Unit 4 Amazing Plants and Animals
(Narrative)
My Sunflower
Last spring, my grandma gave me some sunflower seeds. "Plant them and watch the magic happen," she said with a smile.
I planted the seeds in a pot outside my window. Every morning, I watered them carefully. After two weeks, tiny green sprouts appeared! I was so excited. The sprouts grew taller day by day. Their leaves opened up like little hands reaching for the sun.
One morning, I noticed something amazing. The sunflower heads were all facing east — towards the rising sun! I ran to tell Grandma. She explained, "Sunflowers are heliotropic. That means they turn to follow the sun across the sky."
I watched them every day after that. In the morning, they faced east. At noon, they looked up at the sky. In the evening, they turned west to watch the sunset. At night, they slowly turned back to the east, waiting for the next sunrise.
By summer, my sunflowers were taller than me! Their bright yellow petals looked like golden sunshine. I felt so proud because I grew them all by myself. Grandma was right — it was truly magic.
(Science Article)
Chimpanzees: Our Closest Relatives
Did you know that chimpanzees share about 98% of their DNA with humans That makes them our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom.
Chimpanzees are incredibly smart animals. They live in groups called communities and have their own unique "cultures." For example, some chimpanzees use sticks to catch termites. Others use rocks to crack open nuts. Different groups have different ways of doing things — just like human cultures!
These amazing animals are also very emotional. They hug each other when they meet after a long time. They also show sadness when a friend dies. Jane Goodall, the famous scientist, studied chimpanzees for over 60 years. She said, "Chimpanzees are more like humans than we ever imagined."
Today, chimpanzees are in great danger because of habitat loss. Fewer than 300,000 chimpanzees are left in the wild. Scientists are working hard to protect them and their homes. Every animal matters, and we can all help make a difference.
(Story Excerpt)
Charlotte's Web
Wilbur was a lonely pig on Mr Zuckerman's farm. He had no friends. He felt sad and bored every day.
One morning, Wilbur heard a small voice. "I can be your friend," said the voice. Wilbur looked up and saw a grey spider spinning a web in the corner of the barn. Her name was Charlotte. She was patient, kind and very wise.
Charlotte asked, "Would you like to be my friend " Wilbur's heart jumped with joy. "Yes! I would love that!" From that day on, they were best friends. Every day, Charlotte told Wilbur amazing stories about the world outside the barn. Wilbur felt happy and safe.
But soon Wilbur learned that Mr Zuckerman planned to eat him for Christmas dinner. Wilbur was terrified. "I don't want to die!" he cried.
"Don't worry," Charlotte said calmly. "I will save you." She thought hard and then said, "I will spin some words in my web. When people see the words, they will think you are a special pig."
And so, Charlotte began to spin her famous web. She wrote the words "SOME PIG" in silky letters. The next morning, the farmer saw the web. He was shocked. "This is a miracle!" he shouted. Wilbur was saved.

Plants are amazing living things. They may not move like animals, but they can "communicate" with each other in surprising ways!
Scientists have discovered that plants send chemical signals to warn other plants of danger. When an insect starts eating a plant's leaves, the plant releases chemicals into the air. Nearby plants "smell" these signals and begin producing their own chemicals to protect themselves from the insects.
Plants also communicate through their roots. A tree called the "Mother Tree" can send food and water to younger trees through underground networks of fungus. This network is like the internet for plants! The older trees help the younger ones survive.
Some plants even communicate with animals! Flowers use colours and smells to tell bees and butterflies, "Come and visit me!" The animals get food from the plants, and the plants get pollinated. It's a win-win relationship.
It turns out that plants are much smarter than we think. They talk, share, and help each other. The next time you see a tree or a flower, remember — it might just be sending a message to a friend!

My favourite animal is the elephant.
It lives in Africa and Asia and it is the largest land animal on Earth. It looks big and strong with a long trunk and large ears.
One amazing thing about it is its excellent memory. Elephants never forget their family members and can remember places they visited many years ago. They are also very smart and can feel sadness.
I really like elephants because they are gentle and wise. They take care of their babies and help each other in trouble. They are truly amazing creatures.
