STINSON BEACH CLEAN-UP PROJECT
Help us keep Stinson Beach clean this summer! Warmer weather and handfuls of holidays bring more people out to the beach which sometimes means more garbage too; join us once per month to clear litter and maintain the beauty there.
When: One Friday a month between May and September. 10: 00 am—1: 00 pm.
Where: Stinson Beach parking lot.
Supplies: We invite volunteers to bring their own reusable supplies! Limit waste by bringing your own bag or bucket and gloves if possible — but don’t worry if you don’t — we’ll have some supplies on site for you to use.

In the remote town of Yangla, located over 3,000 meters above sea level in the mountains of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, 32-year-old doctor Nasheng is devoted to providing healthcare to more than 5,400 villagers.
Nasheng graduated in Tibetan medicine from Qinghai University in Qinghai Province. Her passion for the field was inspired after witnessing the difficulties faced by her fellow villagers. “I saw how difficult it was for my family to access medical treatment in inland areas — long journeys, language barriers, and cultural differences made it even harder,” she said.
When she arrived at the Yangla Town health center in September 2021, she was struck by the isolation (隔绝) of the area. Her accommodation is a simple room inside the inpatient ward. Other than a barbecue restaurant, there are no other entertainment options in town.
Although Yangla Town has a small population, its villages are spread across more than 1,000 square kilometers, often requiring several hours of travel by car to reach each one.
This made Nasheng aware that even though the village had a health station, many residents still struggled to reach it due to the area’s vastness. “What if there were another station here ” she wondered. After submitting a proposal, and with support from the local government, a basic health station was established in June 2022. “Now the service station has moved into a new building, and a village doctor is seeing patients there,” Nasheng said. The Yangla Town health center also organizes mobile free clinics in different villages every month, supported by a committed team of over 20 staff members.
Looking ahead, she hopes to continue her studies. “I want to pursue a master’s degree and learn more about acupuncture (针灸) techniques,” she said. “But no matter what, I’ll always come back — this is my home.”

Inspired by butterfly wings, a team of German researchers have developed a new kind of robotic wings that can work using only magnetic fields (磁场). The new wings created by the Technical University of Darmstadt researchers need no batteries or electronics.
The researchers drew inspiration from the remarkable efficiency and endurance of monarch butterflies, known to have incredibly long migrations between Canada and Mexico. Every autumn, millions of Monarch butterflies start a 3,000-mile journey from their North American breeding grounds to the warmer climate of southwestern Mexico for the winter.
These new robotic wings achieve energy-efficient flight by combining movement with passive bending, which was rarely copied outside the natural world. The team, led by Professor Oliver Gutfleisch and Dr. Denys Makarov, used a combination of flexible plastic fixed with tiny magnetic particles (颗粒) to build the wings.
The team found that the magnetic particles, when exposed to external magnetic fields, caused the wings to bend in a manner similar to that of butterflies. Achieving the desired design proved challenging; however, after testing fewer than 12 different designs, the team could develop wings strikingly similar to those that evolved in butterflies.
Looking ahead, these new wings could have a wide range of applications. One could be environmental research in which winged robots monitor pollinator populations or measure air quality. They could also be helpful in disasters, with their small, energy-efficient design, enabling robots to navigate dangerous areas for search and rescue operations. The team also pointed out that the new design could also be readily adapted for medical sciences.
The principle of using magnetic particles in this way could also open doors for developing new kinds of artificial muscles or other innovative materials that can change shape on demand. While the robotic wings currently rely on external magnetic fields to change shape, the team is optimistic about integrating man-made magnetic field generators into future upgrades of the technology. “We plan to explore what changes to magnetic fields can enable more complex movements and control,” explained Muhammad Bilal Khan, another lead author.

Led by psychologists from the University of Vienna, Trinity College Dublin, and Humboldt University, the study highlights how artworks like The Starry Night and The Scream improve eudemonic well-being — linked to life meaning and personal growth. The effects were consistent across diverse formats, including paintings, sculptures, and digital displays.
These benefits were observed in a variety of locations — in museums and galleries as well as clinics and hospital settings and also through the medium of virtual reality. A wide range of art types including figurative and abstract paintings, photography, and sculpture were found to improve well-being.
“Art is often seen as a luxury,” notes lead author MacKenzie Trupp, at the University of Vienna, “but our findings position it as an accessible, low-cost well-being tool.”
Claire Howlin, assistant professor of Trinity College, added, “While the benefits of creating art are well-documented, the impacts of viewing art have been overlooked despite its daily accessibility.” The World Health Organization’s 2019 recommendation to pair art with clinical care aligns (使一致) with these findings, as art addresses core human needs for meaning and identity.
