It’s cute when your sleeping puppy does it. It’s not so cute when you are having a serious conversation with a friend or your boss and you just can’t stop. It’s the hiccups (打嗝). Hiccups appear as one of the most searched terms on the Internet. That may come as a surprise. Everyone gets them-why all the questions For all the medical and scientific advancements humanity has made over the years, there is still a lot we don’t know about hiccups.
To understand hiccups, you have to know about the diaphragm (膈), the major muscle that controls breathing, which sits just below the lungs and near the stomach. When you breathe in, the diaphragm contracts and your chest expands. Hiccups are sudden spasms (痉挛) of that muscle, and they send a message to your brain to close a flap in your throat again and again-hence the “hic” sound. The “up” comes from the release of the pressure when the flap opens up.
The answer to the question of what causes them is perhaps disappointing: We often don’t know. They can be caused by many everyday things including spicy food, alcohol, eating too fast, or eating a large meal.
Often when someone starts to hiccup, a debate begins among everyone nearby over which home method is the true cure. “They all are a little right,” said Dr Ali Seifi. Whether it’s holding your breath, drinking cups of water quickly and constantly, drinking upside down, or getting scared, Seifi said there is actually good science behind those old tales passed down through the generations. “The ones that involve breathing or drinking include long contractions of the diaphragm, and getting scared or surprised can affect the nerves that are associated with hiccups,” Seifi said. “They didn’t know what they were doing, but in fact they were targeting these muscles.”

Have you ever noticed that people sometimes seem more willing to help when times are hard A surprising new study suggests that this might be true. Researchers from the University of Birmingham have found that people are more likely to help others when they are in poorer environments.
The study, published in Nature Communications, included more than 500 participants and used an interesting way to test real-world generosity (慷慨). Participants were asked to watch a movie. While watching, they would occasionally be presented with opportunities to help an upsetting stranger. However, there was a catch: to help, they had to stop watching the movie and perform a physically effortful task. This was designed to mirror real-life situations where helping often requires actual effort, not just good intentions.
The researchers created two different environments for the participants. In the poor environment, participants repeatedly encountered low-quality choices that offered small rewards with low chances of success. In the rich environment, they were offered more appealing choices with higher rewards and greater certainty.
The results were clear and unexpected: people in the poor environment were significantly more likely to stop their movie-watching to help others compared to those in the rich environment.
Why The researchers explain that in a poor environment-where good opportunities are rare-helping others may feel like a good enough choice. But in a rich environment full of choices, people become picky. They weigh（权衡）the cost of helping against the high-quality opportunities they might miss out on.

Hello, everyone. Welcome to be our fresh blood of our volunteer program introduction. Today, I’d like to tell you something about our program. This program has been running for 25 years. This summer, we accepted 37 high school students aged 14 to 17. Among them, 23 were returning participants and 14 were first-time volunteers. Together, they donated nearly 5,500 hours of service throughout the Dorn VA Medical Center. Our program provides students with hands-on experience in various departments, including nursing, administration and surgery. We also offer valuable professional development such as first-aid training and communication skill-building workshops. Students also take part in team-building events. Many of our participants have expressed interest in pursuing careers as nurses, dentists, or even surgeons in the future. Over the past 25 years, more than 1,000 students have taken part in this program. One four-year participant named Madelyn Washington said, “Before, I was a little more shy, but thanks to the program, I’ve been able to be more personable.” Now, let’s watch a short video about some of our students’ experiences.
