Music is an important part of human life. It has existed for thousands of years, even earlier than written language. In ancient times, people used simple sounds and songs to express emotions like happiness or sadness, and to pass on stories to the next generation. Without formal writing, music helped communities keep their traditions alive, making history a living experience for everyone.
Music deeply influences our feelings. Soft music relaxes us when we’re stressed or tired, while cheerful music lifts our spirits when we’re upset. Many students listen to music while resting because it keeps them in a good mood. In hard times, music acts as a gentle companion, offering comfort and an escape from daily pressures.
There are many music genres with unique charms. Pop music is popular among teenagers for its easy lyrics and lively tunes. Classical music, by composers like Mozart and Beethoven, lets people enjoy art. Folk music tells ordinary people’s life and culture, and rock music, full of energy, is loved by young people for its strong rhythm and expressive lyrics. Each type reflects the diverse tastes of music lovers worldwide.
Today, the Internet and mobile phones make it easy to access music anytime, anywhere. Some people also learn to play instruments or sing in bands. Music brings people together too — at concerts or parties, people share joy through music, strengthening friendships and family ties.

Starting with the new school year, students in 17 more US states will face new cellphone rules, bringing the total to 35 out of 50 states. Among these states, some ban (禁止) phones throughout the whole school day, while others only ban them during class, allowing use between classes or at lunch.
This change has come remarkably quickly, as Florida became the first state in the country to pass such a law in 2023. The number of states adopting rules or laws to limit phone use is growing with rising public support. According to a Pew Research Center survey conducted in June, 74 percent of US adults said they would support banning middle and high school students from using cellphones during class, up from 68 percent last fall.
However, this support didn’t come out of nowhere. Writer Gail Cornwall noted in The Atlantic magazine that having a phone nearby reduces interaction with others because notifications (通知) make people want to check their phones. Teenagers find it even harder to resist this urge because their brains are still developing.
The urge (欲望) to check phones isn’t just about the brain; it’s also social. Cornwall explained that many teens feel they need to be online all the time to keep up with friends. Being slow to respond can hurt friendships, causing “digital stress”, which can lead to lack of focus and even depression.
For students, the rules have added new school-day routines. “Most of them did not want to turn in their phones” at first, a student at McNair High School in Atlanta said. Now, that resentment (怨恨) is starting to fade.
Teachers appreciate the ban. Surveys by Emory University showed that teachers had noticed better concentration and more positive interactions among students. However, some experts said it’s not yet clear whether the ban has long-term benefits.
Meanwhile, many parents are against the ban. The US National Parental Union said that parents’ main concern is keeping their children safe during school emergencies. They believe direct communication with their children is important because schools often fail to communicate effectively.
The debate continues, but school smartphone bans reflect growing concerns about youth mental health and school performance.

For professional tap dancer and educator Quynn Johnson, tap dance (踢踏舞) is a never-ending process.
“There are levels of tap dance that for me still have yet to be unlocked. I still have a lot to do to unlock those energies, emotions and exploration for myself. So anytime I get to put the shoes on, it’s an opportunity to unlock those things,” Johnson said in an interview with The Crimson.
Born and raised in Flint, Mich., the youngest of three girls, Johnson was put in tap dance by her parents to follow her sisters’ footsteps. While her sisters eventually moved away from tap dance, Johnson stuck with it.
As Johnson kept dancing throughout her early life, she came to love it deeply. She would dance everywhere. In her words, “My feet were always moving.” When it came to choosing tap dance as a career, she said, “I needed money. A friend of mine shared with me a studio that was looking for a tap teacher, so I started teaching many kids tap there, and I really just fell in love with it — and it became a career.”
Education is a major part of Johnson’s company, Sole Defined, which she co-founded with another performing artist. Sole Defined has two branches — one is focused on staging live shows, and the other goes around the world teaching students literacy (识字) and math skills through tap dance.
“We’re able to tap into students’ background knowledge about different things, which they may not learn by just sitting in a classroom and memorizing. So using elements of tap dance like beat and allowing them to physically embody the knowledge in movement just betters their understanding,” she said.
32. What does Johnson think of tap dance
A.It takes a great deal of energy.
B.It reduces her negative emotions.
C.It serves as a tradition of her family.
D.It is a lifelong process of self-exploration.
33. What led Johnson to choose tap dance as a career
A.Her talent in tap dance.
B.Her passion for teaching tap.
C.Pressures of everyday life.
D.Requirements from her parents.
34. What does the teaching of Sole Defined feature
A.Giving lessons in the open air.
B.Preparing students for live shows.
C.Training students’ communicating skills.
D.Connecting knowledge to body movements.
35. Which words can best describe Johnson
A.Energetic and elegant.
B.Creative and devoted.
C.Passionate and generous.
D.Independent and reliable.

As we sped away from Konglor Cave on our trusty motorbike, the sun was beating down like crazy in central Laos(老挝) at midday. We could still feel the coolness of the cave on our skin as we made our way back to Thakhek, where we had a flight booked for the next day. But little did we know that just about fifteen minutes after passing a tiny town on the dust y road, something unexpected was waiting for us.
All of a sudden, our motorbike stopped working as a result of a broken fuel line and we found that we were in the middle of a deserted road with no people in sight. As the minutes dragged on and on with no cars passing by, panic started to set in. But we knew despair wouldn't help us get out of this mess.
Gathering our courage, we all agreed to take turns to push the motorbike back towards the town we had passed earlier. Since we didn't have a map and were unsure about how far the town in our intended direction was, this seemed to be our best option. It was challenging to push in that heat, our clothes sticking to us and dust getting everywhere. Our feet were killing us too. As we continued pushing the motorbike under the sun, the weight of the motorbike seemed to increase with each step.
The dusty road stretched endlessly before us, disappearing into the horizon (地平线). We had no choice but to hope that the town was not too far away. We encouraged one another with words of support and occasional laughter to lighten the mood. However, as time ticked by, it became obvious that this journey would test not only our physical strength but also our mental endurance. Doubts began to creep into our minds—what if there were no towns nearby What if we ended up going in circles
Just when we were about to lose hope, an old dusty truck appeared on the horizon.

As we left the repair shop in town, the truck driver refused to accept the money I offered him.

My View on Kong Rong Sharing Pears
Kong Rong Sharing Pears is a traditional Chinese story. When Kong Rong was little, he chose small pears for himself and gave bigger ones to his elder and younger family members.
The story shows the virtues of modesty, respect and consideration for others. It teaches us to be polite and selfless.
In my opinion, this spirit is still valuable today. We should learn to respect elders and care about others in daily life.
六、读后续写范文
Just when we were about to lose hope, an old dusty truck appeared on the horizon. We waved our hands wildly to stop it. Luckily, the kind driver noticed us and pulled over. Learning our trouble, he kindly offered to take us and our broken motorbike to the nearest town for repair. Feeling extremely grateful, we got on the truck immediately. The driver chatted with us warmly all the way, easing our tiredness and anxiety. Soon, we arrived at a small repair shop in the town.
As we left the repair shop in town, the truck driver refused to accept the money I offered him. He smiled and said helping strangers was nothing worth rewarding. He added that everyone would offer a hand when others were in trouble. His kindness deeply touched us. We expressed our sincere thanks again and promised to pass on this warmth to others. This unforgettable experience taught me that kindness is the most beautiful language in the world.
