, saying slowly, “Lunch. I eat lunch.” Fatima’s eyes lit up. She smiled and repeated, “Lunch.” Then she pointed to her own food and said softly, “Al-ghada.” Emma carefully repeated the Arabic word. Their laughter broke the silence between them.
That small conversation built a bridge. Emma always loved languages, so she began meeting Fatima after school. They used picture cards, simple storybooks, and body language to talk. Emma taught Fatima English words, while Fatima shared Arabic expressions. Within two months, Fatima could introduce herself and ask simple questions. Emma could hold short conversations in Arabic, too.
Their friendship went far beyond language lessons. Fatima invited Emma to her home and taught her to make stuffed grape leaves, a traditional Arabic dish, using her grandmother’s recipe (食谱). In return, Emma helped Fatima understand English classroom rules — when to raise a hand and how to work in groups.
By December, something wonderful happened. Fatima stood before the class and gave a presentation about her home country. She spoke slowly but clearly, her voice growing stronger with each sentence. When she finished, the classroom clapped loudly. Emma stood up and said, “Fatima taught me that true help isn’t doing things for someone. It’s walking beside them.”
Their friendship became known as “The Language Bridge”. Other students joined their after-school meetings. Now, a small group gathers every Friday to practise different languages and share stories from their cultures.
“I thought I came here to help Fatima,” Emma told her mother, “But she helped me see the world differently. I gained a new language and learned what friendship truly means.”
24. How did Fatima feel when she first sat in class in England
A. Confused. B. Excited. C. Angry. D. Relaxed.
25. What did Fatima and Emma do together after school
A. They worked on a class project. B. They asked their teacher for help.
C. They joined a school language club. D. They shared languages and cultures.
26. What did Emma learn in the end
A. Learning new languages matters a lot.
B. Being supported by parents is important.
C. Joining a group of people makes us grow.
D. Helping each other brings true friendship.
C
Imagine birds flying freely in the sky. Yet they face a hidden danger in daily life. Every year, thousands of birds die from flying into building windows. Most people pay little attention to this serious problem. In fact, window collisions (碰撞) have become a main killer of birds in cities, towns and villages.
Research showed that most bird accidents happen on buildings below 12 floors all year round, especially in the first three floors of buildings close to trees. Small songbirds (鸣禽) and young birds are the easiest to get hurt.
Scientists have studied this problem for a long time. They found that common window glass is safe for humans but very dangerous for birds. Birds simply cannot see the glass as a wall. They often mistake windows for open space and fly straight into them. In early protection plans, people tried putting large bird-shaped stickers on glass to keep birds away, yet the effect was poor because they failed to consider birds’ special eyesight.
But why do birds think there is empty space to fly through Researchers looked further for the reasons. For one thing, shiny glass reflects (反射) trees and sky. For another, clear glass lets birds see plants inside the building. With these findings in mind, they cooperated with building designers to create simple but useful solutions. They tested two easy ways to put marks on windows. One way was to use reflective bird tape on the outside of the glass. The other way was to draw dot patterns with paint. These marks let birds know the wall is there, without stopping people from seeing outside. After testing for a long time, they found the methods worked well.
Experts hope these simple bird protection ways can be widely used in homes, schools and office buildings. These methods are cheap and easy to apply, making them practical for both new and old buildings. They also wish more villages and towns will use them to protect migrating birds (候鸟) and young inexperienced birds. However, public awareness of this problem is still low. “If we really want to solve the bird collision problem,” an expert says, “we must let more people know that window glass is a hidden danger to birds.”
27. What can we learn from the passage
A. Songbirds can’t tell windows from open space.
B. Low buildings are safe places for young birds.
C. Early protection plans considered birds’ eyesight.
D. Birds are born with the ability to see window glass.
28. What is mentioned in Paragraph 4 about the solutions
A. Researchers alone created marks on the glass.
B. Marks stop people from seeing the outside clearly.
C. Marks can help birds know something is in the way.
D. Building designers add chemicals to make new glass.
29. Which of the following is the best title for this passage
A. The Different Types of City Birds B. How Scientists Study Birds in Cities
C. Saving Birds from a Hidden Danger D. Why Birds Like Flying Near Buildings
D
A growing number of people are facing lasting stress or pressure. A new study shows that this may come from a mismatch between modern life and our natural biology. Human bodies are made for the natural environment, not the busy city life. This means modern city life goes against our biological nature. This finding comes from a new study by two researchers who study human evolution (进化), Colin Shaw and Daniel Longman.
They did a lot of research and the results showed that our bodies cannot keep up with the fast development of technology and environmental changes. Daily lives are filled with triggers (诱因) that make us uneasy, from busy routines (日常安排) to building noise to exams. These triggers work together to keep our bodies stressed and nervous all the time. This state of endless pressure was uncommon in human history. This is causing widespread harm physically and mentally. The researchers argue that it is the stress of modern life that leads to these problems.
Shaw says our bodies react to daily problems in almost the same way as when meeting a dangerous animal. This shows our stress system was built for life in nature long ago. Modern life keeps this ancient system running all the time. Although we no longer face dangerous animals, and we have made great progress in medicine and technology, today we are more stressed and less happy than before.
Many studies have shown that spending time in nature or even just looking at photos of nature can be good for our body and mind. Because of evolution, people still need to be outdoors in nature. And that also gives us some ideas on how to solve stress-related problems. Shaw and Longman want to see more efforts made to help people stay away from busy city life, such as keeping green areas in city environment, protecting the natural landscapes we have left, and offering spaces for people to detach themselves from busy routines.
In short, nature is the perfect shelter (避风港) for modern people under pressure, and we should make it a habit to spend time in natural green areas whenever possible.
30. What can we learn from Shaw’s words in Paragraph 3
A. Our stress system fails to work now.
B. Early humans met more dangers than us.
C. Human stress reactions are always active.
D. Modern problems are as dangerous as animals.
31. According to the passage, how can people probably solve modern stress
A. By developing more medical treatments.
B. By helping people get used to busy city life.
C. By developing technology and making work easier.
D. By keeping green areas and protecting natural landscapes.
32. What does the word “detach” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean
A. Better. B. Control. C. Free. D. Balance.
33. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage
A. To explain the benefits of being close to nature.
B. To encourage people to get in touch with nature.
C. To suggest different ways of dealing with stress in life.
D. To discuss the importance of staying away from stress.

Keeping the 24 Solar Terms Alive in Creative Ways
The 24 Solar Terms are known as the “Fifth Great Invention of China”. They show how ancient people watched seasonal changes and learned to live in harmony with nature. However, many students today have a problem that the 24 Solar Terms may seem far from daily life. For example, few of them can name all the terms or explain their meanings in everyday life.
To encourage students to bring the terms back to teenagers’ lives, a middle school in Nanjing started a cultural project called Solar Terms in Our Daily Life. Mei Lin, a Grade 8 student, decided to try something new with her classmates. Her group connected the 24 Solar Terms culture with a popular youth hobby—watching short videos.
For Grain Rain, Mei’s group made a one-minute short video. They interviewed Mei’s grandpa and learned that Grain Rain is perfect for growing plants and picking spring tea. The video showed spring rain, fresh tea leaves, and students putting seeds into small flower pots. Besides, they added simple lines like “Grain Rain warms the earth and helps all plants grow.” By using real-life pictures and easy sentences, they made the meaning of Grain Rain easy for every student to understand.
Mei’s creative method encouraged more peers to join similar activities. Some students designed daily phone wallpapers and bookmarks with poems about terms. Others wrote songs related to features (特点) of the terms and posted them online to share traditional culture with more people outside school. Up to now, they have got hundreds of likes and comments below their posts.
The school’s project has helped students build a deeper understanding of the 24 Solar Terms. Through it, they have found that the terms are not just old names in books. They are still connected with spring rain, tea leaves, food and family memories. The project also shows that traditional culture can be presented in lively and easy-to-follow ways.
Passing down tradition doesn’t mean keeping it unchanged. When teenagers mix ancient culture with new creative forms, they not only protect our cultural treasure (瑰宝) but also form their own understanding of it. In such a fast-changing society, these small imaginative works help the wisdom of the 24 Solar Terms stay fresh and meaningful for young people.
