Few people have achieved fame for coming in last place. That is why Michael Edwards, or “Eddie the Eagle”, became a rather unexpected hero. Unlike most athletes, Eddie did not come to the 1988 Calgary Olympic Winter Games for a medal. He came simply to compete. In doing so, he realized his dream.
At first, Eddie tried to make the British national ski team but failed. Then he chose the riskiest event, ski jumping. No British skier had ever competed in that sport, but having no competitors meant that Eddie had a better chance of qualifying for the 1988 Olympic Games. It also meant there was no support for him. Eddie had no coach, equipment, or financial support, but what he had was determination. Not afraid of what he lacked, Eddie set out to learn his chosen sport, training himself for nearly 2 years. And he managed to meet the qualification for Olympic ski jumping, and landed himself in the 1988 Olympic Games. Eddie was determined to compete, and while he came in last, he did manage to land his jumps, and he still holds the British record in that ing in last place actually made him the star of the Olympics and the true embodiment of the Olympic spirit.
Many of us may have experienced similar limitations during our own youth that prevented us from following our dreams. Eddie’s rejection from the British national ski team is a story that many of us can relate to. Rejection can be devastating, but we can struggle to find the courage to put ourselves back out there, or the creativity to find another way.

B.To join the national ski team.
C.To take part in the Olympics.
D.To develop his ski jumping skills.
25. Why did Eddie choose ski jumping as his event

B.It meant a better chance to win a medal.
C.He would get the support he needed in this event.
D.He would be more likely to be included in the Olympics.
26. What made Eddie the star of the Olympics
A.His caring little for fame.
B.His professional performance.
C.His breaking the British record.
D.His determination to follow his dream.

An international team led by scientists at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has recently developed the world’s first 3D artificial eye with capabilities that even outperform those of the human eyes, bringing vision to humanoid robots and new hope to patients with visual damage.
Scientists have spent decades trying to produce the exact copies of the structure and clarity of a biological eye, but vision provided by existing artificial eyes with external wires are still in poor resolution with 2D flat image sensors. The Electrochemical Eye (EC-Eye) developed at HKUST, however, may actually offer sharper vision than a human eye, with extra functions such as the ability to see things in darkness.
The key feature allowing such breakthroughs is a 3D artificial retina, made of nanowire light sensors which are like the photoreceptor in human retinas. The scientists connected the nanowire light sensors to some liquid-metal wires serving as nerves behind the human-made retina during the experiment, and successfully carried out the visual signal transmission to reflect what the eye sees onto the computer screen. In the future, those nanowire light sensors could be directly connected to the nerves of the visually damaged patients. Apart from that, the artificial retina can receive more light signals and potentially attain a higher image resolution than human retina.
With further adjustment, the EC-Eye can be a self-powered image sensor, so there is no need for external power source, which will be much more user-friendly as compared with the current technology. “The current artificial eyes are still of no match to the human eyes. A new technology is in urgent need, and it gives me a strong motivation to start this unconventional project. In the next step, we plan to further improve the performance of our device. Animal and clinical trials are now being planned. I think if everything is on track, perhaps in five years, the technology will become practical,” said Prof. Fan, whose team has spent nine years to complete the current study.
28. What’s the feature of the EC Eye
A.It uses 2D flat image sensors.
B.It provides a clearer vision than human eyes.
C.It performs better at night than in the day.
D.It is attached with external wires.
29. What’s the function of nanowire light sensors
A.To send computer signals.
B.To serve as nerves behind the retina.
C.To receive visual signals.
D.To connect nerves of patients to the wires.
30. What can we infer about the EC- Eye from Dr. Fan’s words
A.It is different from the previous devices.
B.It has been improved by the team.
C.It will be in clinical trials in five years.
D.It is of no match to human eyes.
31. What can be the best title for the text
A.EC-Eye Will Become Popular
B.Nanowire Light Sensors Help People See
C.Scientists Have Developed First Artificial 3D Eye
D.EC-Eye Helps to Cure People of Eye Diseases

Use food to ease your moods The time of meals may have an impact on moods, including levels of depression and anxiety, according to researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
To conduct the study, 19 participants (12 men and 7 women) were arranged to experience a Forced Process in a dark room for four 28-hour “days”. Participants were assigned to one of two meal timing groups: the Daytime and Nighttime Meal Control Group, which had meals according to a 28-hour cycle (resulting in eating both during the night and day, which is typical among night workers), and the Daytime Only Meal Group, which had meals on a 24-hour cycle (resulting in eating only during the day). The team then assessed depression and anxiety like mood levels every hour.
The result showed that meal timing significantly affected the participants’ mood levels. During the simulated night shift (day 4), those in the Daytime and Nighttime Meal Control Group had increased depression and anxiety like mood levels, compared to the baseline(day 1). In contrast, there were no changes in mood in the Daytime Only Meal Group. Participants with a greater degree of circadian disorder experienced more depression and anxiety like moods.
Researchers discovered that among individuals in the daytime and nighttime eating groups, anxiety and depression rose by 16% and 26% individually. A famous author Sarah Chellappa, who completed work on this project, said, “Meal timing is emerging as an important aspect of nutrition that may influence physical health, but the causal role of the timing of food intake in affecting mental health remains to be tested. Future studies are required to establish if changes in meal timing can lead individuals to experience anxiety-related disorders.”
The findings open the door for studying a behavioral strategy that might benefit individuals suffering from mental health disorders, such as shift workers. The study also adds to a growing body of evidence finding that strategies that improve sleep and circadian patterns may help promote mental health.
32. How is the study carried out according to the text
A.By presenting cause and effect.
B.By examining the participants’ eating habits.
C.By recording the eating time in various groups.
D.By comparing data from two different groups.
33. Which of the following will the researchers probably agree with
A.Daytime eating might benefit mental health.
B.It’s unavoidable for people to eat at the wrong time.
C.Nighttime meal is harmful and should be prohibited.
D.It’s necessary to keep track of our mood levels each day.
34. What does the follow-up test aim to find out according to Sarah Chellappa
A.How food intake affects human’s moods.
B.Whether changes in meal timing cause emotional problems.
C.Whether food nutrition is related to mental health.
D.Why shift workers suffer from mental health disorders.
35. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A.Meal Timing Reduces Pressure
B.Meal Timing May Affect Moods
C.Mood Disorders Result in Anxiety
D.Good Strategies Benefit Our Health

My father works as a taxi driver. Every single day, he drives along the busy urban streets, picking up and dropping off various passengers. The job is tiring and barely well-paid, yet he never utters a single complaint. Instead, he always returns home with a weary smile and small jokes to brighten up the whole family. “A passenger tipped me with a half-eaten apple today!” he would joke, bringing laughter to my mother and me.
Back in fifth grade, I handmade a sunflower keychain for him. It looked rough with faded paint. Nevertheless, Father cherished it deeply. He fastened it to his waist belt and took it wherever he went. As years rolled by, the keychain grew worn and nearly lost all its color, yet it still hung on his belt, swaying gently with every step he took.
Currently a high schooler, I am constantly buried in piles of homework and exams. Last week, I suffered a terrible failure in my math exam, leaving me feeling extremely defeated. Upon arriving home, I threw my schoolbag aside and sank into silence. Father instantly spotted my low spirits and asked softly what had happened. Refusing to reply, I felt annoyed at his repeated comfort offers. The accumulated frustration and embarrassment finally exploded. “Leave me alone!” I shouted rudely at him.
My harsh words hung awkwardly in the room. Father froze on the spot, his smile fading away completely. For a brief moment, he stared at me in shock and hurt, confused by my sudden outburst. Without any explanation, he turned around and walked slowly to his bedroom. The soft click of the closing door stung my heart far more fiercely than a loud slam.
That night, I tossed and turned in bed, consumed by great guilt. I quietly stepped out of my room and walked to the living room. There lay his belt on the sofa, with the faded sunflower keychain resting on it, silently reminding me of my foolishness.
Paragraph 1 I was shocked at my own rudeness.

Paragraph 2 I knocked at the door and it opened.

I was shocked at my own rudeness. Staring at the old sunflower keychain, I thought of how Dad treasured my little gift and cared for me every day, while I lost my temper over a bad exam. My eyes filled with tears. I picked up the keychain and decided to apologize to him sincerely.
I knocked at the door and it opened. Dad looked tired but didn’t blame me. I handed him the keychain and said sorry repeatedly. He patted my shoulder gently, saying he understood my pressure. We talked peacefully that night, and I promised to control my temper and share my troubles with him later.
