Delia was a pianist and her husband Joe was an artist. They both loved art but the lessons from the best teachers were expensive. Soon they didn’t have any money. One day, Delia told Joe that she met a man. The man would give her 50 dollars an hour to teach his daughter to play the piano.
Joe hoped Delia could keep taking her piano lessons. But Delia said she would do so after making enough money. Joe also decided to stop his art lessons, draw pictures and sell them to make money.
A few days later, Joe came home happily with 200 dollars. He told Delia that a man from Vermont bought his picture and would buy more.
One day, Joe found a bandage (绷带) on Delia’s hand. He asked her what was wrong. Delia explained that she burned (烫伤) her hand when making coffee for her student Sally. Sally bought the bandage for her.
But Joe asked her about her real work. Delia couldn’t help crying, and told the truth: she didn’t find any piano students. So she worked as a waitress in a restaurant. She burned her hand with hot water and could not work anymore. She hoped they still had money from Joe’s buyer.
Then, Joe told her the truth too: no buyer from Vermont. He worked in a drugstore (药店). That day, a woman came to buy bandages for her workmate who burned her hand. After seeing the same bandage, Joe knew everything.

Many people believe in the “five-second rule”—if you pick up dropped food within five seconds, it’s safe to eat. But is this true
Experts don’t think so. Schaffner, a food science professor, explains that bacteria (细菌) can move to food right away. “Bacteria don’t have legs. They move with the liquid (液体). The more liquid in the food, the more easily it gets bacteria, ” Schaffner says. For example, if a piece of watermelon falls on the floor, it might collect bacteria quickly. Even if you pick it up quickly, it could still be dangerous to eat.
Many people think that food dropped on a carpeted (铺有地毯的) floor is very dirty.
However, another expert, Professor Hilton, found that carpeted floors pass on fewer bacteria than hard surfaces (表面) like wood. This is because the top of a carpet keeps food away from bacteria that lie closer to the ground. Still, he warns people to be careful. Food on the floor can never be completely safe. But what if your food is dropped on the kitchen counter instead of the floor Dr. Dowshen, advises not eating such food as well. Raw (生的) meat or other foods can leave bad bacteria called salmonella (沙门氏菌) on the top. Food from a dirty counter could make you sick.
In the end, you can never be too careful about what you put in your mouth. When you’re not sure, it’s probably better to just throw it away.
Many people believe dropped food is safe if they pick it up within five seconds, but experts say 74 . Bacteria can move to food quickly, especially (尤其是) 75 like watermelon. Surprisingly, food dropped on carpet might pick up fewer bacteria than on hard floors like wood, but food on the floor 76 . Food dropped on kitchen counters is also not safe. The advice is clear: when food touches the floor or a dirty counter, 77 . Better safe than sorry!

Wu Yize is a 22-year-old snooker (斯诺克) player from Lanzhou, Gansu. On May 5, 2026, he won the world snooker championship at the Crucible Theatre. He beat Shaun Murphy, a four-time world champion, with a score of 18-17 and finally became the top player in the world.
His dream started at the age of seven. His father found that he had a special talent for this sport. To support his dream, Wu’s family made big changes. They closed their antique (古董的) shop and moved to Dongguan. There, Wu studied in a famous snooker school to learn professional skills. Later, Wu went to Sheffield in the UK with his father. It is known as the home of snooker in the world.
Their life was really hard in the UK. For three years, they lived in a small flat without windows and shared one bed. His father did several hard jobs to make money for his training. At the same time, his mother stayed alone in Lanzhou to make money for about ten years. Wu often missed his family and hometown food, but he never stopped practicing.

She taught me new words and helped me with my homework. She always said, “Don’t give up. You can do it!” So I tried to read English every morning. With her help, I did better in English.
