Do you like Polar bears They are having a hard time now. What is happening to them The passage may help you understand them better.
What do you know about polar bears (北极熊)
Newborn polar bears are very small — only 30 to 35 cm long. Their weight is just a little more than 0.5 kg. They cannot see and they have no teeth. An adult polar bear is usually 1.8 — 3 meters long. Its paws (手掌) can be as big as dinner plates. The large paws work like snowshoes. They help the bear walk on ice and deep snow.

When they eat a lot, they store fat as heavy as 50% of their body weight. The fat keeps them warm.
Why are their numbers dropping
Today, there are only about 22,000 polar bears in the wild. Scientists recorded 120 polar bear deaths(死亡) between 2015 and 2025. Here are the main causes.
How we can help protect them — and ourselves
Laws are made to stop people from hurting polar bears. They ask people to stay at least 300 meters away from bears. If bears get too close, don’t run away. It’s dangerous. You can use loud noises and lights to make bears leave without hurting them. Scientists are studying bears to help them live.

Have you ever heard that walking backward (向后) can help you remember better It sounds strange, but scientists found it is true.
To check this idea, they asked 114 people to watch a video. After that, scientists put them into three groups. The first group walked forward for 10 meters. The second group walked backward for 10 meters. The third group just stood and did nothing. Then, all of them answered 20 questions about what they saw in the video. The scientists then looked at the results.
The results were surprising. The backward-walking group got about 2 more correct answers than the other two groups. Why does this happen When you walk backward, you change your usual ways of seeing things. It can help you recall the past more easily.
The research shows that walking backward can help people bring back their past memories. Scientists believe that walking backward may really help with old people’s memory problems. About 10% of people over 65 suffer from memory problems. It is a difficult medical problem. Scientists want to help those old people. In the future, they may find out the best speed, the best daily walking time, and brain (大脑) exercises for walking backward. Walking backward might one day become a better way to help old people with memory problems.

“I bet (打赌) twenty thousand pounds that I can travel around the world in eighty days.” The book Around the World in Eighty Days begins with this brave bet. It is a famous book by the French writer Jules Verne. He wrote it in 1873.
The story is about Phileas Fogg, a rich and calm Englishman, and his French servant (仆人) Passepartout. One day, Fogg makes a bet with his friends. If he can go around the world and come back to London in eighty days, he will get 20 thousand pounds. If he can’t make it, he will lose almost all his money.
During their journey, they face many problems. A detective (侦探) follows them. A storm stops their ship. But they can always find a way out. They travel by train, ship, and even on an elephant! In India, they save a princess named Aouda. When they arrive in London, Fogg thinks he is five minutes late. He feels very sad. But Passepartout finds out they travel east around the world, so they get one more day!
I really like this book. It is full of fun and adventure. It teaches us to stay calm and never give up and shows us that love and friendship in the journey are more important than money.
