Splashy Fen Music Festival first started in 1990. It has grown into one of South Africa’s most popular music festivals. The festival now lasts four days and is held every year. The Chinese Spring Festival is regarded as the most significant festival of the year among the Chinese. It lasts for 15 days but Chinese people also consider the days of preparation beforehand as an important part of the Spring Festival.
There are a number of things people usually do before the Chinese Spring Festival. One of these is cleaning the house for the Chinese New Year. Dust makes people think of old or outdated things. Therefore, sweeping dust out of the house is a way of saying goodbye to old things and welcoming new things. Another important custom for families is to decorate their doors with red couplets. The phrases on the couplets express hopes for a prosperous new year. In the southern part of China, people will buy fresh flowers or orange trees to decorate their homes.
The most important custom of the Chinese Spring Festival is the big family dinner on the eve of the Chinese New Year. This is usually a big reunion of grandparents, parents, and children. It reflects how important family is to Chinese people around the world. That is why millions of Chinese people travel long distances to get home before the eve of the Chinese New Year. Also, families typically eat certain types of lucky food at the family reunion dinner. Eating fish, for example, is supposed to bring more wealth and prosperity than one needs, as the pronunciation of “fish” in Chinese (yu) is also used for “surplus”.
When the New Year comes, there are many interesting festival activities. Adults give children “lucky money” in red envelopes. People greet family and friends with “Xinnian Hao” or “GongxiFacai” whenever they may meet. Another part of this custom of sharing good wishes is to pay visits to relatives and bring them monly exchanged gifts include food such as fruit, sticky rice cakes, and homemade desserts.
In addition, friends and family go out to enjoy loud and colourful fireworks, spend time at temple fairs, and watch exciting dragon and lion dances.
The Chinese Spring Festival symbolises a farewell to the old year and a warm welcome to the brand new year. On April 19th, 2026, about 12,000 runners took part in a half marathon in Beijing, China. On a separate track, beside the human runners, over 300 human-like robots faced the same challenge.
A half marathon is a 21-kilometer running race. In March of this year, Olympic gold medalist Jacob Kiplimo set the world record for the half marathon. Last year, this event was held for the first time in E-Town, a technology center in Beijing. The fastest robot finished in 2 hours, 40 minutes, and 42 seconds — far slower than the human runners. In this year’s race, a robot called Lightning, which was created by Honor, a Chinese company best known for its phones, finished the half marathon in just 50 minutes, 26 seconds. That not only won the robot race, but beat Kiplimo’s world record by almost seven minutes.
Humans and robots ran on separate tracks to avoid crashes. But the robots still had the challenge of traversing the course and not crashing into the other 300 robots running the race. There were two main groups of robots — those that were controlled remotely (远程) by humans, and autonomous robots that use their own Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems to guide themselves along the course. These robots had to be aware of the road ahead and the activity around them.
During the race, some fell, and others ran off the course. Many had to stop because of problems. Even the winning robot fell down at one point. But it was able to get back up and finish the race. In all, 47 robots finished. Lightning robots came in first, second, and third in the race.
The race was meant as a display for China’s efforts in robotics. That’s an area that many people think will be extremely important in the future. China already has more robots doing actual work than all other countries put together. Given the huge improvements that happened in just one year, it’s hard to know what robots might be able to do in the future.

Recently, NASA’s Artemis Ⅱ mission, a historic 10-day journey — a journey of 1,118,500 kilometers, came to an exciting end as the Orion spacecraft splashed down (溅落) safely in the Pacific Ocean.
It was NASA’s first mission to the moon with astronauts since the Apollo program in the 1970s. The mission has set a new record for the farthest distance from Earth ever traveled by humans. As the Orion spacecraft returned to Earth, it faced extreme heat, entering the atmosphere at speeds of about 38,600 kilometers per hour. About 6.7 kilometers above the ocean, the parachutes (降落伞) opened up to slow the spacecraft down before it splashed down in the Pacific Ocean.
The four astronauts, Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen, have returned to Earth safely. The Artemis Ⅱ mission has a large collection of “firsts”. The astronauts included the first woman (Koch), the first person of color (Glover), and the first non-American (Hansen, a Canadian) to go on a lunar mission.
The astronauts were the first people to observe the entire side of the moon that faces away from Earth.
