Jeremiah's Mistake
Jeremiah hurried into the kitchen and washed his hands. He had exactly one hour until his father got home. He wasn't used to starting dinner this early. On his nights to cook, Jeremiah generally got dinner ready in fifteen minutes. But Dad always praised Jeremiah's meals, no matter how simple they were. "Delicious!" he would say. But Jeremiah knew Dad liked more complicated (复杂的) dishes, because on Dad's nights to cook, he used a ton of ingredients. Dad was a natural cook. Not Jeremiah — at least, not until tonight.
It was Dad's birthday, and for once in his life, Jeremiah was cooking something complicated: spaghetti with homemade sauce. He'd eaten it a million times, so he knew most of the ingredients. "Tomatoes, onions, garlic, beef," he thought, looking through the fridge. They had everything except the beef. No problem — they'd eat vegetarian tonight.
Jeremiah cut up the vegetables with Dad's special knife and put them into the pot. Then he turned to Dad's spice (香料) collection. He picked a few familiar ones and put them in. The pleasing smell of fresh tomatoes amazed him. He tasted it just as Dad usually did. It was terrible! Way too spicy. Aha! A lime (酸橙) would cool things down. He added in as much lime juice as he could. One more taste. Ugh. It was awful! Now the sauce was sour and spicy.
He left the kitchen and went into his room. He could at least order pizza, so Dad wouldn't have to stay hungry on his own birthday. As he counted his money, he heard the front door open.
"Hi, Jeremiah!" Dad called.
"Coming."
Jeremiah returned to the kitchen, where he found Dad digging through the food cupboard. "I'm buying pizza," Jeremiah said. "It's not much of a birthday dinne..."
Dad turned, holding a bag of chips and a bowl of Jeremiah's spaghetti sauce. "We don't need pizza!" Dad smiled. "This spaghetti with salsa (萨尔萨辣酱)is a delicious meal!"
35. Why did Jeremiah decide to cook something complicated
A. Because it was his dad's birthday.
B. Because his dad told him to do so.
C. Because he arrived home early.
D. Because he was a natural cook.
36. Jeremiah thought the sauce he made was
A. neither sour nor spicy enough
B. different from what he had expected
C. simple but healthy
D. as delicious as he had imagined
37. What can we learn about Jeremiah's father
A. He takes his job seriously.
B. He is creative and strict.
C. He expects his son to be skillful.
D. He is loving and encouraging.

Speed reading is a necessary skill in the Internet age. We skim over articles, e-mails and WeChat to try to get key words and the meaning of the text. With so much information through our electronic device (设备), it would be impossible to get through everything if we read word by word, line by line. But a new trend calls on people to enjoy reading slowly.
A recent story from The Wall Street Journal reported on a book club in Wellington, New Zealand, where members meet in a cafe and turn off their smartphones. They sit in comfortable chairs and read in silence for an hour. Unlike traditional book clubs, the point of the slow reading club isn't to share ideas about a certain book, but to get away from electronic devices and read in a quiet and relaxing environment.
Slow readers, such as The Atlantic's Maura Kelly, say slow reading sharpens the mind, improves attention, lowers stress levels and deepens the ability to understand others. Some of these benefits have been backed up by science. For example, a study of 300 elderly people published by the journal Neurology last year showed that adults who take part in activities that use their brain, like reading, suffer less memory loss as they get older.
Yet technology has made us less careful puter and phone screens have changed our reading patterns from the top-to-bottom, left-to-right reading order we traditionally used, to a wild skimming and skipping pattern as we search for important words and information. Reading text online that has many links to other web pages also leads to weaker understanding than reading plain text. The Internet may have made us stupider, says British journalist Patrick Kingsley from the Guardian, only half joking. Because of the Internet, he says, we have become very good at collecting a large number of interesting news, but we are also gradually forgetting how to sit back, think and relate all these facts to each other.
Slowing reading means a return to an uninterrupted, straight pattern, in a quiet environment. Aim for 30 minutes a day, advises Kelly from The Atlantic. "You can squeeze in (挤出) that half hour pretty easily if only during your free moments — whenever you want to check your favorite site for something to pass the time — you pick up a meaningful work of literature," Kelly said.
38. According to the passage, slow reading
A. improves understanding among people
B. treats the memory loss of elderly people
C. changes our reading patterns
D. slows down the development of electronic device
39. Kingsley believes that the Internet has weaken people's ability to
A. get key words rapidly
B. share ideas about books
C. collect interesting news
D. think deeply about information
40. What's the best title for the passage
A. Benefit of Reading Clubs
B. Return of Slow Reading
C. Reading of the Internet Age
D. Influence of Speed Reading

Self-esteem is the way we feel about ourselves. It has a great influence on how we make decisions and socialize. Normally, people with low self-esteem easily think low about themselves, so it is very important to understand what causes low self-esteem and how we can get over it.
Because of trust, we sometimes accept the control from other people who tell us what to do. However, we need to understand it may have serious effects, especially when that person has negative behaviors, like being cruel, or overly criticizing others. Remember that you cannot change a person quickly, but you must change how you react to their words and behaviors towards you. Always remember that only you have control of your reaction.
Do not just focus on your past unwise choices or feel guilty (内疚的) about them. Everyone makes mistakes. But if you think more, every mistake you made in the past has caused something positive. Making mistakes will open many doors for improvement. If you're feeling especially guilty about a decision you made, write it down and write every possible positive result that happened to you. This will help you revere those decisions rather than feel upset about them.
Besides, it is not wrong to dream a big thing. However, there will be some harmful effects on your self-esteem if it is your only goal and you fail to achieve it. Most of the time we set unrealistic goals and not being able to achieve them makes us think that we are not good enough. Therefore, it is a good idea to set a huge goal but remember to set up small milestones that you can achieve along the way.
Last but not least, comparing yourself to other people is easy to become a bad habit. We think that the picture we see on social media is their whole story, not realizing that it is just their best look. Keep in mind that what you see is not always what it seems. Moreover, remember that they worked hard to achieve what you see from them, then learn from them to be a better you.
Hopefully, these tips help you develop your self-esteem. You will not be able to live a joyful life if you let your low self-esteem take over.
41. What should we do if others always tell us what to do
A. Control our own reaction.
B. Trust and take their advice.
C. Be cruel and criticize them.
D. Try to change them quickly.
42. The word "revere" in Paragraph 3 probably means"____"
A. make B. value C. regret D. forget
43. What can we learn from the passage
A. We'd better try our best to make fewer mistakes.
B. Small goals will lower our self-esteem and cause failure.
C. We shouldn't believe in the stories on social media blindly.
D. The problem of low self-esteem is more serious than before.
44. The writer wrote this passage to
A. introduce some methods to study self-esteem
B. guide readers to solve the low self-esteem problem
C. lead people to make right decisions by themselves
D. encourage people to face failures bravely in real life

Becoming a Minimalist
I have too many things. My bedroom is often very messy. I have shelves with dirty books I never read and CDs I don't listen to. My drawers are filled with clothes I never wear. I was getting upset that I never had any space in my bedroom. Then I read about minimalist. Minimalist suggests that you only keep the most necessary and important things and get rid of everything else. After reading about minimalism I felt encouraged to solve my problem.
I started clearing out a lot of the things which I didn't use. I collected bags of clothes to give to charity. I sold some of the CDs and books online. Although I knew that I would never need these things again, I still found it very difficult to get rid of them. My brain tried to stop me from letting them go. I said to myself "I might need that in the future!" or "Won't I be sad if I lose that " But the thing was, I knew I couldn't keep everything.
After getting lots of things out of my room, I actually became quite excited to see the tidy room with some fresh space. And an organized bedroom also makes me have a clear and organized mind! The main idea behind minimalism is to cut down what you own and really value the things you have. It's not easy to be minimalist. We are often told that it is better to have more things. Advertisements try to make us believe that we will only be happy by spending more money to buy more things. Of course, I'm not a perfect minimalist — I've only just started. I still own a lot of things which I don't really need, but I think this was a good start. In the future, I will be more mindful of what I buy. And I will continue to make an effort to get rid of what I don't need.
45. When did the writer feel encouraged to solve her problem
46. How did the writer get rid of some of the CDs and books
